Turn Your Clocks Back One Hour Tonight!
I just walked in the door, after flying home from a couple days at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln NE. They have 2 stunning new exhibits on now – “Uncovering Black History” from the collection of Dr Carolyn Mazloomi (we are a sponsor), and “Water Featured” from the John M. Walsh Collection. I am also enjoying the photos many of you are posting from the Houston Quilt Festival, including images of the special exhibits we sponsored. We hope you enjoyed the quilts and the show!

Once we get past this contentious election cycle, we can really start to prepare for the holiday season. Going to a quilt festival or quilt exhibit always gets my creative juices flowing. I’ve been busy sketching and taking notes and hopefully can get back into the studio soon. I know many of you are busy making Christmas gifts, and some of you are making items to sell at craft fairs. Table-Runners and Pillowcases have been popular ‘quick and easy’ holiday gift items, and of course you know about our Free Quilt Pattern e-newsletters with more ‘quick and easy’ quilt projects for those of you who just never seem to have enough time.

This is “peak” holiday fabric season for serious fabric collectors, and we have 500 holiday fabrics currently in stock for your Fall/Winter sewing projects. Many of these seasonal products are “One-and-Done” because the manufacturers do not reprint, so if you fall in love with something I recommend you snap it up. We do try to restock popular seasonal items but it is hit-or-miss.

If you are living in a state with Daylight Savings, tonight is the night to turn your clock back one hour and get an EXTRA HOUR OF SLEEP! Woo hooo!

Be a Force for Good

Lately, amidst all the bad news and polarization happening in the world around us, I’ve been searching for a way to be a Force for Good in the World. I’ve been trying to do this for a long time now, but I feel like I need to up my game. I’ve been thinking about the Gandhi quote – “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Turning away from the bad news doesn’t work for me, but taking a break for a week up North was a good thing. I came back with a clearer head, more centered and peaceful. I can’t fix the world all by myself, but I can stay committed to being part of the change.

I know this is on many of your minds too…because you tell me. I hear from you via email, Facebook messages, and text messages. I think mothers and fathers in particular are thinking about how they can engage in the process of healing the world, for the sake our all our children. Yes these are things that I think about (try to meditate on, instead of worry about….) just like many of you.

For myself, I have made a commitment to make art that tells a story, and hopefully invites people to think about these same questions, and think about what they can do for peace and healing. I am not hopeless, because this desire for peace and healing is huge. We all feel it. Well, almost all of us.

So every week when I write to you, I hope to make you smile, to inspire you, to give you courage to try something new and maybe speak up for someone without a voice and without power. You may be sewing charity quilts. You may be protesting at a climate conference. You may be volunteering at a nursing home or school. You may be giving a caretaker a much-needed break. We are all doing what we can. And hey, someday we may need help too.

Through the quilting community I have found my tribe of people who also value love, peace, and healing. Wherever I go, there you are. Knowing you are there is what helps me get through those challenging times. I know you know what I mean.

I have uploaded several images from my polar bear trip on my photo pages here. My goal for this trip was to see a Snowy Owl, and you’ll see I did manage to capture a few images from afar.

Congratulations to Kathy Bieltz who won our October Autumn/Harvest themed Facebook challenge. We are planning another challenge/contest with $50 gift certificate prizes on our Facebook page, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and share your projects made with eQuilter fabrics!

If you are in Houston at the Quilt Festival this week, please be sure to check out the winner of the eQuilter Mastery Award, and the 3 special exhibits we are sponsoring. (You’ll see 2 of my quilts in the Washington DC exhibit.) Congratulations to all the winners in Houston this year!

This week I will be at the Intl Quilt Museum in Lincoln Nebraska at events on Thursday and Friday evenings. I hope to see many of you there.

Free Quilt Pattern – Sea Turtle Reef

Tonight we bring you this peaceful scene, featuring the underwater world of the Sea Turtle.

We are offering this popular Free Quilt Pattern again, now back in stock, by popular demand. These gentle creatures glide silently through the water, nibbling algae and occasionally bobbing to the surface for a breath of air.

