Americans United by Stitch

Our country seems to be straining at the seams, as we approach this election. However I am hopeful and optimistic that when we come through the pandemic and we can start to build a ‘new normal’, quilters will be the first to come together and celebrate our common ground.

I can’t tell you how much I miss seeing all of you…in workshops and at quilt festivals…in our classroom and in charity sewing groups…having tea together and talking about all-things-quilting. We will come together again, I know it. We will sit next to each other at our sewing machines, we will stand next to each other at quilt exhibits and strike up a chat with a stranger as we admire a quilt, and we will come together and share our stories of how we got through this year of 2020 that will go down in history.

You may have heard that a big wildfire exploded just outside of Boulder on Saturday. The worst of it was occurring just as I was about to start my Zoom lecture for the Visions Art Museum. I sent them a photo of the billowing tower of smoke, and I was just a wreck at the time, worrying about our business, our home, and my mom in a nursing home in NW Boulder. The VAM folks immediately and graciously gave me permission to reschedule. I went home and we had a family evacuation meeting, which fortunately was not needed.

The good news is that this lecture has been rescheduled for Saturday November 14, at the same time. (4 pm Pacific Time) So if you have a ticket, you can attend at that time, or watch the recording at a link later. If you missed out on registration, you could probably get a ticket to join us! So stay tuned for more details.

The slurry bombers and firefighters contained the eastern side of the fire late Saturday night, so we are no longer at risk. The last time we had a fire like this with windy conditions, it came within a mile of our place, so once you go through something like that (or worse) you will never experience a fire the same. Thank you for your calls and emails of concern. There is snow coming Sunday so if the firefighters can control the fire a few more days, we hope this fire can be contained. The giant fire up North near Fort Collins still has a long way to go. So we’ll have bad air quality for awhile, but I feel like the worst is past here in Boulder.

The photos above are of our eQuilter Charity Sewing Group. I hope these remind you of better times with your own group of quilter friends, and the good times we will have again some day…in 2021.

with hope for the future…

Free eQuilter Pattern – Lakeside Cabin

Allow yourself to venture into this peaceful twilight lakeside scene,
in tonight’s Free Quilt Pattern. A warm golden light shines from the cabin’s windows…reflecting on the water that gently laps on the shore. You can almost hear the crickets…and somewhere in the distance an owl is hooting. This quilt is a meditation in itself.

To make this 40″ x 60″ quilt design, you will start with this gorgeous scenic panel, then add 2 of the collection coordinates, and a Solid Black.

Smoke Gets In My Eyes

Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 31

As I write this, Boulder is experiencing a hazardous smoke event from the largest fire in Colorado history, Northwest of us. In addition there is a new fire today just west of us near Jamestown, which is now threatening NW Boulder. We went out to Celestial Seasonings next door, and we can see the flames and smoke in the first row of foothills, about 5 miles Northwest of here. We are in the Gunbarrel area, NE of Boulder.

We have big fires in the area every few years, but this time it is different. Our home and business are 5 miles East of the foothills, so we feel relatively safe from the flames, but the air quality is dangerous today…as so many of our friends in Western states have experienced in the last few months. As I write this, the fire-fighting jets are flying over our house. The winds have just shifted to the North so we are hopeful.

2020 is a year that none of us will ever forget.

Even the most optimistic of us has been challenged by this year’s events.

We’ve added new words and phrases to our vocabulary: social distancing, masking up, doom-scrolling.

It is a year of not only the Covid Pandemic, but also historic wildfires, a record-breaking hurricane season, and an epic struggle over the future of our country and the planet.

We may wish to escape from this reality, but we’ve been steeping in the colors, the stories, and the struggles of this year.

It is a year of unprecedented activism, in response to racism, human rights struggles, and climate change.

It is a year where many people have found their voice, their power, and have stood up to express their truth and hope for the future.

As artists, we can express ideas and emotions that are often impossible to put into words.

This year has shaken us to our core, but as new life springs in brilliant shades of green after a fire, so too will the quilt world explode with creativity and innovation when we get to the other side of 2020.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Halloween Fog

Black Cats, Skulls, Candles, Howling Wolves, Ravens, Victorian Wrought Iron Fences and Spooky Forest Silhouettes make up this Black and White quilt, which is a nod to B&W retro scary movies. This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern has been designed especially for Halloween 2020, which we know you are never going to forget!

This 53″ x 67″ quilt design is an achromatic ode to classic creepy films, and the monochrome vignettes are set off by frames of Solid Kona Black, and a White-on-White Spirograph Stars print.

We suggest that you freemotion stitch words and phrases into the white sashing, to commemorate the Halloween of 2020! Or maybe have a Round Robin autograph quilt…have several people sign the quilt (socially distanced, of course) and then embroidery over their signatures afterwards, to make a one-of-a-kind family story quilt that will intrigue your descendants.

We’ve stocked up on Glow-In-The-Dark Threads to help inspire your pandemic creative juices. Bwah-haha-ha!

Escapist Fantasy

Today I dropped off all of our ballots. Here in Colorado we get our ballots in the mail, and there are lots of official ballot dropboxes, so I just drove over to the dropbox. There was a long line of cars but things were moving along, and there was a festive atmosphere. There was a guy on a bicycle taking photos or a video of the long line and folks putting their ballots in the slot. People were smiling and waving at each other – sharing the moment with strangers. I came home with a big sense of relief.

