Creative Nudge – Party Time!

VeniceCollage_550

It's Carnivale in Venice, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janiero!

You don't need a feathered headdress or sequin-covered costume to join the party!

Take a little trip to Venezia this week, with our Carnivale and Mardi Gras themed fabrics, in this collage of photos and fabrics from my trip to Italy a couple years ago.

Or check out my photos from New Orleans and the Mardi Gras Museum, for some Mardi Gras fun.

You can also see my photos from Venice for more color and design ideas!

Our eQuilter Design Board has some cool new features, and it now supports mobile devices! Just put some items into your shopping cart, and click on 'Design Board' to begin.

You may arrange images by clicking (tapping) and dragging. Double-click (or double-tap) on images to duplicate them. To remove duplicates, click (or tap), release, then click the red 'X'.

And your customized design board is now saved in your browser, so you can return to it later (for the most recent browsers: IE9+, FF, Chrome, Safari).

My Churchill Polar Bear tour group is set for Oct 14-19, and the very limited 14 slots are now open for registration. I know that a few spots have already been reserved, so visit our POLAR BEAR info and itinerary page for more details!

Olympic Patchwork

OlympicPatchwork

I think by now every quilter in the world knows that the graphics for the Sochi Olympics in Russia are the image of a diamond patchwork quilt.

We've had many queries from quilters asking if this fabric is available, if the pattern is available, who is the designer, etc.

I've seen a lot of talk online, speculating on whose work this is. The diamond patchwork pattern is so ubiquitous that we could give a long list of quilters who have made this design, from the famous artist, to the unknown rural quilter.

What I have heard the most is that the design and colors remind people of Kaffe Fassett's work. The patchwork graphics are in multicolor, and also several tonal/monotone versions.

The patchwork graphics, developed by Bosco, were inspired by various textile, needlework, and craft traditions in Russia. When traveling in Russia in September 2012, I was entranced by the variety of Russian traditional artwork. You may enjoy looking at my photos from that trip, or watching the 2 video interviews that I did with Russian quilters at the last two Birmingham Quilt Festivals.

The Russian quilters I've been in touch with the last two weeks are understandably proud that their patchwork traditions are being shared with the world in this way. I was contacted by a group of Russian Quilters through Facebook, and through them I saw this Russian video that you may enjoy.

One of the reasons I left the Fashion Industry and came into the Quilting Industry is because I saw quilting as a way to express love and comfort, but also because I believe that quilting brings people together from around the world, to transcend political and cultural boundaries.

In this way, the Olympics and Quilting are the same. They bring people together to share their joy and passion, no matter what nationality, race or religion. We celebrate our differences, we compete peacefully, and we celebrate the talent and hard work of the champions!

Creative Nudge – Spike It Up

HanabiDetail1a_550

I am writing to you from Las Vegas, where I am attending a fashion trade show, checking out the textile trends for 2015!

This week I am sharing some color inspiration with you from the Tokyo Quilt Festival. This is a detail from the quilt "Hanabi" from the Original Design category. The artist's name is Chieko AKADA in Japanese in the lower right hand corner.

Purple and Orange
have become a popular but somewhat wild color scheme. Only the bravest
of the brave will tackle a wild mix of colors including both Orange and Purple. When it is done well, it is brilliant. When it is not done so well, it is described in lurid terms.

Here we see 2 groups of analogous colors:

Lavender, purple and Orchid Pink

plus

Paprika, Tangerine and Marigold

with a few more accent colors to spike it up.

Do you remember when the combination of Red and Aqua first came out, and it looked SO different? Now it is an accepted, and desirable color combination in contemporary design. When those MidCentury Modern color stories first came out a few years ago, the Red and Aqua was exciting and scary at the same time. Now it is considered Hip, Cutting Edge, Acceptable.

So what will be the next crazy color combination to test our sensibilities?

Try playing around with color combinations that are just a little bit "off", and then spike it up with something crazy, and perhaps soften it with some added neutrals.

When a color combination catches your eye, snap a photo with your smartphone for future reference.

