Our next video is up now – with a review of the “Altar Offerings” exhibit. These are beautiful memorial quilts made for the Day of the Dead, made by Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli and her students. You will see many familiar fabrics in this video, and we carry them in our Frida/Succulent category.
You can see these 2 new videos, 118 previous show/festival videos, and the upcoming 7 Houston videos on this page.
After visiting Mexico City several times for the Mexican Quilt Festival (and visiting Frida’s house and studio several times!) I appreciate the beautiful art and colors of the Dia de Muertos more than ever. I had lunch with a dear friend Thursday who has been suffering from brain cancer. Last night I got the call that she is gone. I am going to put together a small piece to celebrate her life, inspired by Janes’s altar quilts. I feel so fortunate that I had one last meeting with her, and we were able to share our love and friendship one last time before she left this earthly plane.
Donations are still trickling in for my Earthworks fundraiser – and soon my Rocky Mountain Poison quilt will go to live at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln NE. Everyone who contributes will be invited to a virtual tea, but the fundraiser is coming to an end soon.
Next week I have another very short trip to visit another friend who has been ill – this time in London. I got half price tickets because I am arriving on Election Day. My friend is warning me to stay away from Parliament when I arrive. I plan to go to the V&A on Saturday, if anyone there would like to join me.

The details in this close-up wildlife portrait makes this a very special piece of artwork. The central digital-printed panel is set in a pieced frame with weathered gray wood and stone textures, give this a rugged look in a modern color story.

Alternating blocks of Birds and Flowers are set on point, using Hoffman digital prints. We’ve used 3 colors of Stonehenge textures to complete this lovely quilt design which evokes balmy days and happy chirping birds.

We have posted our first video from Houston – the Sapphire Blue Quilt exhibit. When you have 8 minutes to relax, enjoy this spatial tour of this gorgeous installation. Feel free to share!
Here are photos from Houston Quilt Festival, if you’d like to study these in more detail.
The world needs more Superheroes, which is why these hero archetype franchise movies just keep coming…we especially love the ones with Super Females! Being the nerd that I am, I was super excited about the ComicCon-inspired quilt exhibit in Houston this year. Many of the pieces in this section celebrated Girl Power, including characters from pop culture, movies, etc.
n I am showing you 2 of the quilt details here, along with female superhero fabrics at eQuilter now.
The top left is “Okoye – Wakanda Warrior” by Laurie Ceesay Landree.
Artist Statement: After watching the movie “Black Panther” I was inspired to make a portrait quilt of Okoye, the General of the Dora Milaje female warriors who protect the Black Panther. I was intrigued by the bald head and the beautiful costume she wore.
The lower right is “Elements of the Universe” by Carolyn Crump, Earamichia Brown, and Michelle Flamer.
Artist statement: A desire to create bold strong women superheroes, we all agreed that we wanted to represent and protect the Earth. Terra, Cyclona, and Cinder united in their desire to save the earth from the destructive impact of climate change, join forces to harness the Elements of the Universe: Earth Wind and Fire.

MJ Kinman has designed a stunning new “Elizabeth Diamond” gemstone quilt pattern that is offered in 4 tonal color combinations. Now she has created a new exclusive multicolor version for eQuilter which we call the “Unicorn Rainbow Diamond” and she is coming to teach BOTH versions of this beauty March 6-8. Registration is NOW open, and we have a discounted hotel rate at the Hampton Inn nearby.
Here’s my big news for the week: I have been invited to speak as an Artist-Activist-Curator at the World Wilderness Congress in Jaipur India, in March 2020. I will give a TED style talk to the congress delegates, and will also be on a panel of environmental activist curators and artists. They are also arranging for me to speak to students who will be attending part of the weeklong conference. This has been in the works for awhile, but now that it is official, I am honored to share this news.
From the “Wild 11” conference website: “Though the challenges to life on Earth are great, there are many reasons to hope, not the least of which is the growing recognition that wilderness is not a luxury, but the foundation of life on Earth. Protecting and expanding wilderness is now regarded as a key solution for preventing the Sixth Extinction and addressing the climate crisis.”
If you go to our charity page, you can read more about the Wild Foundation, the organizers of this event. A very special thank you to all of you who have supported our environmental/conservation efforts.
One of my other ART-Activism projects is nearing a close: I am donating my quilt “Rocky Mountain Poison” to raise money for Earthworks, and then the quilt will go to live at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln NE. Please take a moment to read the story about this fundraising project, and perhaps make a small contribution if this touches your heart. All contributors will receive an invitation to a Virtual Tea webinar with photos and stories from my travels to quilt festivals around the world in 2019.
I will be sending out details for this Virtual Tea event to all of my GoFundMe contributors as soon as the fundraiser ends.

You may have heard that we got a couple feet of snow here in Colorado yesterday. I had friends call from Florida and London to see if we were Ok! Yes 6 of our 25 employees braved the crazy weather and came in for part of the day. They were like determined Christmas Elves along with Paul who opened up early…because this is the week of our big Thanksgiving Sale and they wanted to keep processing those packages going out to all you good girls and boys! *wink*
Sophie and I went out and shoveled the 2 feet of snow for awhile, and then we made friends with the neighbor who just bought a new snow blower. Later my car got stuck in the road and the neighbors came out to help us get unstuck. That’s the Colorado holiday spirit.
Our golden retrievers had a blast leaping through the deep snow like bunny rabbits, but our cats were not as enthusiastic. I managed to catch the look on Dante’s face as he perched on a CD tower and looked out the window. This photo goes well with this Helpful Kitty fabric we just got in – you just gotta love those helpful cats who jump on your sewing machine, your piano, your computer, or even your kitchen table to ‘help’.
We’ll be in the office today to take your phone calls and answer emails before the Thanksgiving holiday tomorrow. Sorry we kind of had a Snow Day yesterday. Be sure to check out our Thanksgiving Clearance and yes…we promise not to bombard you with Black Friday emails because we are a family-owned business and we align more with Small Business Saturday.
I am meeting today with the executive director of the Wild Foundation and I should have some really exciting news in the Saturday newsletter. For those of you who appreciate our environmental donations, and our sponsorship of art exhibits, stay tuned!
Many thanks to all of you who have contributed to my fundraiser for Earthworks. I am so excited that we have reached the halfway mark, and I would appreciate you sharing with those who might want to support this environmental cause! I am donating my Rocky Mountain Quilt and hope to raise $5K by next weekend. Everyone who contributes will be invited to a Virtual Tea – an online webinar about my work as an artist – and featuring photos I’ve taken in my travels around the world in 2019. I will be sending out details for this Virtual Tea event to all of my GoFundMe contributors as soon as the fundraiser ends.
