eQuilter *Hurricane Sandy - 5000 Quilts* Jan 10, 2013 Update: Yes we are still receiving and distributing quilts for Hurricane Sandy victims! Tens of thousands of east coast residents were disastrously affected by the storm - losing home, possessions, and in some cases their livelihood/jobs as a result. They need these quilts to keep warm this winter. If you have thought about donating a quilt to someone in need, please read the guidelines below carefully, and then ship asap to the Timeless Treasures warehouse in New Jersey. If you wish to refer us to an established organization doing relief work in an affected area, to receive a group of comfort quilts that can be distributed to those in need, feel free to contact eQuilter customer service (Dana) at service@eQuilter.com and Luana at luana@eQuilter.com We will post all of the photos of the quilts, the recipients, and the devastated areas, as we receive them. If YOU have photos to share, please email to eQuilter.com at luana@eQuilter.com Hurricane Sandy Photo page: eQuilter *5000 QUILTS for HURRICANE SANDY* http://www.flickr.com/photos/luanarubin/sets/72157632121717400/ PLEASE NOTE: Please do NOT ship quilts to eQuilter! Drop off at eQuilter IN PERSON, or ship directly to TIMELESS TREASURES warehouse: Timeless Treasures Fabrics 161 East 11th Avenue Roselle, NJ 07203 You can also drop off quilts at the Timeless Treasures warehouse during business hours: Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. All quilts must be NEW or Like-New, CLEAN, with NO ANIMAL HAIR and ODOR-FREE. Do NOT drop off unfinished quilts!! - we cannot finish them and they will be donated locally. Do NOT ship unfinished quilts to TIMELESS TREASURES. THANK YOU to all of you who are sending clean, beautiful, healing, warm quilts for Hurricane Sandy victims on the East Coast! Your generous gifts of love will be in the hands of those who have lost everything, as soon as possible. If you are sharing this project with others (especially online groups) please SHARE THIS LINK so everyone has all the guidelines - they are there for a very good reason. *********** We are very fortunate to have Timeless Treasures Fabrics open up their warehouse to receive and process packages! Many thanks to owners Ellen and Dave Brown, for partnering with us on this massive relief effort. With our goal of 5000 quilts for Sandy victims, this is going to be a HUGE effort, and we ask all of you generous quilters to PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE GUIDELINES and watch for our updates. After carefully reading through all of our guidelines, if you STILL have a question, please do NOT contact Timeless Treasures. All queries should go directly to eQuilter Customer Service at: service@eQuilter.com QUILT SIZE: I'd like to suggest that you make bed-sized quilts for families who have lost everything. The smaller sizes below would be a minimum size for that size bed - the larger size is obviously a more generous sized quilt. Small Twin - 65" x 85" Larger Twin - 75" x 98" Small Double/Full - 80" x 88" Large Double/Full - 83 x 106" Small Queen - 86" x 93" Large Queen - 102" x 112" We will of course accept crib, lap or king size quilts, but we suggest you aim for a twin, full or queen size if possible. You can find FREE PATTERNS for this project at: eQuilter Pattern Page - eQuilter FREE PATTERNS for HURRICANE SANDY* http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_patmain.html Timeless Treasures Pattern page - Timeless Treasures FREE PATTERNS for HURRICANE SANDY* http://www.ttfabrics.net/patterns/ IMPORTANT: If you wish a confirmation of delivery, then you will need to ship with a tracking number. For security, do not mark the box with the word "quilts". If you wish to drop off at Timeless Treasures NYC offices in person, please do so during normal business hours: Mon thru Fri, 9 to 5: Timeless Treasures Fabrics 4th Floor 483 Broadway New York, NY 10013 This project will go on for several months, but we have not set a deadline yet. IMPORTANT: Please read all of this information carefully and if your question is not answered, you can contact eQuilter Customer Service at service@equilter.com FAQs: How can I stay up to date on this project? To receive the latest *Hurricane Sandy Quilts* updates in your Inbox, you can subscribe to our eQuilter newsletter at: https://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/ur_registerform.html If you missed the newsletters, you can still read them online. Weekend newsletters are posted at: http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/secure.html and midweek Creative Nudge is posted on my blog: http://www.luanarubin.typepad.com/ What kind of fabrics should I use? Think about making something that will bring beauty and peace to the recipient, who may have lost everything they owned. Consider backing it with flannel if you have it on hand, for warmth. Don't be afraid to