Color inspiration is all around us, every day.

Mix traditional with contemporary, neutral with acid brights, soft
grays with deep saturated jeweltones. When you find something that is
just a little crazy but somehow strikes a balance, make it your own!

My Churchill Polar Bear tour group
is set for Oct 14-19, and the very limited 14 slots are now open for
registration. I know that a few spots have already been reserved, so
visit our POLAR BEAR info and itinerary page for more details!

Scandinavian Influences

HeliBearShadow2

Sophie and I finally got out to see the movie "Frozen" this weekend, and I was so charged up by the beautiful winter imagery. Of course I realize that many of you are buried in snow and ice and might relate more to the frigid story line, than the gorgeous visuals of this movie…but I loved seeing the Scandinavian costumes and architectural details…even though it was animated! (like the wool applique designs on the princess' dresses)

The movie is (very!) loosely based on "The Snow Queen", a Danish fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. We couldn't get out to see it until now, because of all the snow and ice we've had here!

I've been saying for awhile that we are due for a Scandinavian design trend to hit our industry, and I am starting to see more of this in the artwork previews for 2014. With the Viking influences that will come with "How to Train Your Dragon – 2" later this year, and the lingering design inspirations of "Frozen" and the Winter Olympics, I am hoping to see a fresh expression of Swedish, Norwegian, etc. art influences… beyond Ikea and Marimekko!  I have been seeing that Scandinavian influence in Japanese quilts for awhile, so it is fun to see how these design influences start and grow.

These tours all sell out in advance because there are just not enough hotel rooms for everyone who wants to come to Churchill during the brief Polar Bear viewing Season. With Quilt Market and Festival right in the middle of this season, I snagged reservations for us at the beginning of the season so as not to create a conflict for anyone else who is going to Houston. Last year I went the last week of the season as the bears were heading off across the ice, but this year I hope to also see the caribou before they head south.

October 1st I will be at the US Embassy in Rome again, attending the opening of a Hunger themed exhibit in conjunction with the UN. I will keep you informed about this exhibit as the date draws near.

Creative Nudge – Star Power

WaRed1a_550

Above is a detail from the 3rd place quilt in the "WA" category, at the recent Tokyo Quilt Festival. I just love the interplay of colors in this piece, but I also love the contrast of the stripes and the colorful florals in the intricately pieced star blocks.

You can see more detail shots, and the overall quilt image, on my photo page. (Please note: the quiltmaker's name is in the lower right hand corner of the image.)

The eye-popping effect comes from not only a value contrast (light vs. dark) but also a complementary color juxtaposition, using a spread of warm analogous colors (RedOrange-Gold) in contrast with the cool Blue-Teal.

To view my photos from the Tokyo Quilt Festival, or the colorful fabrics on our eQuilter.com site, be sure that your monitor is color-calibrated. If you are viewing on a laptop, the colors may be somewhat washed out. This is why we use very specific color names for our fabric descriptions, because we know that not everyone's computer monitor can show accurate color.

We have just uploaded the 2 latest Quilting Arts TV segments that Sophie and I did for this season.

Sophie shows handloomed Ikat Yarn-Dyes from around the world in Episode #1304, and in Episode #1313 I discuss the eQuilter charity programs, including the thousands of beautiful quilts that all of you have donated for our various disaster relief projects. Have a look – you just might see your quilt in the images in this clip!

In case you haven't heard, Pokey Bolton, the longtime host of Quilting Arts TV, is stepping down from that role. Susan Brubaker Knapp will be the new host, and we wish her the best! I'll be traveling to Ohio in March to film 2 more segments with Susan.

We'll miss Pokey, but we wish her good luck as she moves on to new creative endeavors!

Due to popular demand, we now have 3 weekly newsletters.
You can opt in or opt out of any, at any time.

I mention this because I have had so many queries about opting IN for our Midweek Creative Nudge, and our new Free Pattern newsletter which comes out on Friday mornings.

This week we had over 300 new fabrics showcased in our weekender newsletter. It is kind of like the quilters' version of the Sunday Paper.

