Free eQuilter Pattern – Klimt, the Kiss

Klimt-inspired fabrics have been some of our most popular products over the years, and this week’s Free Quilt Pattern features the masterpiece ‘Kiss’ panel.

‘The Kiss’ is surrounded by Klimt coordinates, including Geometrics and Venetian Glass, richly ornamented with gold accents and gold spatter. These iconic design elements will forever say ‘Klimt’ to art lovers.

The Gustav Klimt collection portrays an opulent look that rivals the gold-leaf laden paintings of the Viennese painter.

Superhero Quilts

To the Conscious Holiday Consumer:
We are not going to flood your inbox with obnoxious Black Friday emails.
Aren’t you glad? 🙂

Instead we are going to share photos and videos and insights from Quilt Festival in Houston.
2% of your purchase will go to charity, as always.

Watch for our Thanksgiving Sale.
Thanks for your support of our family-owned business.

Here is a detail from Katalin Horvath’s “Aquaman” quilt, in the Superhero and Comic category at Houston. The exhibit was full of superheroes who fight for what’s right, and protect the innocent. There were some of these quilts that I only knew about…because I have kids. “Adventure Time”, the TARDIS, Zelda, Black Panther and Batman all made an appearance here.

I think we live in a time where we and our kids need to be inspired by superheroes. I applaud the quilters who contributed to this category. You made me smile.

You will find my first batch of photos from Houston here on my photo page. Please feel free to share!

This week we have 2 video interviews with Jacqueline de Jonge, from her visit to our classroom. Jacqueline is from the Netherlands, and travels around the world teaching her special piecing techniques. She is known for her brilliant color sense, and on top of that she is a lovely human being.

Color and Design Part 1 – Traveling and Teaching, Happiness 2.0 New Design.

Color and Design Part 2 – Color Palette, a Color Challenge, and Hotfix Crystals.

Today I am traveling to Tucson for the Color Marketing Group annual conference. This is a collaborative event where color trend experts gather from around the world, to forecast color palettes that will affect design choices over the next few years. Then I bring that forward vision back to eQuilter, to plan our buying for the next year.

This week I am launching a GoFundMe fundraiser for Earthworks, the organization that helped us when Sophie was poisoned in her school. The International Quilt Museum asked to acquire my Rocky Mountain Poison quilt (premiered at the UN in Geneva, seen by over 100K people) so I am ‘auctioning’ the quilt as a fundraiser for Earthworks, and they will donate the quilt to the IQM for future stewardship.

If you would like to support my efforts, visit my GoFundMe blog page here. Scroll down for more details, and links to these organizations’ pages. My humble thanks to those of you who are contributing to this effort.

To those veterans and their families on our list, we thank you for your service. Thank you also to the quilters who contribute their time and efforts to the Quilts of Valor project. We wish you all a Happy Veterans Day.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Seurat Sunday Afternoon

Enter the French pointillist Georges Seurat’s painting ‘A Sunday Afternoon’ in this week’s Free Quilt Pattern, capturing a serene moment on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

Start with a digital-printed reproduction of Seurat’s masterpiece, then add impressionist brush strokes and stone textures in a pieced border, to create this 60″ x 48″ quilt design.

This painting also inspired Stephen Sondheim’s musical play ‘Sunday in the Park with George’, which opened on Broadway in 1984, and returned to NYC in 2017 during the revival of the play with Jake Gyllenhaal.

This huge scenic painting lives at the Art Institute in Chicago…but you can have your own copy to hang in your own home gallery!

Featuring the ‘Seurat’ collection by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

Luana’s campaign for EARTHWORKS & IQM

https://www.gofundme.com/f/luana039s-campaign-for-earthworks-amp-iqm

This quilt was made for the 2016 exhibit “Water is Life” which premiered at the United Nations in Geneva Switzerland. It has traveled around the world to tell the story of ‘Rocky Mountain Poison’ – when the Gold King Mine spill turned the Animas River orange with toxins – and sickened communities downstream.

Then my daughter was poisoned by VOCs (fracking byproducts – benzene styrene and toluene) in her public school, and Earthworks.org helped our community to identify what was happening. I never could have figured out that she needed to be tested for VOC exposure on my own.  They educated us so we had the strength and courage to go after those who were poisoning our children and covering up the truth.
https://earthworks.org/

After this story quilt traveled for 3 years, seen by thousands of people in many venues around the world, I offered to sell this art quilt to benefit Earthworks…as a thank you for the work they do. (scroll down for image of quilt)

The original idea of a fundraiser auction began to grow into a larger dream when the International Quilt Museum (IQM) in Lincoln NE asked to acquire the quilt!…Your generosity in making this dream come to fruition is greatly appreciated by Earthworks, the IQM and our family.

This quilt is being donated by artist Luana Rubin to raise money for Earthworks.org, then they will donate the quilt to the International Quilt Museum, who will steward this historic work of art for future generations.
https://www.internationalquiltmuseum.org/

Thank you for supporting my efforts to protect the Earth and her future generations of children, by supporting Earthworks, and the acquisition of ‘Rocky Mountain Poison’ for IQM.  Now I know my art quilt will continue to tell this important story long after I am gone.

BLUE – A Trend or a Classic?

If you were in Houston last week, you could not fail to notice the presence of BLUE….

The huge Sapphire Quilt Collection was a centerpiece for the show, giving one a complete immersion experience walking into a vertical cube of stacked Blue and White quilts, gently fluttering as we walked under, through and around this mammoth installation. (Remember the Red and White quilts several years ago? This was the Blue and White version.)

There was also a beautiful Indigo quilt exhibit close by, from the Japanese master quilter Shizuko Kuroha. You will have seen my photos of her work in my Tokyo Quilt Festival albums.

During Quilt Market we saw so many Blue and White fabric collections, including many Faux Shibori printed fabrics.

Blue is a color of trust, patience, dignity, and serenity. It is seen as color of stability and reliability, a traditional color that gives a sense of security. Sitting in a blue room can lower your pulse rate. When we are stressed, we wrap ourselves in Blue.

Blue is the color of bluejeans, traditional Indigo dyeing, and it is the color of the sky and water. Blue is ubiquitous.

However Blue also manages to be a trend….when we’ve had enough of playing with Pink and Red and Orange and Lime Green…our eye returns to restful Blue.

In my very first design job in 1981, my boss explained that Blue always outsells all the other colors by at least two-to-one. Often when I see new fabric collections, I wonder why they left out the color blue which is usually the top-selling color.

During chaotic times, we crave safe calming colors…such as Blue.

So is this return to Blue a Trend, or a ‘Classic’?

Next week I’ll be attending the Color Marketing Group International Summit in Tucson Arizona, and I’ll be watching out for those Blues!

The photo above shows just one section of the Sapphire Quilt Collection in Houston, and I’ve added a couple Blue fabrics from our “Blue and White” category. Watch out for our Houston photos and videos coming up in the next couple weeks.