I’ve noticed that lately we’ve been watching a lot of escapist TV. You know, Sci-Fi, Historic Costume Dramas, and Magical Fantasy. Tonight we started watching the remake of “The Right Stuff” which Disney has expanded into a stylish retro series with buff wannabe astronauts. I enjoyed the attention to detail in the costumes, sets and especially the colors.

We got the very sad news that the MQX shows are closing down forever. Online classes and lectures and exhibits are going to be a bridge to whatever comes next in our industry, and if we want these events to survive, we have to support their interim efforts.

As the months have ticked by during the pandemic, I watch those trips I would have taken, also passing by on my calendar. This week I was supposed to go to San Diego to give a lecture at the opening of the 2020 Quilt Visions exhibit. But guess what? I am still giving the presentation, and you can join us on Saturday afternoon, and support the Visions Art Museum as well. You don’t need to be a member to purchase a ticket.

I’ll be giving a power point Zoom lecture on Contemporary Quilting Trends….showing quilt images from Tokyo and QuiltCon (the last 2 shows I was able to attend and photograph in person) and also quilts from this brand new Visions exhibit. I’ll be talking about art, design and color trends that will be influencing us for the next couple years. If you’d like a creative boost, and some ideas to fuel your 2021 quiltmaking, please join us and visit our blog to purchase your ticket now!

eQuilter is sponsoring *several* exhibits and online events this year, and we remain committed to supporting the industry through these challenging times. We thank you for your support, which allows us to sponsor many important events like the SAQA Textile Talks, the Votes for Women exhibit, Sacred Threads traveling hospital exhibit, and more…

Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 30

Today was World Mental Health Day, and I decided to support my own mental health by participating in our state guild’s Fall Retreat which was of course held virtually through Zoom. I do have mixed feelings about Zoom meetings at this point but it is most positive because otherwise how could I spend time with my quilt buddies around the country and around the world?

It also may have occurred to you that today was 10-10-2020 which seems like it should be an auspicious date in a normal year. Ha.

This year I was scheduled to give my power point lecture “Trends in Contemporary Quilting” at 4 different quilt events in 3 countries, so I am thrilled to say that I finally get to do ONE of them in a week – next Saturday Oct 17 at 4 pm Pacific Time, for the opening of the Visions Art Museum’s biennial quilt exhibit. Yes it is virtual, so I am sad I can’t meet you Visions artists in San Diego, but it is LIVE which means we can still be together in the moment.

You don’t need to be a member of the Visions Art Museum to buy a ticket. (although I am sure they would love you to join and support their work!) I will be discussing contemporary quilting trends by reviewing the last few shows we could attend in person, and then talking about how the events of this year are likely to affect quiltmaking for the next year or two. My power point (“slide show”) will include selected works from this year’s juried exhibition, QV2020. If you’d like some ideas about where we’ve been and where we are going, please do join us!

I noticed Friday night that there were several quilters announcing on Facebook that they had been accepted into Quilt National which is due to open at the Dairy Barn in May 2021. Congratulations! What will the world be like by then? Will we be able to attend the opening? Who knows, but whether the opening is in-person or virtual, we will celebrate the opening of that exhibit, and the accomplishments of these quilt artists, with love and enthusiasm.

How Loss Opens Your Heart

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. As you know, we give 2% of sales to a list of charities, and one of them is for Breast Cancer Research. As of this month eQuilter has donated $312K to this one cause, as I wrote in last Saturday’s e-newsletter. My mother and mother-in-law are not the only women in my life who have been affected by this disease.

Over the years many people have asked about our philanthropy, and what inspired us to start our charity program. I think it is safe to say that anyone who has experienced a great loss, has had their heart cracked open, and so often we seek to fill that void by helping others. So I thought I’d share a story.

When I was 17 my family home dissolved as I moved to college. At 19 I had to take a year off to work, before I moved to California to go to design school. During that year I worked at Joseph Magnin in Cherry Creek. (Denver) I quickly made 2 friends who were my age – Bonnie and Kathy. During that year, these 2 beautiful sweet young ladies became my best friends. One morning when I arrived at work, I was called into the office. There were serious faces all around. I thought I was getting fired! No, they had called me in to tell me that Bonnie had been killed in a head-on collision by a drunk driver in Lefthand Canyon the night before. They asked if I would go to the funeral to represent the company. I was devastated, and had nobody to talk to but Kathy about this loss. We stayed friends after that year, even as we moved to different states, married and had kids.

Many years later Kathy and I shared our experience of having our bio kids first, then adopting overseas. I had lost a full term baby daughter during labor. We shared the adventure of foreign adoption, and then she kept going! In addition to her 3 bio kids, she adopted 5 siblings from Russia, and twins from Lithuania. One time they visited us with all 10 kids. She was Super Mom.

When Kathy was 50 she got breast cancer. 2 years later she lost her battle. The last time I spoke to her, she reminded me that every day is a gift, and to always take the opportunity to express love and reflect back the beauty in others. So for Kathy and all our other friends and family who have fought this disease, we keep raising money to search for a cure. Because of my visits to shanty towns, slums and favelas on several continents, I know for sure that every day I wake up is a gift…and another opportunity to help those in desperate need. That is how I met Kathy Price from Mission of Love (one of our other charity recipients), but that is another story…

So I say, better to have loved and lost a dear friend, and have my heart cracked open, than never to have shared those precious moments of friendship. I carry Bonnie and Kathy in my heart, and knowing them has made me a better person.

Sending out my warmest wishes and hugs to all of you fighting breast cancer and any other health challenge, during these troubled times. You are so precious. You will teach others about what is really important in life.

with hope for the future…
Luana and Paul
