Creative Nudge – Dragon Magic

Humans have had a fascination with Dragons for Millennia, and these stories come from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. A dragon-like creature even appeared in Mesopotamian artwork from around 2200 BC. They appear in ancient Norse, Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, Japanese, and Vedic mythology. Where did we get these worldwide myths and legends about these winged serpentine beasts?

It seems like every 5 to 10 years there is a revival of Dragon films or TV shows, and our fascination (or memory?) with these giant lizards comes roaring back. Sometimes these dragons are anthropomorphic and we have great sympathy for their misunderstood plight. Jason and St George each slayed a dragon. In the Hobbit and Beawulf something is stolen from a dragon’s hoard. Dragons often appear in stories of treasure and magic.

Dragons live on in China today…just go to a Dragon Boat Race or a New Years Dragon Dance…where the Dragon represents Good Fortune and Longevity. Dragon energy is used by shamans and healers, and Stonehenge was thought to be a resting place for Dragons. Today we see Dragons in Game of Thrones, Harry Potter…and Dungeons & Dragons on Big Bang Theory.

There are those who believe that dragons did exist in the past, and these ubiquitous stories point to an ancient history when dragons roamed the lands. What do you think?

Today is the last day of my 50s. Having a quiet day….thinking about what I will do in the next decade. I am so grateful to have found the wonderful world of Quilting and to have so many incredibly talented, loving and fierce friends over the last 20 years in this industry. I started meeting quilters after I moved back to Colorado in 1990, and I knew I had found my home, after leaving the garment industry in NYC. Then I met Paul, my genius partner, and the rest is history.

As I move into a new decade (60s), with our 20th eQuilter anniversary on the horizon, I am honored to know so many noble hearts who share our desire to make the world a better place…for everyone. Love to you all…..

Creative Nudge – A Dog’s Life

Here is a new video clip from Quilting Arts TV, with my review of the Quilt Canada exhibits this summer! Check out the beautiful quilts that Canadian quilters are making, expressing their native culture, landscapes and wildlife.

Two days ago I was out in negative 42 degree windchill in Churchill Manitoba, photographing sled dogs! It was so cold that my fingers and toes froze painfully after just a few minutes despite my layers, so I would take a few photos and then run back in the Warming Hut to stave off frostbite.

I saw more foxes and dogs, than polar bears on this trip, because of the ice freezing up and the bears had mostly gone off across the ice to hunt and feed. Nevertheless we did have a magical time with a mother bear and her young cub, as they cautiously made their way towards the frozen bay.

There’s a story that goes with this photo. The dogs go crazy howling and barking after they are hooked up to the sled, until they are allowed to take off running. The two lead dogs on this team are two opposite personalities. The Malamute gray dog is howling and loudly grumbling, while his teammate has a look of pained tolerance to his noisy vocalizations.

The mushers put booties on the dogs before they took off, and the dogs would hold out their paws for their insulated footwear. These special dogs have an extremely high metabolism so they love running in the cold. You’ve heard of the Ididarod race? These sled dog rides for tourists are called the Ididamile. Haha.

The supply train has not run to Churchill since the rail flooded out in May 2017, and the cost of food for sled dogs (and everyone else!) has skyrocketed. Melting permafrost means that the rails sit on squishy boggy land, but the rail has been sold, and the mushers are hanging on, hoping that supplies will be rolling again soon on solid frozen land.

Quilting supplies are hard to come by there also, so I brought some fabric and magazines to a quilter friend who works in Churchill as a research scientist. The indigenous people used precious needles crafted from ivory, before traders brought them metal needles. We tend to take our notions for granted, unless we live on the furthest edges of civilization!

Hello from Churchill

This week I am up in Northern Manitoba to photograph polar bears and other arctic wildlife. It has been super cold which means Hudson Bay has frozen and most of the bears are out on the ice feeding, after their long summer fast. We had a nice close encounter with a mother bear and cub, and also with an Arctic Fox and a Crossfox. (A Silvery Red Fox.) Right now it is -9 F, -18 F with windchill. The cold temps mean the skies are clear so we are hoping to see some Northern Lights tonight.

I have had time to reflect on the quilts on display in Houston this year. First of all I want to thank all the artists who made quilts for our Love Your Mother challenge. 17 of these were juried into the exhibit, and 6 received prizes, including a BERNINA 570 QE, an Eversewn machine from Brewer Sewing and Quilting Supplies, and eQuilter gift certificates. Thank you to our co-sponsors! …and congratulations to the top prize winner Elizabeth Budd. The exhibit will travel and we are working on these future venues. We will let you know the schedule!

eQuilter sponsored a new IQA category this year – the Animal Kingdom. I am so excited about this new category, and I want to encourage all you amazing quilters to consider making an Animal-themed quilt for next year. This can include birds, fish, insects, tigers, elephants, cats, dogs and horses. Knowing how quilters love animals, I think this should be the biggest category. Or should I say… CATegory?

eQuilter sponsors the Modern Quilt category at Quilt Canada, and this summer the winning quilt was a red and white quilt about the indigenous women here who are missing…inspired by the Red Dress Project on the same topic. At the Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg there was a Red Dress exhibit. Last night we had a lecture by a Cree Elder, talking about her childhood and all of her siblings being separated and sent to residential schools. I am grateful that we can make art to bring awareness to these topics about women.

We have a close family friend who has lost their house in the California Fires, and when I get back I will see if there is interest in organizing a comfort quilt drive. Right now those affected have more urgent basic needs, so please donate to trusted organizations that are on the ground involved in the rescue operations.

Free Pattern – Cat-i-tude Purr-fect Together

This week’s Free Exclusive Quilt Pattern features the ever-popular Paisley Cats from Benartex. These adorable prints now include pairs of nuzzling kitties and more fabulous paisley coordinates.

Our colorful Free Quilt Design combines frames from three exquisitely detailed kitty panels, then uses the coordinating paisley stripe to piece the quilt. The opulent paisley theme is richly embellished with gold metallic, giving this Kitty quilt the Royal treatment.

The 74″ x 74″ quilt design makes a fantastic wall hanging for a Sun Room (maybe where your cat likes to sleep in the sun) or makes a beautiful quilt for a young person who likes to cuddle up with their cats.

… from the ‘Cat-i-tude’ collection by Ann Lauer for Benartex.

And don’t miss the wonderful ‘Kitty Glitter‘ and ‘Color Intensity‘ quilt patterns.
