|Colors of Australia
We have several videos in the works from my trip to Australia, and
this week we have the first two:
My interview with curator Brenda Gael Smith about "
Beneath the Southern Sky"
another interview with artist Lisa Walton about the Oceania chapter of
SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Association) and her entry in the Southern Sky exhibit.
You will see right away that the Australians have a brilliant sense of color, and many US quilters at the show commented to me how the Australian quilters' color sense is very different from anything they've seen around the world.
continue to post photos from the show (and my roadtrip) on
my photo page, I hope you will also get a sense of this distinctive Australian color aesthetic.
I really find it SO interesting to visit quilt shows around the world, and see how each country and/or culture expresses itself so distinctively through their color and design choices.
Tokyo Quilt Festival exhibit is a great example of this unique cultural expression, as you may see in my photos of the Jan 2012 show.
In one month I will be off to the
Irish Quilt Festival to check out the Irish expression of color and design! My bus is full, so I know I am going to have a wonderful experience with a group of quilters as we discover Ireland together, but I really hope to meet many more of you at the festival!
Pam Holland and I teamed up to bring you video and photo coverage from the Australasian Quilt Conference, with Bonnie McCaffery helping us out with the editing.
Take a look at
our first couple Australia videos and you'll see this fearless trio at work together!
