Creative Nudge – The Picnic

This week I am bringing you another favorite quilt from the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK last month. This is “The Picnic” by Gail Thomas, who lives in British Colombia, Canada.

This figurative quilt depicts the innocence of childhood, and the playful creative qualities that so many of us lose when we ‘grow up’. You can see this quilt in detail on my photo page, in my Birmingham album.

As the heat of summer subsides, and the days are milder, this is a scene we might see in any neighborhood – children playing under the spreading branches of a protective tree. Our neighbors have 2 small children who like to play under the big tree in their front yard, and their playtime today reminded me of this quilt.

I’ve set it in a collage of seasonal prints, including a forest, a field of sunflowers, and falling leaves. We celebrate the coming season of Harvest with fabrics that capture the colors of Autumn. It reminds me of my own kids when they were little….jumping in piles of leaves, gathering armloads of sunflowers, wandering along a forest path dappled with bright sunlight. There are many ways to celebrate our memories, with our quiltmaking.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Lakeside Lodge

Is Fall your favorite season?

As Autumn approaches and temperatures cool, we are drawn to the beauty of the outdoors again… as Mother Nature spreads her cloak of golden fiery colors across the landscape.
In this week’s Free Quilt Pattern we find a scenic panel with details that remind us of the sounds of rushing water, the whispering of the wind in the trees, and the comfort of our canine companions.

We’ve combined the scenic panel, a richly detailed landscape coordinate, and 4 Hoffman Hand-Dyes for this generous-sized 72″ x 79″ quilt. Put a Flannel Backing on this beauty and you’ll have a snuggle-worthy bed quilt ready before the snow flies.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Peony Dance

Many of us have a special love for Japanese-themed fabrics, and this Free Quilt Pattern is an especially beautiful example of a delicate Nippon-inspired garden view.

In this 50″ x 66″ quilt design, a lovely lady in a kimono is resting in a Peony Garden, surrounded by bamboo leaves, with Mount Fuji in the distance. Subtle shades of Parchment, Peony Pink and Green Tea are used in the fine details of this digital-printed collection.

Minimal piecing makes this a quick project, and a great gift for someone with fond memories from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Looking and Seeing

Our eQuilter friends and customers are very special people. They are not just quilters. They are travelers, avid readers, collectors, volunteers, Nature lovers, animal lovers, history buffs and problem solvers. You are not just quilters….you have multiple creative passions and you love to share those interests with others…who often become members of your extended family.

Over the last 20 years since we started in our basement, I’ve read your letters, talked to you at quilt festivals, and watched you create in our classroom. The fires that feed your creativity and your fierce friendships are a force to be reckoned with, and you inspire me to think of more ways to be of service to those creative flames. Now we can share and inspire each other even faster with so many different social media platforms.

But still, there is nothing like being in a room full of creative people who have slowed down enough to make things by hand, and share the experience with each other. This weekend we are hosting Cas Holms who is here from Kent UK, for a FRCQ workshop. There are familiar faces, and new friends. When there are long stretches of silence because everyone is so deeply engrossed in their work, it is a sacred silence.

When our middle school art class took a field trip to the art museum in the city, I was the kid who would stand in front of one spectacular piece and look…and look…and look…trying to figure out how it was done…until they came and dragged me to the next room. That is something that quilters do too. We go to quilt exhibits, cluster around a fantastic piece, and admire the details. There is a difference between just looking at something, versus actually *seeing* what is in front of us. The ability to look and really *see* color for instance, is something that can be a gift in childhood, but most adults can learn to do this too. It is a type of meditation, something we all need in this chaotic world.

I know many of you get your cup of coffee or tea on Sunday mornings and sit down to have a look at all the new artwork we are introducing…and I know from your emails that you also really *see* the special details in the incredible artwork that is being reproduced now with digital-printing technology. It’s a wonderful time to be a fabriholic and textile-collector.

Thank you for telling your friends about our charitable projects – we appreciate your support!

Creative Nudge – Small but Mighty

Last week I visited the Rocky Mountain Wa Shonaji Quilt Guild in Denver Colorado, and admired their annual quilt exhibit at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library. The name Wa Shonaji comes from the Swahili language and means “People Who Sew”. These ladies come to our monthly Charity Sewing Day to help make comfort quilts, but I was anxious to see what kind of quilts they made…for themselves.

