Glass Half Full

Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 24

We are deeply saddened by the cancer death of Chadwick Boseman who played Jackie Robinson, the Black Panther, and other inspiring characters. We know many of you feel the same way because you wiped out our stock of Black Panther fabrics. RIP T’Challa.

The other big news is that the House Dress (or you may call it a MuuMuu) has replaced Sweat Pants as the lounging garment of choice during the Pandemic of 2020. The good news is we have stocked up on a variety of patterns so you can make your very own custom MuuMuu or Caftan to get you through the rest of this year. We are restocking some that have sold out, and will introduce some new patterns next week.

I have a photo of my mom in 1968 wearing her red Hawaiian MuuMuu with her hair down to her hips, when we lived in Southern California. I have to chuckle at how these trends come around again. (Scroll down for the photo.)

In response to your voracious appetite for Solids, we have expanded our product range and as of this morning we had 650 Solids in stock!

Similarly, we have stocked Solid/Tonal Hand-Dyes deeply (like Hoffman 1895) and currently have 350 colors in stock. (Scroll down on this page)

Today I was listening to an inteview with Julia Hartz who is the Co-Founder and CEO EventBrite. (On the NPR show ‘How I Built This’ on Planet Money.) Her discussion with host Guy Raz was very inspiring, and they spoke about the innovation that is taking place now because of the pandemic. Ways of communicating with people on the other side of the planet, have sped up technology about 20 years, to keep up with the demand for doing business in a different way. They spoke about the creative explosion of the Roaring Twenties which followed the 1918 pandemic, and it gives me hope to think about the innovation that will hopefully follow these challenging times. As always, I find that seeing the silver lining to the darkest times, or seeing the glass half full, helps me to move from day to day.

We are now on Twitter @eQuilterFabrics for those of you who have quit Facebook.
I find myself spending more time on Twitter these days, so thought maybe you’d like to meet me there!

Stars & Flowers – Symmetry & Chaos

Quilters love symmetrical shapes, especially geometric shapes like Stars and Flowers that can be dissected into shapes and stitched into blocks. Taking something that is wild and growing, and expressing it in an orderly symmetrical shape helps us to feel like we have more control over the rest of our lives. When we can sit down and make 10 or 20 blocks that are consistent, it gives us a feeling of satisfaction. That’s how many of us start out as quilters…making Star Blocks or Flower Blocks…right?

Some of my favorite fabrics are brilliant combinations of ordered symmetry and wild chaos. A field of flowers. A starry sky. Splashy abstract prints that have been cut up and tamed into a large scale traditional quilt, thereby making it something new and different. The Inner Child loves to teeter back and forth between structure and creative pandemonium. Make a plan, then take off on an unplanned tangent. Organize colors, and then throw them on the table to audition unexpected combinations.

When I get about halfway into a new project I always have about a week of doubt, wondering why I was so crazy to take on such a stupendous leap of faith. I just finished a week where I transitioned from paralyzing paranoia to happy dancing in the studio, as a creative gambit came into focus and I let out a huge sigh of relief. Have you had that experience too? I think it is pretty common for us creative types.

When we are stressed, our automatic pilot tends to turn on and go to something safe and predictable. However in these unpredictable times, as artists, we can travel too far down that tidy rabbit hole if we are not paying attention. This week I’d like to challenge you to take a walk on the wild side, with some exploding kaleidoscopes, permission to vision quest, or serendipitous creative backflips as an escape from the madness of the world outside. Inside our maker spaces we find joy, focus and purpose…and then “All’s right with the world.” (Robert Browning)

Quilting Arts Podcast Episode 5

Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 23

This week my interview was featured on the Quilting Arts Podcast, on the topic of COLOR. Set aside 40 minutes with a cup of tea (or something stronger) to hear this lively conversation about color trends with the hosts Susan Brubaker Knapp and Vivika Denegre. Look for Quilting Arts Episode 5 wherever you find your podcasts.

It’s Fire Season in the West. 185,000 acres are on fire in Colorado, and almost a million acres have burned in California, including the Big Basin Redwood Forest. (Which I visited in 2017 on a trip to speak at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles) A swirling weather pattern is bringing smoke to Colorado from Arizona and California, spreading into Nebraska. I see that many of my quilter friends in California have had to evacuate and go to shelters, just as school is starting, on top of the Covid danger. Some of these fires will be burning f or months. It feels like a repeat of what our Australian friends went through a few months ago.

Yes we are living through historic times, and I tell my kids that when they are my age, younger people will ask them what it was like…just as we have asked those who survived WWII what it was like. I wonder how many of you are documenting what is happening in a History or Story Quilt?

Coincidentally, this striking fabric came out earlier this year, meaning to be Macro-Cactus but I think it looks like the Covid virus. Maybe you’ll want some to put in a Story Quilt, and now you might want to add some Fire fabrics to that story also.

This week we got a very specific fabric for Sophie’s 2020 Story Quilt – an image of the CU Boulder mascots (Buffalo) in front of the Boulder Flatirons. If you know somebody who is a CU Buff alumni or football fan who would like this special panel, snap it up because it is a one-shot-deal! Sophie starts her freshman year of college on Monday, taking mostly online classes. She will only go to campus once a week for a chamber orchestra (small…and socially distanced!) and a private violin lesson.

I have recently updated our Face Mask Info Page with links to pages with Neck Gaiter instructions, plus a fantastic Japanese YouTube channel that will excite those of you tired of making the same old Face Mask design.

