Fantastic Fusion Workshop

We are so excited to have Lisa Walton coming here to Boulder, to kick off our eQuilter workshop program. She is a true international quilting celebrity (as you will see in her bio) and we’ve developed a friendship over the years because whenever I travel overseas to a show, there she is! She is witty and prolific – a true inspiration to her workshop attendees.

Lisa is an ongoing guest on Quilting Arts TV on PBS, and her recent ‘Fantastic Fusion’ segment has attracted much enthusiastic praise…hence my invitation for her to come teach this technique!

Lisa is being installed as the new president of SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) at their April conference in San Antonio, and she will be the first non-US (Australian) president of this international organization for quilt artists. Then she is flying to Colorado to teach for us! Yay!

I will be co-hosting this weekend event, and we’ll be celebrating the joy of creativity in
Lisa’s Fantastic Fusion class…an inventive process that frees you from ‘rules’ to let the inner artist come out to play. Read all about it…and Sign up today!

We are so sad to hear about the loss of our industry friend Tim Reed, who recently retired from EE Schenck. Our deepest condolences go out to Tim’s family and his co-workers. I have know Tim since his Daisy Kingdom days, and met him at my first Market in 1999. He will be missed.

Our Charity Sewing Day is next Saturday from 9 to 4. Please DO RSVP in advance, especially if you wish to be provided with a Bernina machine to sew on that day. (Thanks to Blakeman Sewing)

Creative Nudge – Cherry Blossoms & Bubbles

Having just returned from the Tokyo Quilt Festival, I am just starting to go through all my photos of the beautiful quilts. As I mentioned in the Saturday night newsletter, there is more machine quilting and also an indirect Modern influence showing up at this show…but we still love to see the meticulously detailed handwork of traditional Japanese quilters. It is fascinating to see how old and new are being combined in the Japanese quilts…traditional elements given a modern or contemporary twist…machine stitching where hand-stitching might have been used in the past.

One of the most lovely artistic expressions there, is the love for Japanese art and culture, that is expressed through traditional motifs like cherry blossoms. This was one of my favorite traditional quilts, but you can see it has been given a contemporary twist. This is what I love about quilting …that we have an infinite range of possibilities when it comes to mixing up old and new, brights and neutrals, Western and Eastern influences, etc.

I have just started to upload some photos from Tokyo on my photo page – check back later this week for more quilts! You may recall that I am adamant about showing the name of the quiltmaker along with the quilt image, and often at the Tokyo show I have to paste in the image of the quiltmaker’s name in Japanese Kanji. I am working on that this week! I will post overall show photos without names, but individual quilts will have the name on the image. I hope that others who have visited the show will do the same, so the quiltmakers get credit for their work.

I ran into Lisa Walton at the Tokyo Quiltfest, and we had fun discussing the workshop she will be teaching at eQuilter April 14-15. If you want to learn how to design and make quilts using fusible applique, come and join us for a celebration of creativity with Lisa!

Registration is now open for the Color Marketing Group’s Chromazone which we are hosting in May – for designers, art directors and artists to experience a color forecasting collaboration with color peers.

Now is the time to make a deposit if you want to save your seat on the Polar Rover with me in November, for the Polar Bear Tour. This trip always sells out in advance, but payment plans are available!

Hello from Tokyo

Today I am flying home from the Tokyo Quilt Festival, where I’ve been photographing the quilt exhibits and meeting with Japanese quilters. It snowed right before I arrived, and it has been very cold here!

There is a huge shift going on with Japanese quilting, and it is going to change the way we see Japanese quilts in the next 5 years. More and more quilters here are switching from hand-quilting to machine-quilting, as the masters of hand-stitching are aging…and new quilters are stitching on machines.

The influence of Modern Quilting is seen here, and it is trying to find a category…and not quite fitting into existing categories. In particular I see a shakeup in the Traditional and WA categories, compared to previous years.

