Free Quilt Pattern – Patriotic Watercolor

As you make your plans for the New Year, start this patriotic quilt project for 2024 national holidays, and Quilts of Valor gifts.

To make this 64″ x 81″ exclusive quilt design, you will start with the gorgeous 24″ x 44″ central panel with Eagle and Flag, painted in the atmospheric alcohol ink technique. What really makes this project sing is the Red-White-Blue Ombre Waves that are used for the large inner border. Finish with smaller Star-Spangled stripes in the outer border, all layered with strips of a rich deep Indigo Hoffman Hand-Dye.

This quick-and-easy quilt goes together so fast, you’ll want to make more than one for your local Quilts of Valor organization.

As the Clock Ticks Down to Midnight…..

My Inbox is full of emails reviewing what happened in 2023. It is interesting to review some of those lists, but for many of us 2023 was a difficult year. I am always excited to start a New Year, but I am especially chuffed for 2024, because I am returning to my studio, and my art/design practice. I have given myself something to look forward to, so I can move forward. For those of you also mourning the loss of one or more loved ones, I invite you to join me by healing through creativity.

Recently I signed up again for Turner Classic Movies, and I’ve been slurping down the December festival movies of Cary Grant. Yesterday was Father Goose, Houseboat, and Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House. I used to spend time with Mom in her room, watching TCM old movies together. Now I watch them alone late at night, but I feel she is there with me.

Do you have a New Years Eve family tradition? For years Sophie Quinn and I have been going to downtown Denver for the Colorado Symphony’s “Night in Vienna” – an evening full of Strauss Waltzes and finishing with the traditional Radetzky March. That rousing piece sends us out into the last few hours of the year with smiles on our faces and a roaring fire in our hearts, ready to face whatever the New Year will bring. This year Sophie Quinn is working at Boettcher Hall for that concert (!) but she’ll come and slip into the aisle seat that I am saving for her, while the music plays.

We hope that you will also be filled with that creative fire from your New Year celebrations, we thank you for supporting our family business and our charity program in 2023. When you place an order, any order, 2% of your purchase goes to help those in need, save the planet, and bring comfort.

Wishing you many blessings in the New Year.

Luana and Paul

Free Quilt Pattern – Kaleidoscope Garden

This quick-and-easy Free Quilt Pattern is a riot of color, set off by borders of crisp Black and White Gingham Checks. Summer blossoms are exploding off the white background, giving the illusion of a lush 3-D garden in bright sunlight.

To make this 63″ x 63″ quilt design, start with the central square floral-and-bird panel, then add the coordinating stripe to create the engineered border. We’ve finished with a solid black frame and a solid white binding to set off the brilliant hues of the Roses, Iris, Lupines, Chrysanthemums, Columbine and Pansies.

We see this as a lap quilt, a wall hanging, or even a fabulous table-topper. This gorgeous painted garden is full of beautiful artistic details in the flowers and birds, that will make your heart sing!

As 2023 Winds Down….

Happy Kwanzaa!

Over the next few days, for those of you placing orders over $100…besides Free Shipping, we will include the Year-End “Good News” Newsletter booklet from Mission of Love. (As quantities last.) We have partnered with Mission of Love and Kathy Price for 25 years, supporting this all-volunteer non-profit to help those in need in Pine Ridge Reservation SD, Guatemala, Mayan Mexico, and more. I have traveled to Guatemala with Kathy and group of surgeons for a Cleft-Lip/Palate surgery trip, as the official photographer in the hospital waiting room and the operating room. I joined her in a tornado-devastated town to distribute comfort quilts to those who had lost their homes, and some had lost their children. A few of you in the Ohio area have reached out to volunteer, and many of you have donated quilts and cash for MOL to distribute to those with almost nothing. I thank you for your generosity.

This MOL newsletter features my portrait of Kathy which was made for the “Better World” exhibit, curated by Susan Brubaker Knapp and Lyric Montgomery Kinard. The quilts traveled 2019-2022, starting in Houston and ending at the Visions Museum. I know many of you saw this uplifting exhibit in person, celebrating amazing heroes.

The statement for this exhibit read:
“There are those among us who make personal sacrifices, who forgo comfort and safety while striving to make the world a better place. They are persistent and dogged in their determination to lift, to save, to shed light, to inspire. They are the helpers, the speakers, the ones who act. They soldier on in spite of persecution or personal risk. They seek to help one lone person or the entire planet. They represent the very best of humanity.”

This mission statement continues to inspire me – to support these courageous steadfast heroes when I meet them – to support their projects – and to aspire to similar accomplishments. I am returning to my studio to continue my art and design practice in 2024, and I have made a commitment that every piece I make will have the intention of inspiring others to think, to act, to speak out on behalf of those without a voice…from children and animals, to the Earth itself. Actually Mother Earth does have a voice, if we stop to listen. Perhaps as you contemplate your goals for 2024, you will take some time to listen to that gentle voice that is whispering to us in all of our quiet moments. “Peace”.

Free Quilt Pattern – Polar Paisley Party

While you eat your Christmas Eve pudding by the crackling fire, singing carols and wrapping those last few gifts…way up North the polar bears are happy and fat, celebrating their favorite time of year out on the ice.

Tonight’s Free Quilt Pattern takes us to a magical winter wonderland with embellished Polar Bears enjoying a frosty Arctic Eve under twinkling stars.