Fire Season in the West

Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 22

It is Fire Season in the West, and I am just now looking at a Colorado News website that seems to say we have 4 fires burning over 100,000 acres. Huge columns of smoke are towering and streaming over Boulder this afternoon, to the South and the North. The air quality is terrible, and we are being advised to stay indoors. We never used to have fires like this when I grew up here. The fires in California are in the news also. It is hot and dry, and when the wind kicks up, all bets are off. Our warehouse is about 5 miles East of the Boulder foothills, and there are no fires nearby at the moment, so we are mostly concerned about air quality….and our fellow Colorado residents who might be in harm’s way. When the forests burn we don’t see how it affects the wildlife, but we know is a threat to the deer, elk, moose, bears and mountain lions who live in our precious forests. I hope all of our friends in the vicinity of these fires can stay safe!

If not for the pandemic, Sophie would have been moving into the freshman dorms at college in a couple days. Her classes start a week from Monday. She has chosen to take mostly online electives, plus just an orchestra rehearsal in person, and a violin lesson in person, so she’ll be home most of the time. (And will continue to work at eQuilter part time.) Honestly we expect CU Boulder to be forced to shut down a few weeks after opening. I know that most of you have either family members or friends with kids who are struggling with education decisions now. My friends who are teachers really do not want to be in the classroom and be exposed. So everybody has a story and all I can say about this school year at this point is….hang on, it is going to be a bumpy ride.

I feel like we are in a ship traveling across the ocean, and we are at the midpoint. The departure shore has disappeared long ago, and the shore upon which we will arrive is still too distant to see clearly. We are all on this journey together, and I am so glad we have each other. My friendships and business relationships in this industry are what have kept me up on deck throughout this journey, and your emails and letters are the breeze that fills our sails. Thank you for your kind notes – I am hoping to catch up on my correspondence this weekend!

You may notice we have a brand new category of Cotton Knit Jersey this week. I have had requests for cotton knits from those who want to make neck gaiters to wear instead of masks. Just make sure you are making them double-layered and if possible with a filter added, so they are still effective. I have recently updated our Face Mask Info Page with links to pages with Neck Gaiter instructions, plus a fantastic Japanese YouTube channel that will excite those of you tired of making the same old Face Mask design.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Timber Gnomes

This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern delves into Scandinavian folklore, which is rich with stories of woodland and magical creatures such as Gnomes. (Also known as Nisse, Tomte or Tonttu.) These forest elves are believed to protect family and home/farm from bad luck. Mischievous gnomes might play tricks on you if you didn’t leave them little presents of sweets and drink. (Like the elves in Will Ferrell’s latest movie about Euro-Vision)

Here’s your chance to invite these protective Timber Gnomies into your home, with a Christmas and Forest theme that is rustic and charming.

To make this 56″ x 60″ quilt design, you will start with a 24″ x 44″ panel, add 3 coordinates from the collection, plus 2 Hoffman Hand-Dyes. Then finish it off with the Timber Gnome stripe for the engineered border. This is a holiday quilt that will delight the little people and the adults, and may hang in your cabin in the woods all year long.

Choose a Wool or Silk Batting, and a Flannel Backing to make the ultimate cozy Lap Quilt as you snuggle by the fire on Christmas Eve!

…from the ‘Timber Gnomies’ collection by Shelly Comiskey for Henry Glass.

Nature’s Balm

We have found over the last 21 years that Nature-themed fabrics are often the most popular. Wildlife, flowers, forest, birds, ocean, sky, fish and bugs make up a huge percentage of the fabrics that we cut and ship out to you. We know that when it is snowy and cold outside, these images bring us joy and comfort. When we look at trees, water, and mountains, it brings a sense of peace. We can almost hear the water lapping on the shore, the birds calling from the forest, and the wind rustling the leaves. Just as a scent can bring back a childhood memory, the colors and images of happy times can be captured in a quilt when we choose fabrics that touch those memories.

My family moved from California to Colorado when I was 10 years old. I was a Brownie, then a Camp Fire Girl in California. Then I was a Girl Scout for awhile in Colorado. So I had plenty of camping outings in the California woods and the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Later I went to a music camp near the Continental Divide. We would sneak out at night and walk to a nearby meadow, spread out blankets in the damp wildflowers and watch the shooting stars. For those of us who have a fierce love of Nature and wild things, we’ve tasted the elixir of Mother Earth and she whispers to us from the cells of our very being.

Right now it is fire season in Colorado. The smoke is now mixing with the ozone pollution and making it difficult to breath outside. The mountains are full of baby animals now, and I think of them when I see the smoke. My love of Nature has led to my adventures as a wildlife photographer, and after many close encounters with wildlife (including babies) my concern for the creatures in the forest and the ocean is very personal.

If you’ve placed an order with us before, you know about our list of charities. We support the Ocean Conservancy and the Wild Foundation because of their advocacy for critical conservation issues. I’ve gone to speak at federal EPA hearings, and I was invited to go to Washington DC this summer to lobby for Endangered Species, but of course the trip was cancelled due to the pandemic. I was to speak at the World Wilderness Congress in Jaipur India, but that was cancelled also. I’ve been asked to participate in a virtual lobbying effort on August 20th, and I will go and speak on behalf of species threatened with extinction, and will speak for all of you who care about these things. Feel free to send your thoughts about this to me and I will speak on behalf of you as well. Together we can continue to be a force for good on t he planet.

eQuilter is a sponsor for the ‘SAQA Textile Talks’ each Wednesday, and I urge you to register for these free weekly discussions about art quilts and textile arts. Like Nature, it is a balm for the soul.
