Women’s Voices Being Heard

This evening I have just returned home from the Women’s Voices conference at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock. I attended the artists’ reception Thursday night, and the Women’s Voices summit on Friday. The conference was jam-packed with women on stage and in the audience who are making it their life’s work to raise up women and girls around the world. To say it was inspiring would be…an understatement.

When we heard that they had produced a companion book for the exhibit, I rushed into the Gift Shop to have a look. It took me a moment to realize…my quilt is on the cover! What a thrilling way to start the trip! I ordered 2 cases and they were shipped out Friday so we will have them next week. I will sign the page inside with my quilt. 15 artists were invited to make quilts for this historic exhibit, and we all worked on them throughout the pandemic. (The opening was delayed several times due to the pandemic.) The conference theme was the quote from Sec. Hillary Clinton’s speech at the UN Women’s Conference in 1995 in Beijing – “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” – which was also the theme for my quilt. The conference started with Sec. Clinton making some wonderful enthusiastic remarks about our art quilts, which was quite thrilling for all the artists.

My thanks to Allida Black and Allison Wilbur for organizing this project. To finally be able to celebrate this accomplishment with the other incredible artists, and at the conference, was an amazing celebration. We are all looking for other venues for this show to travel after it closes in April. If you are traveling in Little Rock in the next few months, please do stop to see the exhibit. Hopefully there will be other venues around the country in the near future.

The speaker who touched my heart was Shabana Basij-Rasikh, who has been working to educate Afghani girls despite the Taliban closing schools. Right now there are only 200 girls from Afghanistan being educated, and that is because they were evacuated out of the country when the US left. Her pain regarding a generation of Afghani girls being uneducated…was searing and palpable. She implored us – “Don’t Look Away” – and asked us not to forget about the women in Afghanistan. We also heard about what is happening to girls and women protesting in Iran. The former Prime Minister of Australia spoke to us (Julia Gillard) and the former President of Liberia and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (Ellen Johnson Sirleaf) also spoke. I was surprised to learn that President Sirleaf got her BA at CU Boulder, where Sophie is attending now! Christy Turlington Burns spoke about her non-profit Every Mother Counts, which addresses the high maternal mortality rate in many US states. They are working to educate a new generation of healthcare workers to fill out rural hospitals and birthing centers. The Cherokee delegate to the Congress – Kim TeeHee – also spoke to us about the history of indigenous people which we definitely don’t learn in school.

I left the summit with a thirst for more knowledge on several topics, and a renewed commitment to support girls and young women who are the future of our country and our planet.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

Our kids are grown up now, so we don’t have any starry-eyed kiddos (or sugar-hyped ankle-biters) being tucked in on Christmas Eve. The price of a real Christmas tree has gone up so much that we resorted to a synthetic tree years ago. The boxes of ornaments lovingly collected over the decades, have been tucked in the basement for the last few years. I buy a fresh wreath and hang it near where we used to set up the tree, so we can still enjoy the pine fragrance. We have 3 rescue cats (including one dangerously curious young’un) so I’ve rationalized that a decorated tree these days would be a disaster. The hyper kitty knocks things on the floor and then one of our dogs chews them up. Not a good partnership. But on Christmas Eve I have to get out my ancient copy of “Jolly Old Santa Claus” (from my own childhood) and read through in a whisper, with moist eyes.

The illustrator of this classic book had a huge influence on me as a young artist, although it took awhile for me to realize this. I adored this book, studied the pictures and memorized all the details. (Like finding the cat in every scene.) The day that I realized they were all works of art – illustrations – paintings! – was a huge ephiphany. Wow! I wanted to learn how to make images like that! I wanted to be an artist! I remember it very clearly.

Artist George Hinke came from Germany, to live in Wisconsin, in 1923. He died in Milwaukee in 1953, 5 years before I was born in that town. The reason I bring him up is because so many beautiful Santa Claus illustrations have been inspired by Hinke’s work, and have been reproduced on fabric over the years. There have been so many generations of Hinke-inspired Santas that his original artwork has been obscured. But I remember. I see that twinkle that he put in Santa’s eye, in many contemporary illustrations. If you keep an eye out, you’ll see it too. There’s even a Black Santa with a twinkle!

I always felt that George captured the spirit of Christmas perfectly. The scenes in “Jolly Old Santa Claus” (author Alice Leedy Mason) capture the joy of creating something beautiful that is meant to be given as a loving gift to someone special. That is something that all of us quilters, crafters and makers can relate to. We are all on Santa’s team this time of year, no matter what our faith, because the urge to make and give handmade gifts as we gather with loved ones, is a universal sentiment shared by all who stitch, paint, design and create. Whether you make for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Las Posadas, Omisoka, or New Years…we are celebrating that creative energy that is the source of love and life.

May all of our creative angels bless us with inspiration and ambition as we finish our holiday projects!

Your Free Quilt Pattern – Wolves In The Snow

A family of wolves emerges from the forest on a snowy mountainside, in
this week’s exclusive Free Quilt Pattern. Wolf Medicine reflects the family bonds of the pack, symbolizing loyalty, teamwork, protection and playfulness. Native American lore sees wolves as sacred animals…instinctual and intuitive.