To make this 58″ x 69″ quilt design, start by pressing the 24″ x 44″ panel, glistening with Pearlescent accents. You will build the border with more embellished swirls, coordinating blenders, and the alternating Penguin and Polar Bear frame.

To make this coverlet/Nap quilt extra cozy, pick a coordinating Benartex flannel backing.

Prayers for Peace

Whether you are celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or Solstice this time of year…it is a time for family gatherings and prayers for Peace. As I have continued my mother’s genealogy research and discovered a long line of Quakers who came to the US in the 17th Century, my deep thirst for peace and compassion for those in need, has become more clear. We don’t need a reason to crave peace though, especially this time of year.

My friend Herma de Ruiter in the Netherlands, makes a stitch meditation every single day. (Using these Eleganza Perle Threads) These days she is making a stitch meditation with a Dove, as a prayer for peace. I do believe that when we make a quilt for a new baby, for a couple getting married, or for someone with a health challenge….every stitch is a prayer for a blessing on the recipient.

In these turbulent times, I urge all of you to Stitch for Peace over this holiday week. We can only hope that the power of thousands and millions of prayers for Peace and Healing will bring some resolution to the pain and suffering around the world. In the meantime the eQuilter charity program continues to send out thousands of dollars every month to our carefully chosen list of non-profits. When you place an order, any order, 2% of your purchase goes to help those in need, save the planet, and bring comfort.

This is the time of year to give (and receive!) eQuilter Gift Certificates. If you order now, you can have instant gratification with an emailed Gift Certificate. If you are on the receiving end of an eQuilter Gift Certificate (because you are an expert at dropping hints), now is the time to start planning your next couple projects for the post-holiday Winter Sewing Season.

Wishing you a holiday table full of Love and Light.

Free Quilt Pattern – Whose Nose and Toes?

This light and fun Free Quilt Pattern is just perfect for that little one who’s learning the names of wild animals … I bet you know just the child who would enjoy these happy zoo animals.

Make this 48″ x 58″ quilt as a Crib Quilt, or for the most fantastic Play Mat! Your favorite little person will find an Elephant, Giraffe, Rhino, Monkey, Tiger, and Crocodile to capture their attention on each ‘page’ of this Soft Book which has been cleverly turned into a child’s play quilt!

Start with the wild animal frames from the main panel, then mix in the fun zoo animal allover coordinate, and finish it off with the coordinating multi-color dot print. We know this will bring a big smile to the lucky kid who receives this baby animal themed quilt.

…from the ‘Whose Nose And Toes?’ collection by John Butler for Elizabeth’s Studio.

Order the pattern as configured, or customize it to your liking with any of our thousands of fabrics. Just place your desired fabrics in your Wish List, and these fabrics will appear in the Fabric Selector below the pattern.

A Time to Dream

A reminder that there is still time to send an eQuilter.com Gift Certificate by email, or drop a hint to receive one for yourself. Wait til you see what we have coming in 2024!

Today I had lunch with the founder of Engineers Without Borders (just returned from Uganda), and the recently retired president of the Wild Foundation, who has just returned from COP28. (The United Nations Climate Change Conference that just took place in Dubai.) If these 2 organizations sound familiar, it is because they are 2 of our 7 charities listed on the checkout page when you place an order with eQuilter. Both of these leaders have supported my activist artwork, and it is always inspiring to share a conversation with them.

Today I also received the current newsletter for Mission of Love (another one of our non-profits) and Kathy Price has very kindly featured an article about eQuilter and a full color image of my artwork, just inside the front page. If you have donated directly to MOL, perhaps you received one of these in the mail also. I am trying to get extra copies for our customers in the near future. It is so uplifting to read about all they have accomplished this year…and Kathy is always an inspiration to me.

I rescued a dog today. I was driving home and I saw a Basset Hound on the curb of the main street that goes from our neighborhood to our warehouse. I parked and jumped out, and engaged the pup until the owner came running out of the house around the corner. At one point 3 more Basset Hounds came running out into the street so that was me and her trying to catch 4 Basset Hounds in the street. You can just imagine. As they all galloped around, it was a lot of flopping ears and bobbling bellies. Thank goodness she got all of them back inside safely!

Quilts, just like musical instruments, have a life of their own that continues after we move on. My mother would be so happy that her piano was delivered to its new home today. It has gone to a friend of the family who is studying piano, and is thrilled to have his own piano in his home now. 50 years of memories vibrate in that instrument, including the years that Mom accompanied me performing cello sonatas and concertos. It was a gift from my grandparents….my grandma played piano too. For awhile there we had 4 pianos in the family and now we are down to 2. Sophie Quinn is studying piano for her Music Ed degree, and she has the electric piano in her apartment. The piano that belonged to Paul’s mom is in our house. So many memories, and so much more music to be made…

The Winter Solstice is on Thursday evening here. It is the longest night and the shortest day of the year, here in the Northern Hemisphere. (Those of you in the Southern Hemisphere….our friends in Australia, New Zealand, South America and Africa…are entering the Summer season.) We seek the peace, the deep hibernation of these long nights, to cocoon and dream of the butterfly we will become, knowing that it is from this place of quiet darkness that a new seed will sprout for the New Year. Wishing you Sweet Dreams and a long Winter’s nap.
