Creative Nudge – Passion to Create

Over the last 3 days I’ve been at a creative arts retreat, and one of the things I heard many artists say is that they did not feel they had permission to be an artist as a child and/or adult. I must be very lucky because I had a very different experience as a child. In fact there were several mentors in my youth, who inspired me and gave me permission to explore my creative interests in art and music.

In high school one of the profound moments of inspiration, was when I went to Europe as a summer exchange student. On the way to Germany, we stopped for 2 days in Amsterdam. Somehow at the age of 15 I managed to pick the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum for my day trip. I saw the Nightwatch 2 months before a deranged man slashed the painting. The end of the day I rushed through the Van Gogh Museum because it was closing early. As I quickly ran to see the masterpieces, I was in tears because I had so little time. Since then I have sought out Van Gogh‘s paintings in other museums around the world.

About that time I was reading lots of biographies of artists. I devoured The Agony and the Ecstasy, Lust for Life, and Renoir My Father. I felt such a deep connection to these stories about the artists’ passion for Life and Making Art. Later in life I visited Giverny – where Monet created his Lily Ponds and the flower garden outside his studio. I visited Arles and the Mental Hospital where Van Gogh stayed….and the famous Night Cafe. (The bedroom scene above is from Arles.)

It was very emotional for me when I finally saw the Sistine Chapel, the David, and the Pieta in Italy. When you sit in contemplation at a great Masterwork, instead of rushing in to take a selfie and leaving 5 minutes later, you can have a very deep esoteric experience of connecting with the artist. I try to practice this deep appreciation of art whenever I can, because the longer you spend looking at a Masterwork, the more its secrets are revealed. This certainly holds true with the masterpieces of quilt artistry that we see at quilt festivals! I always come back to the 2 or 3 quilts that really moved me, to give a long appreciation for the work of the quilt artist.

I’ve put together a collage of (framed) paintings from the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York, with current digital printed fabric reproductions of Van Gogh and Monet paintings. The blenders for these collections are just beautiful – showing every brushstroke by the artists.

In case you missed Saturday’s newsletter, we are planning 2 sewing days to make comfort quilts for disaster relief – on Saturdays Oct 14 & 21. Please read about the details here.

Friends in New Zealand – I will be attending the WOW show in Wellington Oct 5, and will be giving my lecture at the Symposium in Christchurch on Oct 7. Hope to see you there – tickets to the lecture are limited!

Free Pattern – Autumn Blaze

It’s snowing here in the Colorado mountains, and we are in the mood for some cooler Fall weather!

This week’s Free Quilt Pattern celebrates the changing of the seasons, with majestic Elk and colorful Autumn foliage.

You’ll love the details on the panel, and the colors of the scenic allover print. Add in coordinating foliage blenders for a striking 63″ x 67″ quilt – with bright Flying Geese triangles set in a black frame.

The forest scenic border ties it all together for a small bed quilt, or a North Woods wallhanging. Back this quilt with Flannel for the coziest lap quilt!

Sewing Days Oct 14 & 21 for Disaster Relief

*
Yesterday was the official first day of Autumn – the Fall Equinox. Our local weather obliged with a drop in temperature, and we are having a cool rainy weekend. Even though the kids have been back to school for awhile, the changing of the seasons is a welcome relief from the heat, a signal that the harvest has begun, and a turning to indoor activities….like sewing and quilting!

As I am sure you are well aware, there have been multiple recent disasters and those of us not affected by the storms, fires and earthquakes, are trying to keep up with relief efforts…and what is the best way to help.

We would like to open up our classroom to groups or individuals who would like to get together to sew comfort quilts, to be delivered by Mission of Love to those most affected by these recent events. WE WILL PROVIDE THE FABRIC! If you live locally or if you are visiting, and you’d like to set up a single day or repeating sewing day please give us a call or email Customer Service.

If your group would like to schedule a sewing day, we have a local BERNINA dealer who will provide machines. You can of course bring in your own machine as well. We can schedule sewing times during the work week, AND special sewing days on a couple Saturdays in October – on 10/14 and 10/21 – but please call us and RSVP so we know we have enough people to open up on the weekend.

For now lets put out a call for 2 Sewing Days –
Saturday Oct 14 & 21 – 9 am to 4 pm.
Call to RSVP with your contact information.
Please let your Colorado quilting guilds know and pass it on!

Please send us your ideas and lets make some quilts for those in need!

If you are unable to join us but would still like to donate a comfort quilt, I will be announcing our plans for collection and distribution in the near future. In the past we had quilters drop them off in person at eQuilter, or ship them directly to Mission of Love. Because of multiple disasters we are still making our plans, but if you want to donate quilts, I promise we will make sure they are personally distributed to those most in need.

eQuilter and Mission of Love have worked together, to distribute over 12,000 donated quilts for disaster relief, orphans, hospital patients, and indigenous people in poverty. You can see photo albums of these projects on my photo pages – https://www.flickr.com/photos/luanarubin/albums

Thank you for considering being a part of our relief effort!

BERNINA has generously donated a new model machine as first prize for the
‘Love Your Mother’ Quilt Challenge, and now Brewer has donated an EverSewn Sparrow 25 machine for the 2nd prize!

To participate in this challenge you must use 1 of the 3 versions of the challenge panel:

Free Pattern – Alaskan Wildlife

Journey to the top of the world with this week’s Free Quilt Pattern, featuring the painterly illustrations of an Alaskan artist, with themes that will also be familiar to those who have been to the Northern Territories of Canada. This digital print is so detailed, you can see the brush strokes of the original artwork!

