eQuilter Free Pattern – Snow Crystals

SnowCrystals

reposted from 8/1 eQuilter newsletter:

This stunning winter quilt uses scenic batiks and snowflake panels, to create this bold visual effect.

Bordered by a scenic batik with deer in a snowy forest, this quilt evokes deep winter nights and the hush after a snowstorm. Cranberry Red, Midnight Navy and Crystal Blue are all used to evoke the saturated colors of the holiday season.

Perhaps use a wool batting for a super-snuggly lap quilt in the coming winter months?

You may order the pattern as configured, (click through here to see the specifics!) or customize it to your liking with any of our over 20,000 fabrics. Just place your desired fabrics in your Wish List, and these fabrics will appear in the Fabric Selector below the pattern.

This pattern was designed in EQ7, which is available here at eQuilter.

Many thanks to Larene Smith for this Wintry quilt pattern.

Creative Nudge – Joyous Hearts

Zebra

Reposted from 7/30:

I am writing to you from the Cape Town Airport, as I wait to board the 1st of my 4 flights home. As I reflect on the meaning of these 9 days in South Africa, it strikes me how poverty is in some ways the same throughout the world, and yet it is not….

One thing that is the same no matter where you experience extreme poverty, is that once you see it in person, you cannot fail to be moved. Your life is never the same. You feel you must speak out, or do something, or both.

My first experience with poverty in shantytowns was in Hong Kong when I was 22. In a way, I was lucky to have this experience so young, because it placed my world in a much larger context early in my adult life.

One thing I can tell you is that from the depths of poverty comes some of the most amazing creativity, and some of the most open and loving hearts. I was privileged to meet many of these special hearts in the last week, and that will remain the highlight of the trip. Traveling to a Clover Mama aftercare center, which services over 300 orphans and impoverished schoolchildren living in a shantytown, was an experience I will never forget. (Yes I have photos!)

The group of US quilters with whom I traveled, were many of those joyous open hearts. The last night of the trip, on the way to a farewell dinner in a township, we got a singing and dancing Motown review in the back of the bus…with harmony!

I have posted 75 photos from the Johannesburg quilt show on my photo page, so you can start to look at those as I fly home today. There will be more photos from my South Africa experience, once I get home and have a day to rest. Please also click through to our video page to see the first video filmed in my new studio – on Indigo and Ikats.

The quilt above is by Cathy Knox, and represents a seed pod. (See the whole quilt on my photo page.) The zebra is in the Pilanesburg Game Reserve.

Greetings from the Bottom of Africa

DSC_4114

I am writing to you tonight from Cape Town in South Africa. It is winter here, but a relatively mild coastal winter season… it was a partly cloudy/rainy 57 degrees fahrenheit here today.

It is a week since I left Colorado. I spent 2 days getting to S. Africa, and we hit the ground running in Johannesburg. I am traveling with Women of Color Quilters Network, and the reason for the trip in the first place was because of a quilt exhibit about Nelson Mandela, with quilts by African American and South African quilters. There is a companion book (hot off the press here in Cape Town) and we will carry the books at eQuilter as soon as we can get them in stock.

Yesterday we went on a big photo safari at the Pilanesburg Game Reserve, and it was SO exciting to see all the animals in the wild. The problem of rhino poaching is just heartbreaking, made more bittersweet because we saw 4 pairs of mother-and-baby rhinos in the park. The poaching of tigers, elephants, rhinos, etc. is caused by the unimaginable poverty here. When 30-40% of the population live in tin shacks with dirt floors, and no running water or electricity, it is a daunting task.

Thursday I visited an after-care center for kids who live in one of these shanty-towns. The kids who attend this program are the poorest of the poor…. orphans being raised by older siblings, or living in extreme poverty with little or no food. I made a donation to the center on behalf of eQuilter, but it is a drop in the bucket. The program is funded by Clover – a local dairy company. It is called Clover Mama Afrika, and they set up local "Mamas" to run these centers all over S. Africa. If the older sibling is not old enough to raise the kids, then they place them in foster homes. It is a very common problem here, with so many parents dying of AIDS.

Thursday morning I spent at the quilt convention, and I'll have some wonderful quilt photos for you in the next week when I get back. My internet connection in Johannesburg was just awful, and I am having a respiratory issue because of the intense smoke/pollution in Joburg, so I am going to take it easy and post the photos when I get back.

