Hello from Churchill

This week I am up in Northern Manitoba to photograph polar bears and other arctic wildlife. It has been super cold which means Hudson Bay has frozen and most of the bears are out on the ice feeding, after their long summer fast. We had a nice close encounter with a mother bear and cub, and also with an Arctic Fox and a Crossfox. (A Silvery Red Fox.) Right now it is -9 F, -18 F with windchill. The cold temps mean the skies are clear so we are hoping to see some Northern Lights tonight.

I have had time to reflect on the quilts on display in Houston this year. First of all I want to thank all the artists who made quilts for our Love Your Mother challenge. 17 of these were juried into the exhibit, and 6 received prizes, including a BERNINA 570 QE, an Eversewn machine from Brewer Sewing and Quilting Supplies, and eQuilter gift certificates. Thank you to our co-sponsors! …and congratulations to the top prize winner Elizabeth Budd. The exhibit will travel and we are working on these future venues. We will let you know the schedule!

eQuilter sponsored a new IQA category this year – the Animal Kingdom. I am so excited about this new category, and I want to encourage all you amazing quilters to consider making an Animal-themed quilt for next year. This can include birds, fish, insects, tigers, elephants, cats, dogs and horses. Knowing how quilters love animals, I think this should be the biggest category. Or should I say… CATegory?

eQuilter sponsors the Modern Quilt category at Quilt Canada, and this summer the winning quilt was a red and white quilt about the indigenous women here who are missing…inspired by the Red Dress Project on the same topic. At the Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg there was a Red Dress exhibit. Last night we had a lecture by a Cree Elder, talking about her childhood and all of her siblings being separated and sent to residential schools. I am grateful that we can make art to bring awareness to these topics about women.

We have a close family friend who has lost their house in the California Fires, and when I get back I will see if there is interest in organizing a comfort quilt drive. Right now those affected have more urgent basic needs, so please donate to trusted organizations that are on the ground involved in the rescue operations.

Free Pattern – Cat-i-tude Purr-fect Together

This week’s Free Exclusive Quilt Pattern features the ever-popular Paisley Cats from Benartex. These adorable prints now include pairs of nuzzling kitties and more fabulous paisley coordinates.

Our colorful Free Quilt Design combines frames from three exquisitely detailed kitty panels, then uses the coordinating paisley stripe to piece the quilt. The opulent paisley theme is richly embellished with gold metallic, giving this Kitty quilt the Royal treatment.

The 74″ x 74″ quilt design makes a fantastic wall hanging for a Sun Room (maybe where your cat likes to sleep in the sun) or makes a beautiful quilt for a young person who likes to cuddle up with their cats.

… from the ‘Cat-i-tude’ collection by Ann Lauer for Benartex.

And don’t miss the wonderful ‘Kitty Glitter‘ and ‘Color Intensity‘ quilt patterns.

Creative Nudge – In the Mood for Blue

I’m always in the mood for Blue, how about you?

In my very first design job, my boss told me that Blue always outsells every other color two-to-one. That was true in fashion design, and it has weight in the textile and quilting industries. I am not even going to go into our irrational feverish love of All-Things-Indigo!

One of the quilts that captured the attention and admiration of the crowd at the Awards Ceremony last week in Houston, was Andrea Brokenshire’s “Blue Anemone” quilt. (shown above, in a collage of Blue Dragonfly fabrics) Andrea paints her quilts like a watercolor painting, then stitches on top of her painting, and the results are breathtaking!

One of the reasons her work was so amazing, was her unusual perspective…a Super Macro image of the heart of the blossom…with exquisitely rendered details of the giant flower. She is a master with the paintbrush and the sewing machine.

I’ve been watching Andrea on Facebook for many years, and I know she was thrilled to win a $5K prize in Houston this year. We finally met in person as she stood in front of her award-winning quilt. We look forward to seeing Andrea’s artistry in the future.

I am writing to you from Winnipeg, and I visited the Nelson Mandela exhibit at the Human Rights Museum here today. Many items in the exhibit are on loan from the Apartheid Museum in South Africa, which I visited with Carolyn Mazloomi’s guild in 2014, traveling with quilters who participated in the quilt exhibit for the 20th Anniversary of the end of Apartheid. I saw one of these quilts in Houston this year – a visual message of hope by Barbara Ann McCraw.

Those searing images from Apartheid stayed with me for a long time, and I recommend if you are in Winnipeg soon, go see this Mandela exhibit and the Human Rights museum. (You can see photos on my personal Facebook page and my photo pages.)

Today we are flying up to Churchill to start our polar bear tour. The high today will be 3 degrees Fahrenheit…not including wind chill. I am taking a new rotary cutter to my quilter friend who lives there, and works at the Research Station. Everywhere I go in the world, there are quilters.

Creative Nudge – Houston Quilt Festival

I am sending you a quick newsletter from Quilt Festival in Houston, after an exciting evening at the Awards Ceremony.

Sherry Reynolds won the top prize tonight with her amazing pieced quilt “Eternal Beauty”.

eQuilter sponsored the new Animal Kingdom category. Sophie and I were pleased to give the 1st prize to Esther Tronchoni Simo from Spain, for her quilt “Jewel Beetle”.

Here is an animal-themed quilt that I love from the exhibit, by Natalie Mosher. It is called “Two Socks” and is made with Aboriginal prints from Australia. (Image above is set in a collage with some of our current Australian fabrics.)

Congratulations to all the winners, and to all the quilters whose work was juried into this year’s exhibit here in Houston!

If you are coming to the show, be sure to check out eQuilter’s exhibit “Love Your Mother” which features quilts made from our digital panel of Mother Earth. It is on Main Street (the main aisle through the exhibit area) about halfway down on the back side. You’ll see our rainbow logo on this exhibit, and the Animal Kingdom category.