To make this 60″ x 68″ quilt design, you will start with the 24″ x 44″ central panel, with 4 wolves running across a wintery forest background. Cut and piece 3 stone textures and a Hoffman Hand-Dye to make the striking ‘wolf tracks’ in the upper and lower sections.

This beautiful Lap/Nap quilt is a great gift for a Lobo-Phile who dreams of running wild and free! Remember the book written by Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estes – “Women Who Run With the Wolves”?

Here is a quote from this book:
“The doors to the world of the wild are few but precious. If you have a deep scar, that is a door, if you have an old, old story, that is a door. If you love the sky and the water so much you almost cannot bear it, that is a door. If you yearn for a deeper life, a full life, a sane life, that is a door.”

We Are So Blessed

We hope you are having a lovely holiday and weekend, full of good food and loved ones, ready to take on the rest of the holiday season! At our house we always celebrate 2 birthdays the week of Thanksgiving. This year my birthday sound track was this Beatles song! Paul McCartney turned 64 in 2006, and now (at 80 yrs old) concedes that he should have used a higher number when he wrote that song. Maybe “When I’m 84!” would fit the lyrics a little better – ha.

I spent my birthday at the local production of the Nutcracker, and happened to be sitting next to the family of the dancer playing the adult Clara. The star of the show! They had come up from Colorado Springs. They said they knew 2 of the people who were shot and injured at Club Q there last week. Having suffered our own mass shooting in March last year, our hearts go out – again – to those in Colorado Springs and in the Walmart in Virginia. I just don’t even have words anymore. It is everywhere. Everyone I talk to seems to be touched by this madness. It has been 6 months since the Uvalde school shooting.

They are still receiving and distributing quilts to the school community in Uvalde, and we are also still asking for quilts to be sent to those who lost homes in the Florida hurricanes. If you don’t have those addresses from our previous newsletters, contact customer service.

During the holiday season our hearts turn to those who have less, those who have suffered a loss, those who are struggling with illness and poverty. Our long-term partnership with Mission of Love is one you can all be proud of…Kathy Price and her volunteers have just returned from another mission to help the families of Tecpan in Guatemala, distributing 3000 lbs of corn to widows and single mothers there. Wheelchairs and simple toys were distributed. In fact, MOL filled up a C5 plane with another shipment of humanitarian aid, through the Denton program. Together we continue to support a traditional Mayan weaving school for the girls and young women, and now MOL is planning sewing workshops there.

So again, we thank you for the support of our business, so we can continue to support programs here and abroad, for those in need. We are so blessed.

Today we honor the indigenous people of North America, by offering this Free Quilt Pattern with the aboriginal art of “Healing Waters”. Mark Anthony Jacobson is a self taught First Nation artist from Sioux Lookout, Ontario, who currently works and lives in British Columbia.

To make this 53″ x 71″ quilt design, you will start with the 24″ x 44″ large central panel, and then cut and piece the second block panel to create the main layout. Sweet Dreams are Made of…

Have you ever had a lucid dream? Do you dream in full color? Do your dreams feel as real as your waking life? Do you dream about images and colors and designs, to wake up and sketch them out for your next quilt or art project? If so, you can join me because this is the kind of dreaming I’ve been doing since I was a kid…as long as I can remember.

This week I am dreaming of wild animals, and it is overlaid by several wildlife encounters in the last week or two. Today I spotted a bald eagle on a tall tree near our house. We get migrating eagles this time of year, and they stop off at Celestial Seasonings next door for a prairie dog snack. Except…the prairie dogs have been removed to make way for a new development of a few hundred apartments on Celestial’s land. (Which used to be a prairie dog habitat) On the other end of the street, just a few blocks away, they are laying the pipes to service this new neighborhood. When I drive by I think of that Joni Mitchell song….”they paved paradise, and put up a parking lot”.

So the eagles may not be stopping over here much longer. We are still seeing fox, raccoon, owls and hawks, and the occasional bear and bobcat wandering through our rural suburban neighborhood. I worry about their shrinking habitat.

We love this panel with Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It reminds me of…my childhood. I had my first bear encounter around age 10 at summer music camp at the base of Longs Peak. I couldn’t understand why everybody made such a big deal about it. The bear ran one way, and I ran the other way. We had a moment when we locked eyes.

I’ve been dreaming of bears and other wild creatures, ever since. (I really love this rainbow-hued Bear Batik Panel. It reminds me of my bear dreams.)

We are still accepting donated quilts for Florida hurricane victims. Drop them at eQuilter, or ship directly to:

We wish you and your loved ones safe travels for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Your Free Quilt Pattern – Royal Plume Jewels

You’ll be re-writing the definition of ‘holiday blues’ with this luscious Free Quilt Pattern, featuring the opulent Peacock collection from one of our favorite artists – Chong-A Hwang.

To make this 63″ x 81″ quilt design, you will start with the 24″ x 44″ central Peacock panel, with rich shades of Cobalt Blue, Turquoise, and Gold Metallic accents. Cut and piece the crystal-like shapes from the packed Blue/Gold Floral, set in Kona Solid Black, and finish the border with the coordinating floral stripe.

This reminds us of a scene from a midnight garden, with an imperial bejeweled peacock and flourishing peonies glowing in the moonlight. You can almost smell the fragrance of blossoms in the night air….