There are a lot of Chinese quilters walking the aisles and admiring the quilt exhibits. The quilt movement is very new in China, and it is relatively easy for them to travel to the Tokyo Quiltfest and be dazzled by the Japanese quilt movement which has grown into mastery over the last 30 years. It is exciting to think about what might develop in China in the next 10 years…with their long traditions of textile arts…just as it is exciting to see how Japanese quilters are now translating their quilting skills into a new kind of creativity with sewing machines.

Yesterday I went to the Tokyo Opera to see Die Fledermaus (Strauss), one of my favorites. It was great to see the Japanese and European singers together on stage, wearing costumes in the party scene that were inspired by the artwork of Klimt. Before the opera begins, they announce that if there is an earthquake, everyone should stay in their seats. Hmmm.

There is still time to make a quilt for our Love Your Mother quilt challenge and contest, with a BERNINA machine as First Prize, and a juried exhibit in Houston this Fall! We hope you will join the Challenge! (Deadline May 15.)

Creative Nudge – Crazy Mandalas

One of the reasons I love taking my camera to quilt shows, is so I can share with you some of the mind-blowing talent that is out there making quilts every day. This is why I love introducing non-quilting artist friends to our world of quilting…when they go to a quilt show for the first time they are speechless!

One of the design trends we’ve been seeing with continued growth, is Mandalas. You could say that this has become popular because of the Zentangle and Coloring Book fads, but it goes deeper than that. There are all kinds of influences that bring an art/design trend like this to the forefront. This would include the popularity of Yoga and Meditation, as tools to cope with the stress of our busy world.

The quilt image at the center of this fabric collage, is a detail of a quilt by Teri Cherne, which I photographed at the Road to California show over the weekend. The level of mastery in the stitching is set off by the sweeping overall movement of the Mandala design, and the whimsy of the applique circles. “When My Spirit is Set Free” uses metallic threads, hand couching, bobbin work and trapunto to tell the story.

This is just part of the quilt, but you can go to my photo pages to see the overall quilt design.

I am flying to Tokyo today, to photograph the Quilt Festival. I’ll be hand-carrying the show books back home again, as I have in past years.

Registration is now open for the Color Marketing Group’s Chromazone which we are hosting in May – for designers, art directors and artists to experience a color forecasting collaboration with color peers.

Check out the dates below – and I hope you’ll join us for one of our events in the near future!

Hello from California

Today I am writing to you from Ontario California, at the Road to California quilt show. This morning I had a meeting with Carolyn Reese who has been running the show since 1996, and her grandson Matt who has purchased the business and is now running the next generation of the family business. Carolyn shared many stories about how the show got started, and how it has grown over the years. We are excited to be a new sponsor of this busy show.

I have been taking photos of the quilt exhibits, enjoying seeing beautiful quilts again that were in Houston, Birmingham or Tokyo in the last year. But also there are many new quilts I have never seen at any other shows, that are absolutely stunning!

You may notice when you go to quilt show or any art exhibit that the pieces can look totally different at different times, because of the lighting. Some are in spaces with some natural light, so there can be areas of bright light or shadow that move across the exhibit depending on the time of day. You may take a photo of a quilt in the morning, and return later to find that the afternoon lighting makes a photo better or worse. This is why I always return to my favorite quilts twice in the same day, to see which photo with which lighting will show the quilt to its best. Every time I see the same quilt in a new venue, it is like seeing it for the first time.

It is fun to visit the HerStory exhibit here, (along the back wall of the Ballroom) and see how it looks in a different setting with different lighting. Some of you may be at the quilt show in Florida this weekend, and you may see my 2 astronaut portraits in the Fly Me To The Moon exhibit there.

Now is the time to sign up for Lisa Walton’s “Fantastic Fusion” class to guarantee your space! You can now sign up on the eQuilter site, and you can even put some fabric in the shopping cart with Lisa! *smile* Contact us if you are coming from out of state, so we can point you towards the hotel which is one block away from our building.

There is still time to make a quilt for our Love Your Mother quilt challenge and contest, with a BERNINA machine as First Prize, and a juried exhibit in Houston this Fall! We hope you will join the Challenge!
