Quilt Backing Bonanza

You know every Wednesday I try to bring you some Eye Candy to give your creative juices a boost midweek. This week I want to share one of my favorite quilts from Danny Amazonas’ gallery at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. (You can see all the quilts in his gallery, plus many others, at this link.) I’ve known Danny and his wife Pat for many years now, in fact you might enjoy this video interview we did at the Tokyo Quilt Festival in 2016.

Danny’s monumental collage quilts were very popular in Birmingham, and I was excited to view so many new pieces since I’ve seen him last, especially this Tiger portrait (above) and the huge underwater scene. You will notice (especially in our casual video) that he loves to use the bold prints from the Kaffe Fassett Collective and Philip Jacobs.

Danny and I have much in common and we always have lots to talk about, because we both lived in New York, we are avid travelers, and of course the time I lived in Asia gives us much to discuss. On top of that he is just a really nice human being and has a great passion for his creative work. He and Pat have visited our office (pre-pandemic) and we’ve met up at many shows around the world. He is one of the great talents of our quilt art movement.

As you know, I love meeting up with fellow quilters and artists at events around the world. Tomorrow I am flying to San Diego and will be speaking about Art and Activism at the SAQA conference Thursday, and eQuilter is hosting the reception at the Visions Museum of Textile Art that evening. I know I will see many of the art quilt tribe at that event. I hope you’ve been able to get out this summer and enjoy some quilt exhibits and festivals. It is good for the creative soul!

Free Quilt Pattern – Little Ones

This week’s Free Quilt Pattern captures sweet portraits of woodland creatures, in soft neutral tones. The central image of the newborn Fawn has particularly stolen our hearts.

To make this 52″ x 60″ quilt design (perfect for a new baby!) you will start with the 24″ x 44″ panel. Use the 2nd block panel to make the side sections. Then use the coordinating woodland stripe and Kona Solid “Doeskin” to create the border.

To make this extra snuggly, you might consider a Flannel backing.

This is a Quick and Easy quilt project for an upcoming birth or baby shower!

Houston Winners – SAQA Summit in San Diego

We have so many new products every week, it is hard to stuff everything in this weekly New Product newsletter. If you love cheerful Thirties prints (who doesn’t?!), I want to make sure you don’t miss all of the “Picture Perfect” precuts that came in this week – by American Jane for Moda.

This coming week I am traveling to the SAQA Summit in San Diego, to speak about Art and Activism. I will also be at the reception Thursday night, at the Visions Museum of Textile Art. Hope to see several of you there!

The winners of the International Quilt Festival in Houston were just announced, and we want to give a special congratulations to Roberta Lagomarsini, the winner of the $5000 eQuilter Master Award for Contemporary Artistry. Because the winners were announced so early, it means that there will not be an awards ceremony on Tuesday night before Festival opens. (In case you were wondering.)

In addition to sponsoring the $5K Master Award, eQuilter is also sponsoring these special exhibits:
A Celebration of Color
Deeds Not Words
Inspired by Washington DC (I have 2 quilts in this exhibit!)
Follow this link to our blog, for more information.

It has been a bit of an emotional roller coaster week. After attending a funeral early this week, I found out another friend had died, but then heard that my international opera singer friend is at Carnegie Hall in November. (He debuted at the Met last Fall.) So we take life one day at a time, and celebrate when we can. I am sure you can relate.

I have posted more photos from my trip to England last month.

You may enjoy these recent photos of travel and quilts.

Free Quilt Pattern – Christmas Cuddles

This week’s Free Quilt Pattern captures a sweet Christmas Eve scene, with two children and a puppy, sitting in front of a cozy fireplace next to a Christmas tree. The details in the central panel are what makes this special – from the little girl’s carefully braided hair – to the colored lights reflected in the gleaming wood floor – and the 4 embellished stockings hanging from the mantle.

To make this 60″ x 54″ quilt design, you will start with the exquisitely detailed 36″ x 44″ central panel. The inset starry blocks are set on point in a white snow-textured print.

This charming quilt may remind you of Christmas past, but will definitely be an heirloom for future holidays as well!

Free Quilt Pattern – Sea Turtle Journey

Back in Stock – by popular demand!

This endangered Sea Turtle is gliding peacefully through sun-dappled waters, to remind us of how precious clean water is to all living things.
#WaterIsLife

If you’ve been lucky enough to have an encounter with one of these gentle creatures, when snorkeling or beach-combing, you know that they have a special presence and seem to emanate an ancient wisdom. Indeed, some indigenous cultures’ creation stories have the world riding on the back of a Sea Turtle.

