European Trends

Our youngest child Sophie started high school (9th grade) on Thursday, and Sam starts his sophomore year in college on Monday. Those of you who have followed our family’s story over the years, will feel the same sense of shock that I do! Sophie is practicing her violin, preparing to audition for a seat in orchestra, and Sam just auditioned for placement in a band. He’s been practicing his sax for 6 hours a day. Maybe some day we can invite you to one of his concerts, as he is a performance major.

My double-header trip last week was pretty exhausting, so I am resting this weekend. I am going over all the photos I took at the Festival of Quilts, and listening to Puccini opera music while I catch up on correspondence. It was also very interesting to talk to quilters in England, and fellow opera-lovers in Italy, about Brexit, and the refugee crisis. We know that at least one of our charity recipients – Doctors Without Borders – is helping those affected by the upheaval in Syria.

Next week in my midweek Creative Nudge newsletter, I’ll be talking about trends (!) emerging from the Birmingham exhibits, from quilters around Europe. Right now I’m editing and sorting through a couple thousand photos, so I can post images of the quilts that are pointing toward new trends, or setting extraordinary benchmarks of design and technique. I love seeing how creativity evolves through the filters of different cultural traditions and aesthetics.

In Europe and the UK, there seems to be a lot less concern for that old squabble about “What is a quilt?”, than there is in the US. I find the continuing exploration of fiber art to be refreshing for the most part (although some of it is a head-scratcher at times) and I appreciate that a show called the Festival of Quilts is so open to these creative explorations that obviously go way beyond the current definition of a Quilt.

I also really appreciate that a sizable chunk of their exhibit space is dedicated to different categories of Junior Quilters…cultivating the quilters and textile artists of tomorrow! The Tokyo Quilt Festival also has a prominent section for Junior Quilters, and we can only hope that more quilt festivals in the US will welcome entries by kids and teenagers.

SAQA’s “Celebrating Silver” exhibit was in Birmingham, and got a fantastic response from what I heard. Congratulations to all of you with a quilt in this beautiful collection.

Our heart goes out to those in Louisiana affected by the floods. If anyone is coordinating a comfort quilt project for flood victims, let me know and I will share the information.

Creative Nudge – Africa Rising

African

Last night I arrived home, after spending the weekend at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. This is the biggest quilt festival in Europe and it is great to see all the European and UK flavors of creativity as I walk the show. I am still pondering all the quilts I photographed at the show, and thinking about the trends I saw emerging.

One of the things that struck me was how many quilts there were with African themes and African fabrics. One quilter wrote about her quilt – “Africa – Our Future”. Despite all the refugee problems emanating from Northern Africa, there is still a recognition that the continent is a huge untapped resource.

There was also a lot of attention on issues such as animals going extinct, and climate change. Some quilts were very subtle and some were very blatant and direct in their message.

This bold quilt by Ingrid Agering “African Star” uses a traditional quilt design with bold African prints in the pieced star….and a graphic circle of elephant silhouettes. There was a lot of intricate quilting in the white background. It drew a lot of attention and admiration from the festival attendees, and was placed in a visible location.

We have always carried African import prints, African animal fabrics, and African batiks/panels. Since my visit to South Africa for the 20th anniversary of Apartheid ending (with Carolyn Mazloomi’s quilt group, to see their Nelson Mandela quilt exhibit there) I’ve had an even greater appreciation for the colors and traditional fabrics coming from this vast continent.

Next week in my Midweek Creative Nudge, I’ll be posting quilt photos and talking about other trends from the show. Kudos to Ingrid for this bold beautiful quilt!

The quilt is shown in a collage of Elephant and African-themed fabrics now in stock at eQuilter.com

Mesmerized by the Maestro

I am writing to you this weekend as I am in transit to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. I spent a few days in Lucca Italy while attending the Puccini Opera Festival (checking out the costumes for Turandot – wow!) …using my United points that I’ve been accumulating all year.

The Puccini Opera Festival is actually in Torre Del Lago, and Puccini’s house is next to the outdoor opera venue. Puccini’s granddaughter Simonetta is now in her 80’s and is in charge of the house museum. We met her as we entered the property, and saw her again at the operas at night… always in the front row we were told.

I had a magical moment as I toured the house, in the room with his piano. He composed in his living room, which was densely decorated with murals, mosaics, and other decorations from his group of artistic friends. Art Nouveau styling gave this room an elegant feel, despite the fact that the room was rather busy. It was dense and lush with gorgeous details, and I imagined the maestro at his piano, composing one of his fabulously romantic operas.

The young tenor tonight got a huge ovation for his aria Nessun Dorma in Turandot. You’ve probably heard the Pavarotti version. The crowd loved him so much that he sang the whole aria again! I have never seen that at an opera. The orchestra and chorus all joined in and they all played the aria as an encore in the middle of the opera! We met his agent from Paris we reckon he is destined for stardom.

The opera festival is outdoors so we were watching for Perseid Meteors above the stage, with the lake in the background, and the lights twinkling from the opposite shore. Absolutely magical, to go with the fantasy/nouveau Chinese costumes and set.