To make this 69″ x 63″ quilt design, you will start with the central 35″ x 44″ scenic turtle panel…shimmering with beautiful digital-printed colors & detail. We’ve added a Turtle Stripe and 2 coordinates to create the border. This is a quick and easy quilt design that will delight anyone who loves and protects these endangered creatures.

Turtles have been part of legends and spirituality around the world, and are associated with indigenous creation stories. In the cosmological myths of many cultures a Great Turtle carries the weight of the world upon its back. In several religions, mythology and folklore, turtles symbolize wisdom, long life, and resolute tranquillity.

Spooky Chocoholic Season

All Our Finest Quilt Backing is on now sale at 20% off!

Sunday is the last day of Our Designer & Holiday Fabric Sales.
Don’t miss these savings at 45% off.

We hope you are having a fun weekend preparing for Halloween. Judging by the amount of Halloween, Day of the Dead and Skeleton fabrics we’ve sold (Black Cats are a favorite!) – I imagine many of you are putting the finishing touches on a new Halloween quilt or other project this weekend! We are having a party and costume contest at eQuilter on Monday, and as in years past, we’ll be sharing photos of our creative crew next week.

This also means that it is the start of CHOCOLATE SEASON at eQuilter! We’ve received our first shipment of chocolates, and many of these are limited edition holiday special items. (which means they are not re-orderable.) Snag the ones that look good, and in about a week we’ll be adding your old favorites from last year. In case you don’t know about the eQuilter Chocolate Program, you too can be a member of this special club. It is not unusual for us to get orders for 6 or 10 chocolate bars, and a spool of thread. Remember, what happens at eQuilter stays at eQuilter….i.e. we won’t tell if you are a fellow chocoholic.

We’ll be prioritizing orders with chocolate this week, so you’ll get them in time for Election Day. Whenever I travel I always carry an emergency bar of chocolate. This is because 20 years ago I was in a shuttle that got caught in a snowstorm on the way from Reno Airport, over the pass to Art Quilt Tahoe…except our shuttle slid off the road into a snow-bank and the only food we had between the 6 of us was an eQuilter chocolate bar. That is how I met Terrie Mangat! I didn’t have to use my emergency chocolate bar last week for the Churchill Polar Bear trip, but I might have to for this next week before elections. My other coping mechanism is simple: Go into the studio and play with beautiful fabrics! Brings down my blood pressure every time. *smile*

I am adding photos to my Churchill Polar Bear photo pages this weekend, so take a peek at some of the images from my Arctic adventure! Also – I did a little video on our Facebook page Friday showing some new fabrics and polar bear photos – check it out!

Polar Dreams

Tonight I’ve been home from my polar bear trip for 24 hours, and I am still reviewing my photos and memories from this experience. During our days out on the polar rover, we saw a Snowy Owl, Arctic Hares, White Ptarmigans, Arctic Foxes, Silver Foxes, Muskrats, Ravens, Blue Heron, Caribou and Wolves. We went dog-sledding in the boreal forest, and oh yeah, and we saw several polar bears too! I won’t say we saw lots of bears. This was my 6th trip to Churchill over the last 9 years, and essentially I feel like I am documenting the demise of the polar bears.

Our guides kept expressing surprise and concern at the migrating birds who “shouldn’t still be here” – i.e. normally this time of year these migrating birds would be long gone. Locals were surprised they were still seeing caribou this time of year, for the same reason. However a big snowstorm hit up there the morning after we left, so hopefully that will hasten the winter season onto the tundra…so the ice will freeze and the bears can get out on the bay to feed.

I was worried that my group wouldn’t see many bears, but we did end up having some wonderful close up encounters with bears. Some bears are skittish, some are goofy, some just want to be left alone, some are really sleepy, and some seem to enjoy hanging out near our vehicle and putting on a show. That was the case with this female bear (above), whom we named “Lunch Bear” because she stayed next to us for a couple hours while we had lunch. She rolled around in the willows and grasses, doing yoga stretches and then sitting up and gazing at us, and we watched her in silent delight.

I’ll be sharing photos from my trip on my photo pages here. Give me a few days to review and edit the images before I upload later this week, but you can check out photos from previous trips here now.
