Finding My Tribe * I am writing to you from Melbourne
Australia, where I've just come back to my hotel from the Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony.
Earlier today I interviewed Merelyn Pearce, who just happened to win the National Quilt Award tonight, so I am excited to have a video of such an incredibly talented quilter! (coming soon to the eQuilter
video page)
It was a pleasant surprise to run into several quilters I know here -
Jane Sassaman,
Jinny Beyer, Vikki Pignatelli and Noriko Endo are attending the show.
I have met so many of our eQuilter customers here, and
several Australian designers whose products we carry.
The show is held in a gorgeous historic building - the Royal Exhibition Center which is purported to be the only major 19th Century Palace of Industry exhibition building in the world to survive substantially intact.
The scale of this building reminded us of a European cathedral, and it has lovely Victorian murals, stencils and fixtures inside.
At the award ceremony and dinner tonight, I was surprised to see how dressed up all the ladies were; wearing lovely dresses and high heels.
One thing we discussed was how differently the Australian quilters dress during the day at the show, compared to the Houston show.
(The Aussie quilters dress more for style, and the US quilters dress more for comfort.)
I also heard a comment from a teacher about the difference between teaching in the US vs.
Australia: the American quilters like to be entertained more, while the Aussie quilters are more serious and want to get lots of information and techniques out of a class.
Interesting!
One thing's for certain: Australian quilters are just as passionate about beautiful fabrics, as we are in the US.
That's a language that everyone understands here, and quilters love giving a show and tell at the end of the day here just like they do in quilt shows around the world.
"Look what I found!" is an oft-heard comment in the late afternoon.
Last night I had a dinner with a large group of Australian SAQA members, and today had a group lunch with friends of eQuilter.
Thanks to Lisa and Chris for organizing these gatherings!
I am, of course, taking plenty of photos.
Watch out for these images on
my photo page in the next week or two.
Monday I'll be traveling up the Great Ocean Road with Pam Holland, and I'll be sharing my adventure with you!
Where else, but in the quilting world, can one travel to the extreme opposite end of the planet, and find instant friends from the same tribe - the Quilting Tribe of Fabriholics!
