The Healing Power of Handmade * We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with loved ones.
Here in Boulder we've had unseasonably warm days and lovely blue skies.
Saturday I posted an inspiring story on my Facebook page about a woman who has
taught male inmates to knit - creating a catalyst for healing.
This reminded me of many stories I've read about quilting programs that have been established for prisons,
such as this one in the UK.
One of the reasons I initially got involved with quilting, (after leaving the fashion industry) was because I was drawn to its healing qualities.
I was struggling with a loss, and when I found a weekly quilting group, I found that the process of making a quilt helped to heal my heart.
Then, as an added benefit, all that healing love was doubled when I gave it to someone else who needed a quilty hug!
The quilts are starting to arrive at the
Timeless Treasures warehouse in New Jersey, and about 250 quilts were distributed this week.
We have received so many emails from individuals and guilds, that we believe
our goal of distributing 5000 quilts to Hurricane Sandy survivors is a very realistic one.
One woman is delivering 46 quilts that she made all by herself! (Thank you Pat!) Another pledged to send one quilt per month as long as we run the program.
If you wish to participate in this effort, please
read the guidelines carefully, and be sure to
include this project link if you share the project with friends or online lists. http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/quiltrelief.html
To me, every handmade stitch, every carefully constructed block, every beautifully-turned binding is a prayer.
Those who give so selflessly often are inspired by a loss they have suffered in the past, and a desire to comfort someone who is going through a similar trauma now.
Often those who have suffered and lost the most, are the most generous and compassionate after they recover.
If you are in the Boulder area, on
Thursday night Nov 29 eQuilter is a co-sponsor of a fundraiser concert for Hurricane Sandy relief.
Perhaps I will see you there?
I thought you'd like to know that we have all
ELEVEN of our videos posted from the Houston Quilt Show!