Last week's midweek Creative Nudge featured a closeup of a Log-Cabin Hexagon in Taupe Dobby Linen from a Handbag at the Tokyo Quilt Festival.

Friday's free pattern newsletter had a Winter Olympic Commemorative quilt pattern, and as you may know, you can customize your quilt pattern with Paul's brilliant pattern designer (i.e. add in Alpine Skiers and Snowboarders, or maybe some Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls) – and then email your design to your friends!

If that is not enough creative inspiration, you can always check out my 6500 travel and quilt show photos…or watch our 122 quilt videos. *wink*

We hope you are enjoying all of the eye candy and creative ideas from eQuilter. If you are a social media fan, you can always find our links to the eQuilter Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram accounts on our home page – just look for the cute little hexagon icons. Have fun!

We have sent out information and links to everyone who expressed interest in the Polar Bear Tour. Space is very limited for this exclusive adventure, so if you'd like to receive this info please email Dana in Customer Service at [email protected]

eQuilter Free Pattern – Winter Olympics

As the world comes together in peaceful competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia…eQuilter brings you this Olympic Commemorative Quilt Pattern, featuring the "Winter Olympics" collection from Quilting Treasures.

Our latest free pattern features the main design "Tribute 1924 – 2014" celebrating the 90th anniversary of the games. This blue and white landscape print names the sites of the Winter Olympics, including Torino, St Moritz, Sarajevo, Salt Lake, Nagano (where I photographed the Snow Monkeys a couple weeks ago), and of course Sochi.

SochiQuilt

Over the past several months, here at eQuilter we've been preparing for the Sochi games, stocking up on our fabrics featuring Winter Sports, Olympic Sports, Winter & Snow themes, and Russian themes.

This striking quilt design shows off the main print like a travelogue through the history of the Winter Games.

You may order the pattern as configured, (click through here to see the specifics!) or customize it to make your own version of this Winter Olympic Commemorative Quilt!

Just place your desired fabrics in your Wish List, and these fabrics will appear in the Fabric Selector below the pattern.

Click Here for a Video Tutorial of the Free Pattern Designer. Download Instructions for the pattern at the bottom of the pattern designer page.

Creative Nudge – The Power of Hex

HexLogCabin_550

They say that good things come in small packages, and the quilted handbag display at the Tokyo Quilt Festival is a great example of this homily. This section of the quilt show is always packed, because everyone wants to see how much minute detail and "Wow Factor" can be put into each piece of Wearable Arm-Art.

Many of the ladies who make these handbags, live in such tiny spaces, that making a big quilt is just out of the question. Hence the popularity of the handbag and miniature framed art quilts at the show. They are all little jewels – little treasures that can be worked on and worn in the crowded Tokyo environment.

Here is a closeup detail of one of the handbags. As you can see, she is combining 4 important design trends:

Hexagons blocks
Log Cabin piecing
Yarn-Dyed Linen-Weight fabrics
Taupe and Gray Neutrals

Who knew so many good things could be packed into such a small package?!

Every year I delight in seeing the cross-cultural exchange of visual ideas, between Japan and the Western quilters. There has been a parallel growth in the hexagon and log cabin revivals, but the popularity and beauty of Taupe colors and yarn-dyed fabrics has been slow to catch on here in the West. Perhaps we will see more of this, later this year in the US quilt shows?

My Churchill Polar Bear tour group is set for Oct 14-19, and the very limited 14 slots will open up in a couple days. ABBA, Broncos & Bears

TopAwards1

Despite the fact that the Denver Broncos are in the Super Bowl on Sunday, I am still making plans to be creative in the afternoon, then drive to see Mamma Mia in downtown Denver while the streets are empty. A friend's husband is the lighting director and since it is Super Bowl Sunday, I got excellent seats for the last night of the show. Sophie is my partner in Abba-ness, and it will be hard for us not to join the cast in singing our favorite tunes. Several years ago we went to a Mamma Mia SingAlong showing of the film here, and it was all women of course. At the end everyone got on stage and danced to the final party scene…some in Abba costumes. Ha!