Many thanks to those of you who donated quilts for the children. They were just blown away that we were actually *giving* the quilts. They went to 2 daycares in shanty towns, and the children and caregivers just went nuts over the colorful quilts.

We have 2 days of touring in the Cape Town area, and then I'll start the long journey home on Tuesday, arriving Wednesday.

Creative Nudge – No Caterpillars Please

AfricaCollage_550

Greetings from South Africa!

We hit the ground running Monday – landing in Johannesburg in the morning and visiting an Arts and Crafts collective at Nelson Mandela Square later in the day.

Tuesday we spent the day at Lesedi Cultural Village, learning about 5 different South African Ethnic Groups (previously known as Tribes), watching a rousing session of various dances with drums and singing, and then a South African buffet.

Fortunately as a vegetarian, I was able to refuse the Ostrich, Crocodile, and Caterpillars. I've had a few meals here, and the vegetarian fare always seems to include pumpkin or butternut squash, spinach, and halloumi. I had these with "soy chicken" and rice for breakfast – yummy!

Tuesday night we met several women from Clover Mama Afrika, and heard about the seemingly insurmountable tasks these women have taken on here. One young woman cares for mentally and physically disabled children, who are considered "throwaway" children in many poor African communities. Another woman watches primary students before and after school, and has anywhere from 300 to 1000 kids to watch at one time!

Many of these children are being raised by older siblings, because the parents have died from AIDS/HIV. We had a brainstorming session about how to help the Mamas and I had some fundraising ideas for the organization. When you drive through the town and then the countryside, and see the vast shantytowns, you realize this is just the tip of the iceberg.

We had 7 quilts donated before I left on my trip, so 4 will go to a care center for babies Wednesday, and the other 3 will go to another group on Friday. I brought them over in my 2nd suitcase, stuffed with fabric/notions/thread/magazines for the Clover Mama quilting collective.

I am taking lots of photos and will start posting them tomorrow, but for now I need to try to get a few hours of sleep!

If you are coming to the Quilt Convention Africa on Thursday, please come to my presentation at 11 am. I will also be at the Award Ceremony Thursday at 5:30 pm.

The collage above has a photo of several Kuba Cloth panels in the middle, surrounded by swatches of eQuilter African fabrics.

Quilting Arts TV Blog Hop!

Welcome to the Quilting Arts TV Blog Hop!

I am excited to help kick off this weeklong blog hop with the other guests for Series 1400. Just in time too – because tonight I'll be flying to Frankfurt and then Johannesburg – on Carolyn Mazloomi's tour group to the International Quilt Convention Africa. (speaking at the convention July 26)

In my QA TV segment, I show the fundraiser fabric collection "Urban Textures"  for SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Association). Susan Brubaker-Knapp was enthusiastic on her first day of the shoot in her new role as Quilting Arts TV host. I felt it was such an honor to work with her on that first day!

046

Last year we put out a call to SAQA members for artwork to be considered for a fabric collection which would be produced by Andover Fabrics. From 209 entries, we chose 6 artists' work to be translated into a collection of 18 pieces.

053
This collection was previewed at Spring Quilt Market in May 2014 in Pittsburgh, PA, and will be introduced and sold at the Houston Quilt Market in Oct 2014.

You can see the collection on the Andover website at:

http://andoverfabrics.com/Grid.php?GroupName=Urban%20Textures

The 6 artists are:

Elizabeth Brandt

Martha Ressler

Janice Paine Dawes

Laura Wasilowski

Shandra Belknap

Linda Egstrom

Congratulations to the 6 winning artists, and many thanks to all of the artists who submitted the original 209 artworks.

This collection was created to be a fundraiser for SAQA, so all royalties from the sale of this collection will go directly 100% to SAQA.

Creative Nudge – Purrfect Companion

LolaEyes

This one is for all of you who share photos of cats on Facebook, Pinterest or Instagram. We love sharing images of our own beloved cats, and we love clicking through pictures of cute, silly, grumpy, sleepy, playful kitties.

