May 18 – Endangered Species Day

This time of year the avid birdwatchers are out with their binoculars and walking sticks here in Colorado. We are seeing migrating birds expanding beyond their traditional ranges, due to changes in habitat and food sources. We know that many of you are concerned about endangered species affected by climate change, including pollinators. (birds and insects) We stock a wide range of bird fabrics – including Songbirds, Tropical birds, Raptors, and many Christmas collections with Winter birds.

This week we had a visit from one of our non-profit groups – the Ocean Conservancy. Stephanie came to our warehouse, visited my studio, and we discussed activist environmental art over lunch. She asked me to express their sincere appreciation for the support you/we have given to their programs over the years. Out of our $2 million given to charity, over $120K has gone to Ocean Conservancy. You can read more about our non-profit organizations on this page, and there are links to each organization’s website there as well. If you have a favorite one on this page, be sure to click through to their page and sign up for their emails to learn more about their work, and why we support them!

This week I shipped out my “Uncompahgre Fritillary” quilt, to be part of the SAQA “Camouflage” exhibit in Houston. You may recall I made this for an exhibit on endangered pollinators, and was a guest speaker on the topic of Art & Activism at CU Boulder, hosted by Endangered Species Coalition and Sierra Club. The lecture was recorded and you can watch the video on this page. (1st video, top left corner.)

Many of you have asked about the Northcott “Journey Home” panel by artist Karen Erickson, honoring those indigenous children who survived the Residential Schools. Now many quilters are making comfort quilts for these survivors, who are now precious elders. Northcott is doing ONE MORE PRINTING and we are collecting advance orders now. If you want to get in on this last printing, please contact our Customers Service, let us know how many you want, and we will contact you when they arrive in July. I will be meeting with Vanessa Genier, the founder of “Quilts for Survivors” when I go to Quilt Canada next month.

eQuilter is the sponsor of a $5K Mastery Award in Houston again this year. We know that many of you are finishing up and photographing your entries for the May 30 deadline. Wishing all of you GOOD LUCK!