To make this 69″ x 63″ Nature-themed quilt, you will start with the 35″ x 44″ underwater scenic panel. Use our exclusive “Turtles on the Beach” stripe to create the border. This quilt brings a dreamy vibe to a room, as a wall-hanging. As a Nap/Lap quilt, you’ll be gliding through tropical waters in your sweet dreams as you sleep under this quilt.

Flowers for Tony

This weekend was our local Dahlia Club’s glorious exhibition at a local greenhouse, and I couldn’t wait to go see what monster blossoms these botanic aficionados would put on display this year. It is one of my favorite late summertime excursions…and it did not disappoint.

Unfortunately it corresponded with some heart-wrenching news, about an old family friend who was killed by a speeding truck as he walked from his house to the neighborhood coffeehouse. Today I attended the funeral and it was very difficult. The slide show of their family photos were photos from my childhood because I grew up with this extended family. We lost the matriarch recently – at 101 she was still one of my mother’s best and oldest friends.

I babysat for Tony’s kids in the seventies. They adopted 2 beautiful brown babies which was unheard of in this white community back then. He was a photographer, and a Quaker, and a genuine friendly optimist. Like me, he enjoyed striking up a conversation with a stranger. So as I heard the family remembering him and telling stories, it felt like even more of a loss.

But then, I know he would prefer us to celebrate his life, rather than mourn his loss. If you have lost someone in the last few years, I know you can relate to the surprise of these intense mixed feelings. So from the photos I took at the Dahlia show, I dedicate this image to Tony. He loved hiking to the top of our Colorado Fourteeners with his camera equipment, trying to capture that feeling of being on top of the world. I hope he’s up on that mountaintop now, seeing past the limitless horizon of the Universe…and smiling.

Every day is a Gift.

Your Free Quilt Pattern – Spirits Of The Wind

Tonight we are sending out this stunning piece of artwork with rich Fall colors,
as our exclusive Free Quilt Pattern – featuring the dramatic imagery of a galloping horse and a gliding Bald Eagle with molten clouds and a fiery sun as a backdrop.

To make this 56″ x 63″ quilt design, you will start with the finely detailed 36″ x 44″ panel. Use the indigenous geometric stripe, with warm earthtone cloud coordinates, to create the border. This is a quick and easy project, and makes a great gift for someone who would love the visual metaphor of ‘Wild and Free‘ that is communicated by this powerful image.

The news of the loss of Queen Elizabeth has dominated the airwaves in the last couple days, and it is definitely the end of a very long second Elizabethan era. At 96 years old, she had a long life and long career of service, and we can only wonder at how the world has changed since she suddenly became the heir apparent when the king abdicated for Wallis. If you have been watching The Crown over these last several years, you have just a tiny inside glimpse of the Royal Family…but we will never really have known her because she was so stoic and such an enigma. All I could think of today was…now she can finally rest.

I am so happy and proud to announce that my art quilt “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” is part of the “Women’s Voices, Women’s Votes, Women’s Rights” exhibit opening at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock this weekend. It will be open through April. It was exciting to see the iconic pink suit that Secretary Hillary Clinton wore for this famous speech, is in the display case right next to my artwork. I hope that if you are in the area in the next 6 months, you will stop to see this amazing exhibit which combines textile art and a history of Women’s Rights in America. I am so honored to have been invited to create a piece for this project. Congratulations to all the other artists who are part of this presentation.

On this same page you will now see both of my art quilts in the “Inspired by our Nations Capital” exhibit and companion book. These 2 quilts (The White House, and the Folger Library Reading Room) will be in this exhibit which is premiering at the Houston Quilt Festival this year.

Next week I am traveling to the SAQA Summit in San Diego, to speak about being an artist activist and curator. This week I have a conference call with the Endangered Species Coalition about a collaboration. (After our meeting in Wash DC in July) My work always has a story, for those who are open to the stitched messages.

Perhaps you too are seeing your quilts exhibited, or you are sharing your work (finally) in person at your local guild’s Show and Tell. For those of us who kept working on our projects through the pandemic, this is a wonderful time to finally be able to share our work in person. Now we prepare for the winter sewing season, and think about our projects for 2023!

I do have ONE spot that just opened up in my Polar Bear trip next month! Call our agent Aly if you want to be spontaneous and snag that spot!

We appreciate your support of our family business, our charity program, and the opportunity to provide fabrics and services for your next project. We have received so much love and appreciation from our customers throughout these challenging years, and we want to let you know that we love you too! Big hugs!
