Creative Nudge – the Colors of Cuba

Untitled-1

It has been 10 days since I returned from Cuba, and the colors are still haunting me. I keep playing salsa music in my studio, and I am still craving black beans and rice.

Art is alive and well in Cuba, despite their economic problems. Artists there make do with what is available, whether it is refurbishing a 1950s Chevy, or taking broken ceramics and making colorful mosaics.

One artist has created a mosaic that extends past his studio, beyond his home, fills his yard and has covered his neighborhood! His name is Jose Fuster and his magical creation is Fusterlandia. His work is inspired by a combination of Gaudi and Picasso – whole landscapes filled with mosaic-covered undulating sculptures – with the abstract eye of Picasso.

Here in this photo collage, you can see his neighbor’s house on the upper left, and a neighborhood wall on the lower right. If you go to my photo page you will see I have just uploaded some more photos including many from his home, studio and neighborhood. He has literally turned his neighborhood into a tourist attraction!

The top right photo is the historic Hotel Nacional and the bay beyond, with a stunning sunset over the water. On the far side of the bay is the Castle Morro which has been featured in many movies.

The 3 Blue-Green cars illustrate one of the ubiquitous colors of Cuba, a Greenish-Teal or an Aqua-Jade that I will forevermore think of as Cuban Green. The houses are painted a pastel version of this color, and all shades appear throughout the city of Havana, with more shades of Aqua-Green in the water and waves.

If you missed my story about Ernest Hemingway’s house last week, be sure to have a look on our blog. You can always review our newsletters on this page.

Are you interested in traveling to Cuba with me next year? If so send us an email and we’ll keep you updated on any developments.

Babysitting, Braces, Tours and Houston

We are so excited! A special package was delivered at our house a few minutes ago, with preview copies of the Nov/Dec issue of Machine Quilting Magazine. The cover story of “Kids Who Create” features our very own Sophie Rubin! We are so proud of her! We hope to receive our eQuilter copies to sell online next week – if you are a subscriber check out page 52.

Sophie is at the YMCA getting her Red Cross babysitting certification today. We are about to enter a whole new era in our household: we have one kid left at home, who is now a teenager and a dyed-in-the-wool entrepreneur! *smile* She is planning to get babysitting business cards printed up. Her summer experience as a CIT (counselor in training) at a mountain camp, made her realize she loves to work with kids. Sweet!

The big news at our house this week was that Sophie is getting her braces off while I am in Houston, after over 2 years of metal and rubber bands in her mouth. Whew!

We had two lovely groups of ladies visit us this last week – the Interfaith Quilters from Longmont (who raised over $40K for charity with their quilt sale this year) and Judy Mendelson’s US quilt tour visiting from the UK. It was great to meet all of you!

We do schedule group tours on Friday afternoons if you are planning to visit Boulder. Just contact Dana in Customer Service to schedule a visit!

Lea McComas came here to give a presentation to the UK quilters, explaining how she creates her Thread-Painted quilts, and there was a lot of oohing and aaaaahing when she pulled out her amazing stitched portraits.

My studio was flooded this summer and I lost a month of work while they were ripping out drywall and tearing apart my bathroom, so I am now working hard against a couple deadlines. I do have one quilt that will be in a group exhibit in Houston – my Bobcat for Arches National Park will be in the National Parks Centennial exhibit. I look forward to meeting all the other artists who participated in this quilt challenge!

By the way we do have the magazine preview of the Houston Quilt Festival, if you want a sneak peek! I’ll be filming some video reviews of the show, and those will start to pop up mid-November.

Creative Nudge – Hemingway’s House

Untitled-1

Today I’d like to share the view of Ernest Hemingway‘s study, at his Finca Vigía estate in Cuba. This was definitely a highlight of my visit to this island nation, as my visit to Tolstoy’s house and study were highlights of my trip to Russia. It is so fascinating to travel back in time, to visit the home, library, and creative space of this literary legend. This estate is on the World Monuments Fund’s list of 100 most endangered historic sites.

Recently there has been a great interest in the life of Hemingway. Last year I saw the movie “Hemingway & Gellhorn“, about his 3rd wife who was a war correspondent, and who inspired “For Whom the Bell Tolls“. I’ve also recently read the book “The Paris Wife” about his first wife. Since visiting Cuba I’ve picked up a couple more books about his life.

The collage above includes photos from the estate, and similar fabrics from the eQuilter collection, including a library full of cats. Hemingway was the male literary version of a Crazy Cat Lady. He collected cats and their descendants still live on at least one of his properties. Here you can see the desk and the study, and in the collage are also photos of his famous typewriter, a globe, and a shelf from his 9000 book library.

I have posted photos from my first two days of this weeklong trip. I’ll be posting more photos…..Enjoy!

