To make this epic 71″ x 78″ quilt design, you will start with the 36″ x 44″ castle panel with 4 large scenic blocks. Then cut up the 36″ x 44″ Wizards & Warriors panel with character blocks, to make the vertical and horizontal rows. Kona Black Solid is cut and pieced as a sashing for all these large and small blocks, to make the central section. The coordinating stripe with castles, shields & swords is used for the border. More Solid Black, plus a Hoffman Hand-Dye, are used to finish the border and binding.

We are zooming into February which is a short month with a sweet holiday in the middle – Valentine’s Day is on the horizon!
It is also Black History month, and I am highlighting 2 books in stock by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi: And Still We Rise: Race, Culture, and Visual Conversations Visioning Human Rights in the New Millennium
We have a TON of new blenders this week – it is a good time to check out our New Color Palette category. (which is updated every week!)
Please note also that our 40″ wide Evolon (sold by the yard) is back in stock. We also carry sample packs, and 80″ wide. If you follow my artwork, my last few pieces have had painted Evolon tops! (with applique and then stitching on top of the painted Evolon.)
I am also using Gentle Fuse to cut detailed shapes on batiks and other fabrics, with my Silhouette Cameo digital cutting machine, and 54″ Mistyfuse for my larger art quilts. (For those of you who have been asking.)
In case you missed it – check out “Just Wanna Copyright – For Makers” by Elizabeth Townsend. The corresponding exhibit just opened at the New England Quilt Museum.
There has been much discussion about the SAQA Red exhibit this last week. If you are curious, we still have this exhibit catalog in stock here.
We are still collecting comfort quilts for those who lost their homes during Hurricane Helene in NC. You can either drop donations off *in person* at our office, or ship directly to this NEW address for distribution:

For most of us, cats are never-ending source of comfort and amusement. Many of you have found your way to my “Fabriholic Kitty Club” on Facebook, despite the zillions of other cat-themed pages. Our friend Doug from Kona Bay Fabrics advised me, our first year of business – “Cats outsell dogs 3-to-1” – haha and he was right! In our house we don’t have to decide whether we like cats or dogs better, because we have 2 dogs, and 3 rescue cats. Our daughter Sophie Quinn adopted a 5 yr old calico tortie several months ago, and she texts me cute photos of her furry friend, in the middle of the night. And I don’t mind! So for those of you fellow ailurophiles (cat lovers) I thought I should feature this embarrassment of feline riches in our warehouse right now.
I love spotting wildlife in our suburban rural neighborhood, and in our Rocky Mountains. I travel one mile from our house, past Celestial Seasonings tea factory, to our warehouse. About once a week I have some kind of wildlife sighting, like a fox, raccoon, or hawk. A week ago a pair of Bald Eagles flew right over my car! Today I had a little bunny next to my car. We’ve had a pair of Blue Jays in our back yard this week also. Occasionally we’ll have a bear or bobcat wander through. A little closer to the foothills our neighbors see plenty of deer, and the rare wandering mountain lion. We feel so fortunate to live in a place where our lives sometimes overlap with the wild creatures around us.
Speaking of snakes…
As I write this, it is Chinese New Year’s Eve….Jan 29 is the start of the Lunar New Year. It is the year of the Snake. When I lived in Hong Kong there were elaborate parties and fireworks, and we shouted “Gung Hei Fat Choi” as we skipped through the celebrations out on the streets. Later we experienced the Lunar Year in Honolulu’s Chinatown, when visiting Paul’s family there. And of course when Sophie Quinn was small and taking Mandarin lessons, we would book a table at the local Chinese restaurant for the New Year Lion Dance or Dragon Dance. The giant Lion puppet would bob up and down, with 3 or 4 (or more!) puppet-masters, to the beat of the celebratory drums. They are meant to scare away evil spirits, and bring good luck in the new year.
Gung Hei Fat Choi!
I wish you purring kitties and good luck in the Year of the Snake.

This week was very exciting in the magazine department because we got 2 incredibly inspirational issues through the door!

QuiltCon 2025 has a delightful surprise for eQuilter fans when you turn that first page. This just landed on my desk Friday, and I have to tell you the Modern Quilt movement just gets better every year. I am most intrigued and inspired by the COLOR trends that keep evolving in this burgeoning branch of the Quilting Family Tree.
We do have a few copies of QuiltCon 2024 in stock which has become a collector item, in case you missed out last year.
We have compiled a list of relief agencies and non-profits who are on the ground in the So Cal communities affected by the fires. I hope you will join us in donating whatever you can afford to help those who have lost everything.

Don’t know about you, but I am in the mood for a little escapism tonight. Would you like to join me for a little walk through the forest?
I feel lucky to have been imbued with respect and delight for the natural world, as I was growing up. We lived in California until I was 10, and my memories of those years are a swirl of Beach, Redwood Forest, Mount Shasta, and a sprinkle of Disneyland on top. Then we moved to Colorado, and every other Sunday my parents would take us for a drive in the mountains. Literally a “Sunday drive”. Often we would go straight to Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park, sometimes sliding down glaciers (that are gone now), stopping for a herd of elk, or searching for trout and beavers in the alpine streams.
Summer music camp at the base of Longs Peak was how I spent 3 summers as a teen. One night we snuck out to a meadow with sleeping bags to look at the Milky Way and watch shooting stars. And oh yeah, one night when I was sneaking back to my log cabin, I came face to face with a juvenile (teenager) bear. We both took off running in opposite directions, after several long moments eye-to-eye. (You can read about that on my artist website blog.)
I did a lot of hiking (and a little cross-country skiing) in our mountains before I blew out my knees. I have some special memories of wildflowers and high altitude pristine lakes. And of course wandering through groves of golden Aspen in the fall, breathing in that spicy earthy aroma of fallen leaves.
Hopefully you have similar memories that you can return to, when it is time to clear your head and calm your heart. I like to imagine that I am walking on the beach at sunset, or wandering along a forest path with the sound of a waterfall in the distance. When I am sewing, I love to work with beautiful artwork of these Nature themes…because they bring forth these memories. Art, color, design and quilting all help me to center into the moment and find a peaceful place.
Right now I am in the home stretch, finishing two nature-themed quilts before I leave for my solo gallery at the Kyoto Quilt Festival. If you’d like to follow along, subscribe to my artist blog here!
We hope that our fabrics bring you moments of meditation and joy as we all sail into 2025.

Tonight’s free eQuilter pattern features a newlywed couple in Paris. This atmospheric image captures a couple on a picturesque walk, with the summer sky and famous Parisian view in the background.
To make this 50″ x 64″ framed quilt design, you will start with the 29″ x 44″ scenic panel. We love the pop of red against the muted tones in the background scene, featuring the Eiffel Tower. We’ve added two Hoffman Hand Dyes, Kona Solid Black and a Red Hoffman Hand-Dye to create a dimensional frame around this romantic image.
Whether you have poignant memories of a past visit to the City of Light, or you dream of visiting the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, this quilt captures the imagination and spins a beautiful daydream!
