The focus panel is elegantly surrounded by Northcott’s famous Stonehenge textured coordinates, pieced in delicate diamonds and mountains, and bordered by the coordinating southwest stripe with rich, rainbow hues.
You can use this 58″ x 62″ quilt as a Large Lap quilt, a small Bed Quilt, or a fantastic wall-hanging! This makes a great gift for friends and family who enjoy the rich colors of the Southwest.

Things are not always as they seem. Would you
believe that this is a 12″ x 12″ miniature framed quilt?
At the Tokyo Quilt Festival they do not have a Miniature Quilt category.
Instead they have a Framed Quilt category which is miniature quilts in frames.
This little beauty is so finely pieced, it just boggles the mind. For those of
us who love piecing quilts, this kind of precise work is a special kind of
challenge…or a special kind of crazy? But we love oohing and aahing over all
kinds of amazing mind-blowing quilts, don’t we?
The artist’s name was not spelled out so I pasted the tiny name card onto the
tiny quilt image so she has credit where it is due!
This morning I am flying to QuiltCon so I can present an award at the ceremony
tonight in Austin Texas. I will be walking the show Thursday and Friday so if
you see me there please do stop and say hello! I am also going to the SAQA
event Friday evening, so I hope to see many of you there.
I am going to be photographing the show so next week, for those of you who can’t
go in person, I’ll have images to share with you. I also have a cousin in
Austin and we are going to get together and work on the family tree one night.
We have many ancestors who lived in Texas 100 years ago, so it seems
appropriate to explore those branches of the tree while on this trip!
We are preparing to cut the kits for MJ
Kinman‘s Elizabeth
Diamond Workshop coming up March 6-8. (You can do the Rainbow Unicorn
multicolor – or the Classic Blue Diamond from our kits.) Those new products are
going online in the next couple days, and if you purchase a kit and attend the
class, you can save on shipping and just pick it up in the classroom when you
arrive.
MJ is always a blast and we are so excited to have her returning
to our eQuilter classroom. Her Gemstone piecing is not quite as intricate
as the tiny quilt featured above, but it is for Intermediate quilters or
higher. Hope you can join us!

Here in Colorado
we’ve had a ridiculous amount of snow in the first half of the month – but
we’re having a sunny break from Winter this weekend. Our 2 weeks of almost nonstop
snow has created some ginormous icicles around town! However Spring is almost
right around the corner and it is going to be a gorgeous Spring season here,
with all the moisture.
I spent Valentines Day at the hospital with my mom, fortunately a minor injury
but it required a trip to the ER, XRays and a splint. Mom has had several falls
and is in a nursing home, so our time together is precious.
As I mentioned a week ago, I am curating an exhibit at IQM in Lincoln Nebraska,
that will open on June 26. If there is a chance you can come to the opening
reception, please save the date!
We still have room in MJ Kinman’s class for her stunning Elizabeth
Diamond quilt. MJ’s gemstone patterns have been runaway best sellers
for us, especially since she taught here in late 2018. We are offering a
special “Rainbow Unicorn”
multicolor version of the diamond, an eQuilter exclusive, and we will be
cutting class kits for the Rainbow and Blue versions of the diamond if you
order in advance. If you are still thinking about this class, NOW IS THE TIME TO SIGN UP if you’d
like us to cut a kit for you before the class. Check out MJ’s video about the exclusive Rainbow Unicorn Diamond quilt
here. We will also have a special eQuilter fabric gift for all workshop
attendees.
eQuilter is proud to be a Gold Sponsor of QuiltCon
in Austin this year, and watch out for our full page ad in the QuiltCon
Magazine that just arrived here this week. It has been so rewarding to closely
follow the growth of the MQG over the years, and to personally water many
Modern seeds around the world. It was originally my idea to start a Modern
category in Quilt Canada for instance, and we have sponsored that category
every since. When I travel and lecture about quilt trends, I spend a good chunk
of time showing and telling what Modern Quilting is all about, and how it is
changing each year. There has been a lot of overlap between Modern and Art
Quilting, which is my particular interest.
This year is shaping up to be very busy in terms of my traveling to lecture
about “International Quilt Trends”. I know many of you have come to
my power point lecture at events around the world, when I review the most
trend-setting quilts by cutting edge artists. See my travel schedule below, to
see if you can attend one of my lectures this year!
In the meantime check out my photo page for
the recent Tokyo Quilt Festival, and past QuiltCon
exhibits. I will be at the award ceremony in Austin Weds night, and walking the
show Thursday and Friday. Hope to see you there!