The Color & Culture of Havana

I am writing to you on my last night in Havana Cuba, because I will be en route home on Saturday. It is always a humbling experience to visit a developing country where people have to do so much with so little. I was here all week on a cultural exchange, and I was delighted that a friend could come along who speaks fluent Spanish. During our home stay with a rural family in Western Cuba, thanks to her, we had a very intimate experience with the extended family of our host family. I brought along sewing supplies that will serve the whole village. We heard stories about 3 or 4 people sharing one needle between them, can you imagine? Now that village has enough needles for everyone, and many pairs of scissors for the families to share.

After I get home and catch my breath I’ll be sharing more photos with you. I have a couple batches already posted on my photo page. Today we visited a dance school in Havana and over a hundred students performed for us… from flamenco to Michael Jackson. Yesterday we visited a neighborhood that was full of mosaic walls and mosaic-covered sculptures… sort of a cross between Picasso and Gaudi. The home of the artist was like a giant Art Park and it had grown to encompass much of the neighborhood surrounding his home. He made his neighborhood into a tourist destination with his prodigious output of mosaic art – just amazing!

While spending 24 hours in a rural village, we had some fascinating experiences. There was an impromptu soccer game in a field with the local teenage boys, and some visiting tourists from several countries joined them in the muddy field. There were many languages being spoken which was surreal, considering we were so far out in the country. At the end of the game some of the local boys jumped on their little horses (who had been grazing at the edge of the soccer field), waved goodbye and trotted home down the village streets. The next morning we saw the farmers riding to work on their horses, and also in carts drawn by water buffaloes. The birth rate is low so we didn’t see too many babies or young children. One family had a 2 month old baby, and they said pretty much the whole village comes by every night to admire the baby.

What we *did* see was COLOR, amidst the crumbling renaissance-era facades. As I mentioned in my midweek newsletter, parts of Old Havana look like a war zone because of the deteriorating old buildings. It made me really appreciate what it takes to maintain these old structures. What impressed everyone in our group is how sweet and friendly the Cubans were, despite the extreme challenges of the economy here. No matter where I travel, people are people, and this has been a cultural experience I will never forget. As a photographer it was overwhelming to try to capture all that I experienced, but I’ll try to share the highlights in the next week.

Creative Nudge – Havana Heritage

nudge9.30

Tonight I am writing to you from the Fifties-style lobby lounge of my hotel in Havana, Cuba! I am here on a cultural exchange trip this week, traveling with a friend who is going to help us place the donated quilts for earthquake victims of Nepal.

This city and this country are frozen in time – from when the embargo was placed on Cuba in 1960. One of the things unique to this country is that they have had limited access to imported cars since then, so they just keep refurbishing and fixing up their beloved US cars from the 40s and 50s. All over the city you see these beautifully restored cars, many being used as multi-passenger taxis. They are painted in all different colors, and contrast nicely with the many brightly colored buildings. There is a particular shade of bright Mint-Aqua that I see in the houses and the cars, which reflects the color of the waters between the Florida Keys and Cuba.

Today we had an Ernest Hemingway day. We visited one of his favorite watering holes in Old Havana, then we visited his estate about a half hour out of town. The house is up on a hill, and is filled with books, music, and art. It looks as if he is still living there, and his presence (and that of his friends) seem to fill the rooms like ghosts…the hushed voices of the tourists fill the house and seem to echo the voices of Papa and his guests.

Down below the house is a pool and cabana right out of a Hollywood set. The guide whispered breathlessly that Ava Gardner once swam there sans suit. The pool is empty now, and just beyond the pool housed in a large open shed is Hemingway’s fishing boat ‘Pilar’, looking like a giant fish out of water. Between the pool and the boat are the small grave-sites of his 4 favorite dogs.

I must confess I have been woefully ignorant about this isolated island nation, especially about its history. I did not realize that Columbus ‘discovered’ Cuba in 1492! In 1510, the first Spanish colonists arrived from Hispaniola and began the conquest of Cuba. The Spanish subsequently wiped out the native inhabitants, then brought slaves from Africa to build the city and then work the sugar plantations.

Many of the centuries-old colonial buildings have been restored since UNESCO, the cultural arm of the United Nations, designated Havana a world heritage site in 1982. The central and oldest part of Havana was built in the 16th century, much of it crumbling now, and many streets have the look of a city that has endured a long war. Neo-Baroque and Art Deco treasures are deteriorating at an alarming rate. Every few days, a couple partial or total building collapses occur in Central Havana alone. A combination of age, decay, neglect and weather are threatening 19th century neoclassical villas and Spanish colonial mansions.

The Spanish and African population now have mixed together in a melting pot of cultures, reflected in the cuisine, music and art of this unique society. Cuban jazz, mojitos, and revolutionary art are just some of the cultural gifts we’ve received from this island nation.

I have posted photos from my first two days of this weeklong trip. I’ll be posting more photos…..Enjoy!