There were several quilts of note in the exhibit, with wonderful stories to tell. One wall of the exhibit was a display of Quilt Block interpretations, and this one by Mary Lassiter really caught my eye.

The “Pine Burr” was designated the official quilt of Alabama by their legislature in 1997. Loretta Pettway Bennett created the Alabama Pine Burr quilt. Her mother, Quinnie Pettway (a Gee’s Bend quilter) taught her to make the Pine Burr quilt pattern.

Mary Lassiter has created a contemporary version of this quilt block pattern, and it literally bristles with energy. I would call this block Small but Mighty.

We are very excited to host Cas Holmes in our classroom this weekend, who has come from the UK to teach a workshop for the FRCQ. (Front Range Contemporary Quilters) There will be lots of machine sewing, hand stitching, drawing and painting going on in our classroom in a few days!

Cas is featured in an article in the brand new issue of Quilting Arts Magazine, so we are having fun reading about her work, and admiring the photos.

Jacqueline de Jonge‘s class is less than a month away, and the last few spots are filling up. Give us a call if you have any questions about this 3-Day workshop. Jacqueline is a master piecer, a color guru, and an international quilt celeb. (She is coming from the Netherlands) We are excited to bring her unique designer’s eye to Colorado.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Valkyrie

You might need to turn on ‘Flight of the Valkyries‘ by Wagner (from the opera Die Walkure from the Ring Cycle) to fully appreciate this one!

On a Monday morning when you prepare yourself to face the week, this Norse Goddess-Warrior will help you to pick up your Flaming Shield and Sword of Truth, and venture out into a challenging world. If you’ve seen the superhero movies about Thor and Asgard, you’ve met some of the Nordic mythic characters with magical swords, drawing energy from the powers of the Universe.

This exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Design features our own digital-printed central panel, with a Viking Shaman-Warrioress and a stone castle backdrop. We’ve combined the panel with Stonehenge textures, a digital printed flame, and a Hoffman Hand-dye, to create a pieced border for this striking portrait quilt.

Hang this 50″ x 61″ quilt on the wall to inspire your Inner Superhero, or use it as a Lap or Nap quilt for your own superpower dreams.

Our Brand is Compassion

20 years ago, after leaving the fashion industry, I started this business with my husband Paul, because I fell in love with big-hearted quilters and the quilting industry.

Quilters are still one of the most generous and compassionate group of people I have ever met. Our charity program was inspired by your altruism, and together we’ve built a philanthropic force that saves lives and fights for the environment. Does that sound good to you? Then this is the place for you.

Last week I was contacted by one of our customers in Australia. She was touched by a story I posted on my Facebook page. She wanted to donate purchased fabric for a Catholic community that is housing migrants on the border, that is making quilts for these families. We are adding to her purchase and filling up a box to go to these quilters at the Kino Border Initiative. If you live in the Nogales AZ area, perhaps you would like to help them?

Quilters are asking us if they can make quilts for the Bahamas. Honestly what these people need now is life-saving disaster relief…food water clothing medicine and temporary housing. I am contacting our relief partners and seeing who has a reputable contact who we can work with because the recovery will go on for a long time.

This week my “Mothers of the World” quilt was installed at the Peace Tech Lab, part of the US Institute of Peace in Washington DC. Many thanks to Lisa Ellis and Barbara Hollinger from Sacred Threads, who took on the installation project for me! Our Charity Sewing Group is making quilts for a Peace Tech Lab project in India. We are making sleeping mats for teenage girls who sleep on slabs of cardboard in a Mumbai slum.

Yesterday I went to downtown Denver to speak at a formal EPA hearing about worsening air quality and ozone levels in the Denver/Front Range area. You can read about this on my personal Facebook page. I speak on behalf of all those who have respiratory issues due to air pollution.

In addition to the 7 charities list on your checkout page, we also give money to special projects such as hurricane disaster relief. Our comfort quilt projects (in partnership with Mission of Love, Engineers Without Borders, and many quilt guilds) have distributed over 14,000 quilts to those in need over the last 20 years. Will you join us?

Thank you for telling your friends about our charitable projects – we appreciate your support!
