Quilting for Mental Health

This weekend I am at a Fall Quilt Retreat with our state guild – CQC – the Colorado Quilting Council. I have always wanted to take a class on Pineapple Quilt Blocks so I would not have to start from scratch to figure out how to make them. So I’ll be paper-piecing itsy bitsy fabric strips this weekend, and probably coming up with my own version of the technique, just because…

My very first quilt class in 1991 was a Log Cabin class on a Saturday. Of course my degree and job experience was in the garment industry, so I picked it up pretty fast. At the end of the day the other students were barely finishing their 2nd block, and I had finished a small quilt. The teacher came over, looked at my work, and said “I think you are a quilter!”

“I know!” I said. I was so excited to have found quilting. I am still excited to be part of this wonderful community of makers. The day I found the quilting tribe was the day I knew I had come home. As the pandemic ebbs, and we begin to gather in person again, there is nothing like getting and giving hugs with fellow quilters. Last night we had a trunk show from the visiting Pineapple instructor, and we all oohed and aahed at her tiny paper-pieced blocks that were set into her larger pieced quilts. She explained that when she finishes a big quilt, she saves all the little scraps, and makes another smaller scrappy quilt with the leftovers. Her miniature scrappy leftover quilts were little masterpieces!

This is a great idea as we move closer to the holiday season. Maybe you would like to make table runners and pieced placemats for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners? Make each one different, and then invite your guests to take them home. One woman’s placemat is another one’s decorative mat on a dresser or side table. I have vintage textiles from my grandmother in my bedroom and living room, under objets d’art and other collectibles. I try to place a precious collectible textile under my travel tchotchkes around the house. If you are not sure if someone would appreciate a quilt for a gift, this is a way to test the waters to see if they appreciate your handmade gifts.

But in the end, we make quilts for ourselves. Yes they may go to someone precious as a gift of love, but we crave the process of choosing the fabric, organizing our stash, cutting and sewing, and the supreme pleasure of taking that final stitch on the binding. That process is a contemplative exercise that leads us to a place of peace and focus, which is so needed in today’s chaotic world, right? I have always made art, and stitched quilts, for my mental health. I am a better person by the time I finish a quilt.

Hope for a Cure

In 2023 eQuilter will reach an important milestone:
We have raised over $1.9 million for charity in our 23 years, and next year we will reach $2 million total raised. We could not do it without you, and we humbly thank you for your support over the years.

One of our most popular charities is raising money for research to fight Breast Cancer. Both of our mothers were breast cancer survivors. My mother is now in a nursing home, and we lost Paul’s mom a few years ago. In addition to our mothers, we of course have so many friends who have fought this disease over the years. Some won the fight, some did not, and some are still engaged in the battle. For those of you still fighting for your health, we re-dedicate ourselves to finding a cure.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. eQuilter has donated $330K to breast cancer research over the years, with your help.

In case you missed the Wednesday e-newsletter, we are starting a comfort quilt drive for those who lost their homes in Florida due to the the hurricane. eQuilter and Mission of Love have now collected and distributed over 17,000 of your donated quilts to those in need over the years. If you wish to contribute for this quilt drive…..

Ship to:
Mission of Love
Marta Ockuly
1280 Tree Bay Lane
Sarasota, FL 34242

If you are local to eQuilter, you may *drop off* donated quilts at our office in Boulder. (Please do not ship to us. This will delay distribution.) Ship directly to the Florida address above.

Please do not call Mission of Love. If you have a question, call us. We will answer any questions.

Thank you for supporting our family-owned business. Your support allows us to make a difference together, from disaster relief to medical research. Together, with your help, we are a force for Good in the world.

Autumn Leaves & Moose

This week I took a photo trip up to the Colorado Rocky Mountains, to capture the turning colors of our alpine forests. The shimmering golden aspen leaves against our cobalt blue skies is an annual celebration of color, deepening our appreciation of Nature. On our day at Rocky Mountain National Park, we had sunshine, rain, lightning, hail, and snow. We saw elk, and at the end of the day a magical gift – this young bull moose curled up and taking a nap in a meadow just off the road. When he lifted his head to glance at us for a moment, I snapped this image. What a gift.

Our hearts are breaking as we see photos of the destruction in Florida. Yes we are starting a comfort quilt drive for those who have lost their homes there, in partnership with Mission of Love. Please ship your donated quilts directly to this Mission of Love coordinator in Florida. Kathy Price will be taking a truck of relief supplies down to Florida to distribute supplies and your donated quilts, so please send them off sooner rather than later.

Please do not call Mission of Love. If you have a question, call us. We will answer any questions.

We encourage you to put a label on the quilt with your name, and a message of encouragement and love for the recipients.

Northcott’s ‘Tea for Two’ is the most amazing Tea collection ever!

Autumn Skye’s visionary artwork has dazzling Southwest themes.

Polar Frost by Jody Bergsma is a breathtaking view of polar bears.

I hope you took a peek at the Tea for Two collection – we are so excited to have a beautiful Vintage Teatime group of fabrics now in stock! I have been previewing Quilt Market releases from several companies the last few weeks, and you have probably seen me grumble about an over-saturation of cartoon artwork in the quilt industry the last several years. We are always on the lookout for luscious detailed artwork that shows the talent and exceptional craft from the most talented designers. That’s why we still look at about 150,000 products per year, to pick out our exceptionally cherry-picked group of eQuilter products for our customers who also have an appreciation for high quality artwork. We are now curating our selection of fabrics that will be shipping in early 2023.

In a couple weeks I’ll be headed North for my Polar Bear tour, with an intrepid group of quilters and crafters who are joining me. I hope to capture some stunning images of the bears, to share with you around November 1st. In the meantime you can enjoy photos of bears from previous trips, on my photo pages.

Sophie Quinn got into the pit orchestra for the CU production of La Boheme, and she is so excited! However it is the same weekend that I’ll be up in Churchill on the edge of the Arctic Circle. Darn! But I am excited that our shared love of opera and classical music has led her to this great experience. I have many fond memories of being ‘in the pit’ from my musician days. She calls me after the rehearsals, bubbling with excitement.

For all of you dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, we hope you and your home and family, your cats and dogs, your sewing machine and your stash, all made it through the storm ok. Big hugs to all of you dealing with the stress of the aftermath. We are donating to hurricane relief for your communities.

I have just now been in touch with Kathy Price at Mission of Love. We are putting together a relief effort for Florida. Please ship your donated comfort quilts directly to her in Ohio, unless you can drop them off in person at our office. (Do NOT ship to our office please.)

Mission of Love

Remember, do not call Kathy. If you have a question, call us.
Thank you for your concern and your generosity.

Freedom from Taiji

Last week I attended a SAQA conference in San Diego. On Thursday night we all went over to a reception at the Visions Art Museum, and then walked a block to see the regional SAQA exhibit “Threads of Inspiration”.

This quilt by Lys Axelson really captured my activist heart. It is called “Freedom from Taiji” and captures the moment when some of the dolphins are escaping the deadly round-up. Having just given a talk about Art and Activism earlier in the day, I think many of us were attuned to the message put forth by the artist.

This is not your typical flat rectangle quilt. Look closely and you will see the undulating shapes on the bottom hem. Look closer and you will see that the dolphins stand out from the background, with a subtle 3-D effect, making the whole piece come alive. (Image of the quilt is bracketed by one of our current multicolor Fish and Coral Reef prints.)

To all of our friends in the path of Hurricane Ian, we are thinking of you and hoping you can stay safe on high ground. I experienced a severely destructive typhoon in the early 1980s while living in Hong Kong, so I have a lot of empathy for those of you with homes in the path of the storm.
