A New Day

By now we hope you have read a press release detailing the sale of eQuilter to the new owners:
Collin and Christina Stewart.

Today Paul and I went to visit eQuilter in its new location, which is about 15 minutes NE of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. It was great to see our staff running the business with the new owners in this new space. Such a huge relief to us to know that this couple, and our staff, will steward the business into a new chapter.

But today I am sharing some more big news.

As you know, Paul and I are ‘retiring’ so I can return to a full time art practice. Yesterday my studio was loaded up and shipped out. Many of you have asked where my new creative space will be. Now I can tell you!

We are moving to the Puget Sound area in Washington State. After many years of deliberation, and the urging of my dear friend Caryl Bryer Fallert, we are moving to a small town of 3000 people on the East side of the Olympic Peninsula. Port Ludlow is about 90 minutes from SeaTac Airport. We can see Whidbey Island from our new home. I have a beautiful new studio space and we are so excited to make this change. Our middle son Sam will be moving with us…along with the 3 cats and 2 dogs.

Caryl lives about 25 minutes north of us in Port Townsend, and also McKenna Ryan lives and works in PT. There is a thriving art quilt community there and I have already connected with the SAQA Wash chapter. In fact I have a quilt traveling in an exhibit there now.

We take possession of the new house July 24, which means I cannot go to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. However I will have 4 quilts there! The Soul Stories gallery will be right next to the SAQA gallery, with my wolf pack “Invisible Borders” piece. I have entered 2 pieces in the general show. And I just found out that my butterfly quilt (on the cover of the catalog) will be traveling there in the SAQA Camouflage exhibit. So although I will not be there in the flesh, I’ll be well represented by my work. *smile*

If you wish to follow my story in my new studio and new community, you can subscribe to my artist website. In the meantime we ask you to support the new owners, and let them know if there are products you want them to carry. They are so enthusiastic about the quilting world and they want to be of service to the community, as Paul and I have done for 27 years.

love always,
Luana and Paul Rubin

Perched among the branches and peeking through the leaves, the Tree Top Kitties quilt is a playful, whimsical design that’s as fun to make as it is to look at. Cats and color come together in a pattern that’s sure to bring a smile to any cat lover’s face.

This design finishes at a generous 59.5″ x 45.5″ — a perfect throw-size quilt for a couch, a reading nook, or a gift for your favorite feline fan.

We’re putting the finishing touches on our move, and we’re grateful for your patience and encouragement throughout the transition. For the Love of ART

2 weeks ago we sent out a press release detailing the sale of eQuilter to the new owners:
Collin and Christina Stewart.

We encourage you to take a moment to read about these 2 wonderful people, and support them as they take the reins of our beloved company!

For the last few days they have been moving eQuilter to its new location, which is 15 minutes NE of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. Quite a convenient spot for local customers who want to pick up an order and spend an afternoon at the museum!

To all of you who have sent lovely emails and Facebook messages – thank you so much! We love you too! Many of you have been customers for so long, you remember following my trip to China in April 2023 to adopt Sophie. She turns 24 today, so we have all traveled together on this journey…our kids…your mothers and children….and now Christina and Collin take over the helm and their 2 young children may grow up in our wonderful industry as well. It has been such a blessing for our 3 kids who are now adults.

I feature this Steampunk Van Gogh panel because it is connected to the start of my own story – my deep love of art, color and design. When I was 15, I went to Germany as a summer exchange student. On the way there, we stopped in Amsterdam for 2 days. I visited the Rijksmuseum, which blew me away. (I saw Rembrandt’s Night Watch a few weeks before it was slashed.)

At the end of the day someone mentioned that the Van Gogh museum was nearby. I RAN as fast as I could to try to get through the doors before it closed…tears running down my face. As I raced through the galleries, a guard told me the museum closed in 20 minutes, and to head to the exit. I wept and begged him to quickly take me past the most famous paintings. You see, I had read “Lust for Life” (the Van Gogh biography by Irving Stone) until the tattered cover fell off.