Earlier today I was drooling over the historic textiles at the Mansi Palazzo. I’ll share photos when I get home. They were wealthy silk merchants and their palazzo was dripping with silk jacquards, embroideries, and tapestries. Yummy!

I’ll have Puccini tunes in my head when I get home and start to work in the studio next week. What do you like to listen to when you are working?

Sunday I will be in the VIP lounge at the Birmingham show – we are the sponsors for the lounge so I hope to see many of you there!

Creative Nudge – Opera Festival

Puccini

Tonight I am writing to you from Lucca Italy where I’ve joined a group of opera buffs for the Puccini Opera Festival. I am on my way to the Birmingham UK Festival of Quilts, but I am taking a little operatic side trip with my accumulated United miles!

As we arrived this afternoon, this is what I saw at the front entrance to the old walled city, and I thought it was such a great image capturing the essence of this historic place. Cars are not allowed inside the old walls, but there is lots of opera because this area is where Puccini lived and worked. (Madame Butterfly, Tosca, La Boheme, etc.) Everywhere you go here there are lots of bicycles, and lots of reference to classical music and Puccini’s operas. So I’ve put together this little collage of my photo, and eQuilter fabrics.

Instead of being with quilters, I with a music professor from Cardiff Wales, and opera fans who usher at their local opera performances. The conversations run very parallel to quilters’ conversations, but just insert “Opera” and “Puccini” instead of “Quilts” and “Fabric”. I get lots of inspiration when hanging out with creative people who have a different artistic passion.

Attending live performances always sets my creative brain buzzing, and often I get my best ideas during an opera, orchestra concert, or ballet. Local university music programs can be a great source of affordable tickets. Try it sometime!

Making and Breaking Rules

This week I am writing to you from the Quilt House – the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln Nebraska. Sophie and I drove 8 hours yesterday so we could be here today for a panel discussion about Chinese Quilts and 100 Good Wishes China Adoption Quilts. Thanks to everyone who came out for the event!

This event coincides with the current exhibit – Quilts of Southwest China. After the panel, we got a private behind-the-scenes tour of the museum, with curator Marin Hanson. Then we went into the China Quilt exhibit and shot a video with Marin. So you will see more of these quilts soon on our video page, but I also encourage you to try to see this traveling exhibit here before it closes September 28.

In the exhibit space, there is a video showing how one of the quilts was made. It is an interview with the quiltmaker, a minority Chinese woman, and it shows closeup shots of her applique process. We joke about “breaking the rules” when we sew and embellish our quilts, but really what we are doing often is simply to come up with a more creative and/or efficient way to do a particular technique. In this video, the quiltmaker uses not fusible, not glue, but sticky rice to adhere the applique piece to the background fabric. Now tell me, is she following the rules, or breaking the rules, by using sticky rice?!? And the best part is, she is sewing these applique blocks while wearing a gorgeous heavily embroidered apron – her “work” apron I guess. Gotta love it!

One of the ongoing discussions among quiltmakers is Following the Rules (Quilt Police) vs. Breaking the Rules. How many creative fiber artists have been chastised for breaking the “rules”, only to be celebrated years later for having a genius level of creativity? I tend to hang with the rule-breakers, because that’s where the next generation of creative geniuses are brewing up stitched epiphanies. Rules are handy for judging contests, for sure, but they have a potential to stifle inventive techniques that are bubbling away on kitchen tables and home studios around the world.

During our behind-the-scenes tour here in Lincoln, we got a sneak peek at an exhibit that is traveling to the Tokyo Quilt Festival next January. I just love the international cross-pollination that occurs when we send our quilts back and forth across the oceans. As much as we are dazzled by the Japanese quilts, they love seeing our quilt collections too!

Next weekend I will be at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham England – hope to see many of you there! (We are sponsoring the VIP lounge, where you can find me next Sunday.)

Creative Nudge – Spanish Horses

Nudge

Last week I came back from Andalusia, and one of my favorite day trips was a visit to a farm near Jerez. This is the area where they make sherry wine, raise the famous Spanish bulls, and it is also where Andalusian Horses are bred and trained.

I have had a crush on this breed since I was a kid. When I went to see the Lippizaner horses as a girl, when I had my own horse as a teenager, when I visited the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, when I toured the Queen’s stables (Royal Mews) with her Windsor Greys near Buckingham Palace in London, admired Gandalf’s steed Shadowfax in Lord of the Rings, and now I had the chance to see these iconic horses in their native land.

Here is a collage of photos from this farm, including a gorgeous Grand Champion in the top left, and in the middle that is me about to get a velvety kiss from a curious boy. I’ve added in a few of our current horse-themed fabrics.

This Saturday at 10:30 am I’ll be speaking on a panel, moderated by Curator Marin Hanson, about Chinese 100 Good Wishes Quilts at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln Nebraska. Sophie will be with me, and we’ll be sharing her adoption quilts.

Sunday Aug 14 I’ll be hosting the VIP lounge at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. I am still looking for a ride from the Manchester Airport to the Hilton Birmingham on Saturday afternoon Aug 13, in case anyone can give me a lift!

I hope to see many of you in Lincoln or Birmingham! Please come and say hello – I love to meet our eQuilter friends and customers at these events!