Sled Dogs, Grizzly Bear & Moose, Wolves, a Bald Eagle, Northern Lights, a cozy log cabin and a snow-covered peak give this central panel an Arctic ambiance.

We’ve added Hoffman Hand-Dyes to create the pieced border, inset with Sled Dog vignettes. If you back this 48″ x 68″ quilt with flannel and use a wool batting, it will make a fantastic lap quilt for those chilly evenings in front of the fire…or use freemotion quilting in matching threads to bring those details to life, for a gorgeous wallhanging.

Creative Nudge – Wild and Free

Last night I returned from New York City, and in reviewing my photos I found I took a lot of pictures of horses! One of the photos is of the massive painting by Rosa Bonheur – “The Horse Fair” – in the Metropolitan Art Museum. A much smaller replica of this hung over our couch when I was a little girl.

The first time I saw this epic painting in person, I was speechless….and breathless! Rosa had to dress like a man to attend the Paris Horse Market to make her sketches for this masterpiece.

In New York it is always a shock to see horses on those hard city streets. The police horses are well cared for…the carriage horses not so much. Tourists flock to the horses to pet them and have selfies taken with the animals.

We know that many of you are Horse Nuts (like me!) because we see all the Horse fabrics that you buy! Is there anything as beautiful as a horse galloping free? Is there anything that smells better than a horse? I think not!

I had a horse as a teenager, and all of our kids have had riding lessons because it’s in our blood. My mom used to ride her horse bareback to school from her family’s farm in Molalla Oregon. I rode my Quarter Horse Paint in the 4-H Barrel Racing at the County Fair.

Last week we watched scenes of horses, dogs and cats being rescued from the floods, and saw people risk their lives to save their beloved horses and pets. For some, their animals are their family. Every life saved is precious.

Weekend in The Big Apple

For our friends in Florida, we hope you are getting your power and water turned on soon. We know several folks affected by the hurricane, and have been in touch with those who had generators. Those who had little or no damage, are out helping their neighbors. I rode out a typhoon (Asian hurricane) with 125 mph winds in 1983 so I have intense empathy for all of you affected by Harvey and Irma!

Tonight I am writing to you from New York City, where I spent the day at ‘Quilters Take Manhattan’ at FIT, in my old stomping grounds – the garment district. One of the highlights was Carolyn Mazloomi interviewing Michael Cummings about his work, for a ‘Go Tell It’ recording that will go to the Library of Congress. (You may recall I did a similar recording for Quilt Alliance, interviewing Jinny Beyer a few years ago.) Several of his quilts were on display and it was fascinating to hear about his evolution as a quilter.

Last night I saw the Broadway musical ‘War Paint’ about Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden, played by Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole. I highly recommend this show. The costumes and jewelry were fab, and the divas were divine. There was a lot of focus on Color, especially Arden’s trademark Pink!

Thursday I was at the Quilting Arts TV studio, taping 2 segments for next season, with host Susan Brubaker Knapp. We’ll be sure to let you know when those video clips are posted on our video page. I was invited to speak on a couple topics, as a Color and Design expert. What fun!

For now, you can see my 2 recent segments from another PBS show – Fresh Quilting – recently uploaded to our video pages. One is about the value of traveling abroad to international quilt festivals, and the other is about Japanese Quilting and the Tokyo Quilt Festival.

Our oldest son Mason has a new-ish job for a music nonprofit, and his work took him to NYC this weekend too! So lucky me, I get to meet him for dinner here on Sunday. He was born in NYC so that is kind of special.

Your exclusive eQuilter Free Pattern combines the gorgeous ‘Fantasy Forest’ collection together with ‘Fantasia’ by artist Chong-A Hwang.

This Dazzling 60″ x 55″ wallhanging invites you to walk through the garden gate, to swirling branches and multicolor florals of the exquisite Tree of Life. Painterly textures give this a bold impressionist quality, with dynamic complementary colors.

Creative Nudge – Teddy Bear Hugs

I had a teddy bear when I was a kid. I bet you did too. When I was scared, I would hide under the covers and clench my bear tightly…and I would feel safe.

Last week I spoke about our disaster relief for Texas. Several days ago Mission of Love and Mayor Tim Kern used our initial flood relief donation to deliver a truck full of supplies to a remote Texas coastal city of Port Aransas that had received no aid whatsoever. That is just the first step.

Now we have the additional, incomprehensible destruction of Irma. In addition, there are fires all over the Western States, which are barely being reported. We see you.

We are going to organize a quilt drive for disaster relief, and the effort will go on for a long time. So go ahead and get started on those comfort quilts. We suggest lap quilts, crib quilts, twin and double quilts, and some queen size quilts. While you work on the quilts, we’ll work on the distribution network with Mission of Love. Many of our vendors are donating money and starting relief projects, so we’ll keep you updated on all of that.

10 days ago I visited the Wild Animal Sanctuary, and this is one of my favorite photos. It is a young Sun Bear taking a dip in the pool, enjoying life. I can’t send you all a teddy bear, so I’ll send you this collage of a bear photo, and bear fabrics. I hope it makes you smile. All of us know someone affected by the hurricanes, floods and fires. We are all thinking about how we can help.

In the meantime I am sending special teddy bear hugs to those of you affected by these events, and we hope you are finding safety, comfort and peace in the next few days.