Some of you know that I was finally able to return to Amsterdam 3 years ago, to see the Vermeer exhibit in the Rijksmuseum, but also to spend a whole day in the Van Gogh museum. In years past I visited several Van Gogh sites in Arles France, and more recently Neunen Netherlands where he lived as a young man. (Thanks Hilde) I’ve enjoyed the film “Lust for Life” with Kirk Douglas, and “Vincent and the Doctor” on Doctor Who. (made me cry) And don’t forget “Starry Starry Night” sung by Don McLean.

And why have I been so obsessed by Van Gogh since I was a child? His colors, his vision, his free brushstrokes, his tender heart…all spoke to me. Indeed he was one of my first teachers about ART….which eventually led us to open eQuilter so we could carry specialty products that were essentially ‘Art on Fabric’.

I hope you have enjoyed going down that rabbit hole with me, because I know that you are also an artist at heart…and eQuilter has always aimed to inspire and support YOU.

love always,
Luana and Paul Rubin

Illuminated Tree of Life

Some quilt patterns stop you in your tracks, and the Illuminated Tree of Life is one of them. The graceful branches, glowing colors, and symbolic design come together to create a quilt that feels both inspiring and deeply personal. I love Yggdrasil. It’s the kind of project you’ll enjoy every step of the way—and one you’ll be proud to display long after the final stitch is sewn.

To make this 56.5″ x 67.5″ quilt design, start with the Stained Glass Tree of Life panel.

A Fond Farewell, and Welcome

Last week we sent out a press release detailing the sale of eQuilter to the new owners:
Collin and Christina Stewart.

They are highly competent, very smart, and most importantly….good human beings.

Since then we have received so many messages of love and appreciation, and my response is…..thank you!

Having worked with the Stewarts over the last week here in the eQuilter offices, I can say that we are gratified to have found this husband and wife team who are so enthused and dedicated to keeping the eQuilter service running strong into the future. All of our employees were offered a job to continue with the company, which means there will be a consistency of service, and our staff members are gearing up for this big change!

You are part of that story, and I just want to take this last opportunity to say….please support this new chapter of the company, and please know that Paul and I will be available to guide the enterprise through this transition so all of you who rely on eQuilter, will see a relatively seamless progression into bigger things!

I am sharing this quilt “Polar Bear Eclipsed” which traveled in the Endangered Species exhibit for 5 years. I put this image on the back of my business cards for a few years, and many of you have told me you still have kept this card. Several of my quilts and my activist quilt collection have been acquired by the International Quilt Museum, including this artwork. (the first of my bear quilts….from the first of my six trips to Churchill to photograph the polar bears)

I am so grateful to know that this quilt collection will be stewarded by IQM for the public in the years to come.

To follow my return to full time art practice, and my eventual move to a new artist and design studio, please subscribe to my artist website.

Paul and I send all of you our love and appreciation for your support over these 27 years, and your continued support of the company we built out of our passion for art, color, and FABRIC.

A New Chapter Begins…

This week, my partner and I officially became the new owners of eQuilter.

We are honored to step into a company that has meant so much to so many quilters over the years. Like many of you, we’ve long admired the creativity, generosity, and sense of community that have made eQuilter special.

As we begin this new chapter, our goal is simple: to honor the legacy that Luana, Paul and the team built while continuing to provide the beautiful fabrics, inspiration, and service you’ve come to expect. We’re grateful that the talented eQuilter team remains in place, and we’re excited to learn from both them and this incredible quilting community.

Over the past few days, we’ve been reminded that quilting is about much more than fabric. Every quilt tells a story, celebrates a milestone, or brings comfort to someone who needs it. We’re humbled to become part of those stories.

As you browse this week’s fabrics, we’re feeling much the same way we imagine many quilters feel when starting a new project: excited, inspired, and looking forward to what comes next.

Thank you for welcoming us into the eQuilter family. We look forward to getting to know you.