On the silence of a deep Winter night, with the Full Moon rising and Springtime just around the corner…a Snowy Owl mother snuggles with her owlets in a crystalline Blue landscape.
This Free Quilt Pattern starts with our wildly popular (eQuilter exclusive) digital printed Snowy Owl Family panel, and we’ve added in a snowflake print and 2 Hoffman Hand-Dyes to make a simple pieced frame for this exquisite 68″ x 54″ wildlife scene. Makes a wonderful gift for Harry Potter fans and Audubon members!
Check out our Metallic Threads to add some sparkle to this quilt design (we suggest silver or blue), and make sure you have the right metallic needles and Sewers Aid to have a smooth sewing experience with those opulent metallic threads.

This 54″ x 66″ quilt design would make a fantastic lap quilt or wall hanging for a retired service member, and we know this was designed with those Quilts of Valor projects in mind.

When trying to find a quilt from Tokyo to celebrate Valentines Day, I couldn’t decide, so you are getting 2 detail shots of 2 different quilts today.
The Cat quilt with Roses is by Naoko Suzuki. The swirling detailed quilt below (that looks like the creation of the world) is “Endless Love” by Kazuko Fujimura. Put them together and you have an expression of the endless adoration we feel for our cats.
I have over 100 photos up from the Tokyo show, with more on the way. You can check out the overall and detail shots of these 2 quilts on my photo page. Feel free to share the link!
I am also sneaking in a few photos from Sophie’s visit to the Hedgehog Cafe in Harajuku. We checked out the Cat Cafe from the outside, but why pay a bunch of money to hang out with kitties when we have 2 at home?
Yesterday we had some special guests in our eQuilter classroom. There is a local group of professional illustrators/artists who came over for portfolio reviews. We also had the art director for Leanin’ Tree greeting cards come over to partner with me on the portfolio reviews. We gave each artist a portfolio critique for their work being pitched for the textile/surface design industry, vs. the greeting card/paper industry. Susan looks at about 140K pieces of art per year, and I look at about 150K designs per year, so we made a great team.
Last night I went to the EPA building in Denver to speak at a federal hearing regarding the proposed rollback of the NEPA. (National Environmental Policy Act, which is now 50 years old.) This is part of our overall commitment to be a force for good in the world. We appreciate your support of our charity program which has raised $1.65 million for a list of charities including the Wild Foundation and Ocean Conservancy.

This 70″ x 70″ brilliant quilt features a large Butterfly central panel, plus coordinating stripe and floral allover print with colors that really POP on a black background. It will be hard to cut into these gorgeous fabrics, but the result will be worth it!

I’d like to give you a preview of a project I’ve been working on for awhile. In 2018 I was invited to curate an exhibit in 2020 for the International Quilt Museum (IQM) in Lincoln Nebraska. It was originally because of all the shows I go to around the world, so I could showcase some of the amazing talent I see outside the US. However as time went on, because I kept seeing art quilts expressing concern about what is happening to the environment, it came into focus as a project centering on climate change and global pollution.
You may be familiar with the “Love Your Mother” quilt challenge that eQuilter organized in 2018. It premiered in Houston that year, then traveled to Mexico and Chicago in 2019. This August it will be featured in a gallery at the Birmingham UK Festival of Quilts. If you come to the FOQ you can also come to my lecture on International Quilt Trends on Saturday Aug 1st at 2 pm.
This new project for the IQM is an invitational exhibit, and will have many big name quilt artists participating. I am humbled and honored by the artists who have agreed to send quilts, who are so passionate about the topic. It includes artists from all over the US, and also the UK, Russia, Canada, Japan and Australia.
IQM will be making an official announcement soon, but for those of you who might want to come to the opening reception and my lecture, I wanted to give you a chance to SAVE THE DATE – June 26, 2020. Please make a note of the date on your calendar and join us if you can! The exhibit will run through Nov 29.
Our daughter Sophie is graduating from high school in 3 months! She has college auditions this month, and will be the lead sound tech on the Boulder High School production of “Addams Family” next month.
I am posting more photos from the Tokyo Quilt Festival this weekend and through this week, so be sure to check out my photo page.