A couple weeks ago we brought home an adult female cat from the Humane Society. She had a cold so she had to be in quarantine in our bedroom for a week. This week she hid in the basement for several days, but today she came out to explore the rest of the house with great curiosity. She is now calmly walking past Ruby, our 15 month old Golden, and Titus our 10 year old naughty boy kitty. Thank goodness everybody is getting along because I leave for South Africa in 3 days! (Wait…what?!?)

Many of you love to share photos of your cats "helping" as you quilt – in fact many quilt exhibits stipulate that there can be NO cat hair on the quilts that are entered into shows and contests. Ha!

I am officially moved into my new studio downstairs at eQuilter, and we are shooting our first videos there today. Unfortunately my new studio cat Lola will have to stay in my home studio, but I am sure some quantity of cat hair will travel to work with me every day. She is a total lover-kitty, and we feel lucky to have found her waiting for us in a cage at the pound.

Yesterday I received a lovely surprise in the mail…a handwritten note from Rosalynn Carter following up on the Vail Retreat for the Carter Center. How exciting! I am sharing this in the folder of photos from my meeting with Pres. and Mrs. Carter a couple weeks ago. The invitation to the retreat came as a result of all the fundraising efforts we've put forth over the years, and I must share that honor with all of you who have supported our charity efforts over the years, including the 10,000+ quilts that have been donated for Mission of Love and disaster relief. Thank you!

sharing your Passion for Fabric…and Cats!

Dana, Quilt Colorado, & South Africa

P1330048

I know many of you are anxious to know that Dana's heart surgery went very well this week, and we are told she had the best outcome possible. Thank you for your prayers, and we wish her a speedy recovery during her 6 week medical leave. We are still collecting 8" Heart Blocks in Purple and Green this week for a Healing Quilt, but the quilt construction will begin shortly. Many thanks to those of you who sent very special heart blocks for Dana.

July 19 I am departing for South Africa with Carolyn Mazloomi's tour group. Yes, I still have room in my large 2nd suitcase for donated lap quilts for the kids in need there, but they need to arrive by Thursday at the latest!

If you are coming to the quilt convention in Johannesburg, please do come to my presentation on Thursday at 11 am – "International Quilt Trends". Be sure to come and say hello there or on the show floor – I would really love to meet our South African friends and customers while visiting there!

This Wednesday night is the award ceremony for Quilt Colorado, put on by our state guild Colorado Quilting Council. (CQC) I'll be giving the top award at the end of the evening – perhaps it will be to one of our eQuilter customers?

My new studio floor is being finished this weekend, and we are moving everything down Monday. Yes it is a crazy week!

My plan is to open up my studio to some events such as workshops, retreats, online classes, etc. Keep an eye on my newsletters because I'll be asking for your input on what you'd like to see in this space. There is a new hotel that opened up one block away from eQuilter, so there are many possibilities to consider for the future. Very exciting!

Summertime in Boulder is very beautiful, with the red Flatirons, the green foothills, and the white glaciers visible on the high distant peaks of the Continental Divide. We feel so lucky to live in such an inspiring part of the country.

We do arrange group tours of eQuilter on Friday afternoons, so if you have a group that would like to visit eQuilter, let us know.

Creative Nudge – Summer Jazz

MusicCollage_550

Summertime is often a time for outdoor music festivals, a musician playing on a street corner, and music wafting through an open window at night.

One of my great inspirations is music, and all of our children have become musicians and music lovers. We often are going out to hear them perform, or going to hear live music in the community.

One of my favorite ways to get creative is to load up my multi-CD player with several hours worth of music of a particular genre, to evoke a certain mood that I want to express in my creative work. Jazz, classical and world music are all favorites, plus a few pop favs like Sting!

I like to play around with the settings on my camera when I have a chance to photograph an interesting subject, as I did last week at a jazz club. Here is a black and white mood photo, with a collage of eQuilter fabrics.

You can put fabrics in your shopping cart and then dump them onto our Design Board to play around with color combinations, as I have above. We know your favorite part of starting a new project is auditioning fabrics, i.e. playing around with your real or imaginary stash! Me too!

I wanted to let you know that Dana's heart surgery today was a success, with the best possible outcome, so thank you for all your prayers and good wishes. We are starting her Healing Quilt shortly so if you are still sending an 8" purple/green Heart Block for our project, drop us an email so we can save a spot for your block!

My new studio's flooring goes in Thursday, and then we start moving on the weekend!
