A Better World Video and London Christmas

Here is a link to our 3rd video from Houston, with Lyric Kinard narrating a tour of “A Better World” exhibit. If you look closely, you might catch my portrait of Kathy Price, the director of Mission of Love, one of our longtime charity recipients. Our congratulations to all of the artists who created these portraits of their personal heroes!

As you may know, I am writing to you from London England this evening. I here visiting a friend who has been in and out of the hospital this year, and I managed to get very cheap tickets because I arrived on Election Day. Apparently nobody wants to fly to London on Election Day.

Yesterday I went on a tour of the Royal Opera House, including the costume department! They have about 24 people working at the Covent Garden location (yes the same Covent Garden in My Fair Lady), making costumes for opera and ballet. Lots of velvet and tulle lots of embroidery and applique. They have another costume and set production center in Thurrock, where they employ apprentices in scenic art, carpentry, metal work and costuming. The last ten years I have been trying to go on backstage tours whenever possible… from Opera houses to Ballet and Shakespeare theaters… to peek into the costume workshops and storage rooms. I have a friend who is a costume curator and we’ve talked about putting together a costume tour in Europe someday. You never know!

Tonight, my London friend took me to see the one-man-show with 80 year old Sir Ian McKellen, and it was one of the most fantastic evenings of theater I’ve ever seen. (You will probably know him as Gandalf in the LOTR movies, but his award-winning career spans 6 decades and countless Shakespeare plays.) I actually got a photo with him, which I am posting on my Facebook page. When we came out after the show, it was raining cats and dogs. I walked about a mile back to my hotel amid sirens and a monsoon-like rain, and every article of over- and under-garments were soaked and now there are flood warnings. But hey, it rains in London, right?

I did visit Liberty of London today, because I especially wanted to see their seasonal Christmas Shop on the top floor. I thought I was going to a museum today, but I ended up spending most of my time at Liberty, then walking back on Regent Street peeking in shops and dodging singing costumed elves and a bicycle-riding mob of Santas. Tomorrow is my museum day, and I fly home Monday after a very inspiring long weekend. Hope you are having a productive pre-holiday weekend!

The Blessing of a Generous Heart

The “Maker” trend has been growing and extending from older to younger generations for many years now. The idea of making something special for a loved one, instead of buying a plastic manufactured gift, has been gaining traction as we all think about the non-sustainability of giving more stuff to people who already have too much stuff. However the value of a one-of-a-kind handmade gift …is becoming more precious than ever.

The busy noisy world of holiday retail stands in stark contrast to the beauty of a Full Moon shining on a silent snowy winter landscape. More and more we find ourselves drawn to home…to stitch, to cook, to spend time with our loved ones. Is there anything more cherished than a cold snowy day spent indoors with our fabric, needle and thread, anticipating the joy our gift will bring?

When we bring a Christmas tree into our home, and the house fills with the fragrance of evergreen, we find ourselves longing to breathe in the intersection between the Natural World and our busy human holiday world. The holiday season is filled with these intersections…poinsettias for the table, snowflakes on our eyelashes, winter birds twittering at our birdfeeder, the sound of migrating geese overhead, and of course the Nature-themes that we love in our quilt fabrics!

The bald eagles are migrating through our area this week. We had 2 of them circling over our house today, and I saw a 3rd one perched on a telephone pole near a busy intersection. When I see them, I stop and pull over, and savor the moment. This is a gift that Nature gives to us freely, just as we give our handmade gifts to our friends and family. As we finish putting our loving stitches in our holiday projects, we experience a full heart and remember…that it is more sacred to give than to receive. Quilters know the blessing of a generous heart. We know our love will keep on giving through our quilts, long after our needles are put away.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Stonehenge Wild Horses

Catch the wild spirit of a herd of Mustangs, in this week’s Free Quilt Pattern….with galloping horses on a Southwest landscape. You can almost hear the thundering hooves echoing in the Canyon!

This 67″ x 67″ captures the energy of a stampede, contained in a pieced border using 3 Earth-and-Sky colors of Stonehenge Gradations. We are imagining this with a yarn-dyed plaid flannel or Southwest flannel backing, to make it a super snuggly lap quilt for those chilly nights out on the prairie.

New Videos from Houston!

Did you catch our video tour of the Sapphire Blue and White Quilt installation from the Houston Quilt Festival? Just in time for the announcement of Pantone’s new Color of the Year a couple days ago-the 2020 Color is “Classic Blue”.

Our next video is up now – with a review of the “Altar Offerings” exhibit. These are beautiful memorial quilts made for the Day of the Dead, made by Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli and her students. You will see many familiar fabrics in this video, and we carry them in our Frida/Succulent category.

You can see these 2 new videos, 118 previous show/festival videos, and the upcoming 7 Houston videos on this page.

After visiting Mexico City several times for the Mexican Quilt Festival (and visiting Frida’s house and studio several times!) I appreciate the beautiful art and colors of the Dia de Muertos more than ever. I had lunch with a dear friend Thursday who has been suffering from brain cancer. Last night I got the call that she is gone. I am going to put together a small piece to celebrate her life, inspired by Janes’s altar quilts. I feel so fortunate that I had one last meeting with her, and we were able to share our love and friendship one last time before she left this earthly plane.

Donations are still trickling in for my Earthworks fundraiser – and soon my Rocky Mountain Poison quilt will go to live at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln NE. Everyone who contributes will be invited to a virtual tea, but the fundraiser is coming to an end soon.

Next week I have another very short trip to visit another friend who has been ill – this time in London. I got half price tickets because I am arriving on Election Day. My friend is warning me to stay away from Parliament when I arrive. I plan to go to the V&A on Saturday, if anyone there would like to join me.

Superhero Quilts from Houston

We have posted our first video from Houston – the Sapphire Blue Quilt exhibit. When you have 8 minutes to relax, enjoy this spatial tour of this gorgeous installation.
Feel free to share!

Here are photos from Houston Quilt Festival, if you’d like to study these in more detail.

The world needs more Superheroes, which is why these hero archetype franchise movies just keep coming…we especially love the ones with Super Females! Being the nerd that I am, I was super excited about the ComicCon-inspired quilt exhibit in Houston this year. Many of the pieces in this section celebrated Girl Power, including characters from pop culture, movies, etc.

n I am showing you 2 of the quilt details here, along with female superhero fabrics at eQuilter now.

The top left is “Okoye – Wakanda Warrior” by Laurie Ceesay Landree.

Artist Statement: After watching the movie “Black Panther” I was inspired to make a portrait quilt of Okoye, the General of the Dora Milaje female warriors who protect the Black Panther. I was intrigued by the bald head and the beautiful costume she wore.

The lower right is “Elements of the Universe” by Carolyn Crump, Earamichia Brown, and Michelle Flamer.

Artist statement: A desire to create bold strong women superheroes, we all agreed that we wanted to represent and protect the Earth. Terra, Cyclona, and Cinder united in their desire to save the earth from the destructive impact of climate change, join forces to harness the Elements of the Universe: Earth Wind and Fire.

Did you see my announcement Saturday about speaking at the World Wilderness Congress in Jaipur India?

Quilting is my Super Power. How about you?