piece together the batting from your batting scraps (butt the ends together and join with a zigzag stitch) or even piece together the backing. Should I label my quilt? How will they know who made it? Be sure to put your name, address, and a message of Hope on a label, on the backside of the quilt. Even if you don't hear back from the recipient, they will surely read your message of caring. Use a permanent waterproof pen like a Pigma or Sharpie, write on a light colored fabric, use a double-sided fusible and hand-tack for security. Can I send only a quilt top? Do you have any longarm quilters who might be able to help finish a quilt if I give a quilt top? We appreciate the idea, but we can only accept finished quilts. Due to the great need, we will accept tied quilts, but we encourage you to do a minimum of basic quilting if possible. (stitch in the ditch) We do expect that there will be longarmers who would like to team up with those making quilt tops, so we encourage you to put out this query to your local quilt guild, or even to an online quilt community. Our plate is full with the organization, so we won't be able to help match you up with a longarmer at this time. Can I send other items like baby clothes or diapers? What about Fleece blankets? Crocheted blankets? Pillowcases? Stuffed Animals? At this time we'd like to focus on the most urgently needed supplies. Please send either quilts or donate money to Mission of Love to help pay for disaster relief supplies or other basic needs. If you wish to donate a pillowcase, that can be the cover for the quilt. Will eQuilter donate fabric to a guild or group making quilts for Hurricane Sandy survivors? If you are a local, *established* Colorado guild and have a project to make and donate quilts to this effort, contact us about picking up a box of scrap fabrics. Please do not request us to ship scraps, or give to informal quilt groups. We may also have batting and backing end pieces that can be joined together. Will eQuilter help to promote other Hurricane Sandy quilt projects? Honestly, our plate is totally full promoting and organizing our project. We encourage you to get involved in other projects with local *trusted* entities, but because there are so many other groups doing similar projects, we will stick to promoting this project. We don't want to confuse or disappoint anyone! Can you post my pattern design for others making quilts? We appreciate your generosity, but we need to stay focused on the project details on these pages. Our quilter friends don't seem to have any lack of ideas for comfort quilts! Is it OK to use your logo or image "Hurricane Sandy Quilts" with the link applied to it on blogs and websites? Yes it is ok to post the project logo and LINK on blogs and websites. We encourage you to pass the word to others, but make sure they go to this information page so they can follow our guidelines and help this huge project to be efficient and successful! I live outside the US. Can I still participate? For those of you living outside the US, yes you can ship directly to Timeless Treasures, or you can drop off in person to Timeless Treasures in New York City, or to eQuilter in Boulder, Colorado. IMPORTANT: Please read all of this information carefully and if your question is not answered, you can contact eQuilter Customer Service at service@equilter.com In case you are new to eQuilter, in addition to raising over $1 million for charity over the years, http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/Charity.html we have coordinated many thousands of comfort quilts donated and delivered over the years for 9/11, Katrina, Haiti and Japan tsunami survivors. http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/quiltsforjapan.html Feel free to share this link for our project, with any individual or guild who you think might be interested in participating. The bottom line is - yes you can start planning and making the quilts you'd like to donate to Hurricane Sandy victims. Our humble and sincere thanks to those of you who have helped in the past, and those of you who will help with this effort. It has been my experience with this type of disaster, that bed-sized quilts are what is most needed. We will accept lap-sized quilts and crib quilts, but we really encourage you to send at least twin or full sized quilts for those who have lost everything. We want to keep these people WARM for the winter, so if you can send it soon that is best, but we will continue this project for many months. We will not be accepting afghans, pillowcases, or other non-quilt items. We want to stay focused on our goal of collecting and distributing 5000 quilts. See our page for last year's quilt drive for Japan, if you'd like to get a preview of how this project will unfold. - Copy and paste this link: http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/quiltsforjapan.html Thank you!!! - Luana |