Anyway – Go Broncos! – hopefully when we emerge from the theater there will be
a spontaneous victory celebration on the streets of Downtown Denver. If
not…we'll drink a cup of coffee to honor the Seattle Seahawks.

Superbowl Sunday is known for being one of the most productive days for
quilters who are not football fans. However I must admit, instead of the
Pregame Show, we'll be watching the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet…while doing hand-applique on our Hawaiian quilting projects.
It's a good time to shop online too! (*Bwa-ha-haaa!*)

I continue to post more photos from the Tokyo Quilt Festival, as I add the artists' names to the
images. I am posting photos of the quilts that I think are most unique, most
inspiring, and of course most GORGEOUS! I hope you enjoy the selection of
amazing quilts that I am sharing with you. If you know someone else who is
posting Tokyo Quilt images, please urge them to include the names of the
quilters in their postings. We hope to see more of these quilts in person here
in the US, but we want them to know how much we value the
efforts of all the individual artists
. Thanks – pass it on!

I have signed a contract to lead a group on a Polar
Bear
tour to Churchill Canada, Oct 14-19 this year. We are in the process
of putting the details on a webpage, but since space is very limited, please
contact Customer Service to be emailed right away when details are set. We've
had a lot of interest so please let us know if you just can't wait for the next
newsletter!

We also wanted to let you know that Mission of Love just returned from another successful Cleft Lip/Palate surgery trip to Guatemala. If you follow them on Facebook, I am sure you've seen the beautiful photos. Mission of Love is one of the main recipients of the eQuilter Charity program, and a year ago I joined the surgeons on this annual trip to Guatemala. If any of you are health professionals who would like to volunteer for this amazing trip, contact Kathy Price at Mission of Love!

Creative Nudge – Indigo Aesthetic

BlueWa_550

One of the great pleasures of immersing oneself
in the Tokyo Quilt Festival, is to dive into the inky blue depths of the "Wa" exhibit, filled with
intricate quilts hand-pieced and hand-quilted, many constructed from vintage indigo fabrics.

Yes, there are shimmering brilliant silk quilts, made from a
grandmother's antique kimono, and there are excursions that range from the
subtle whisper of taupe, to the luxe of beading and gold metallic, but it is the quiet dignity of these indigo quilts that draws me back again and again.

There are many things at this show that express the Japanese aesthetic …as my
translator says… things that are "very Japanese" in their precision, their visual harmony, their discreet formality. They are a quiet statement about another time when indigo dyeing was a seasonal event, and every mark or woven design in an indigo cloth was carefully
considered and meticulously executed.

The brilliant colors of Japanese pop culture and contemporary design seemed more prevalent at this show, and I felt somehow (without counting) that there were less of the traditional taupe and indigo quilts, compared to previous years.

Japanese quilters and visiting textile collectors go to flea markets and
antique fairs throughout the year, looking for precious vintage cuttings of old
kimonos. Older traditional quilters mix and match these collector items into
new quilts, middle-age quilters might mix them with newer Asian prints, and younger
contemporary quilters often forgo the traditional Asian designs altogether…preferring retro and vintage looks from the 20th century.

In other words, there is something for everyone!

I am posting photos one batch at a time, because I want to make sure that the
quiltmaker's name is included with each image. Every year I see more and more
westerners going to this show and posting photos, but many or most do not make
any note of the artist's name.

You will find either the quiltmaker's name in kanji characters in the corner of the image, or the image will be saved with their name. I encourage anyone who posts photos from this show to include the name of the artist. Hopefully next year they will have more of the names translated into the transliteration of the romaji spelling of the name.

Please enjoy this photo tour of the show, and check back as I add more images over
the next week. In case you missed it, I also have photos of the Snow Monkeys of Nagano.

My Churchill Polar Bear tour group is set for Oct 13-19, (yes, this year!) and the very
limited 14 slots will open up in a couple days when I get the contract signed.
