Leftover Weekend

Sometimes making art is a struggle. This is what I’ve been going through the last several weeks. I packed up my whole studio for a construction job that was supposed to take a week. We are going into week 4 and I am cycling through phases of horror, determination, terror, and necessity-being-the-mother-of-invention. This weekend I am finishing painting my 54″ fiberglass bear in a little corner of my studio, among the boxes and tarps. We are waiting for a city inspector to come and do a @#$% screw inspection. I am not making this up. So please send prayers to the Artist Angels because I need to have my studio back next week!

December 1st is on the near horizon, which means
Christmas and New Years and 2022 are on a not-too-distant horizon. Another strange year is winding to an end, and somehow we quilters and makers have stitched and zoomed our way through another year that would have been unimaginable 2 years ago. Through it all we have found ways to take classes and attend lectures online, share our quilt projects online, and even having quilting bees online. (Often with a lot of coffee, wine, and hysterical giggling.)

Through it all we’ve discovered what and whom are most precious. We’ve switched gears to become homebodies. We have found time to do things with our family that we wouldn’t have had if we were traveling and going out. We’ve pushed the Pause button, grieved what we lost, then moved on to focus on what we DO have with a renewed sense of appreciation and gratitude.

What am I grateful for? At the moment I am grateful that we had the idea to start an ONLINE business in 1998, which opened to the public in March of 1999. Our Online Roots run deep. I remember very clearly when my best friend from childhood (PhD in Immunology from Stanford, Law Degree from Berkeley, Genome Project, tenured professor and general over-achiever) told me about the internet in the late 80s. I tried to imagine what she meant by “going to a webpage” but I just didn’t get it until I saw it for myself, and then the spark was lit. Then I married a brilliant guy who was designing webpages…a match made in heaven. And the rest is eQuilter history.

Just in case you missed this…
I am doing ONE MORE POLAR BEAR TRIP next year. Details on this page.
Our deadline has been extended and they are giving me the chance to fill up the bus with quilters and fabriholics, and we have just a few more seats open.

Happy Thanksgiving

As we gather with friends and loved ones for a Thanksgiving meal tomorrow, we take the time to look back on this year with gratitude.

We focus on what we have, and count our blessings in this moment. Whatever challenges we have faced in the last year, we put them aside and cherish the ones with whom we gather to break bread.

The things we value now are perhaps simple but more precious. Having the time to prepare a meal, being able to sit down in person with family, and appreciating the abundance that is before us….that is the gift and the message of this holiday.

One of the gifts we all savor is the ability to sit down with fabric, needle and thread, and take some time for ourselves during a busy holiday season. When we take time to create, we are nurturing ourselves…and often what we make is for the comfort and healing of others. Every stitch is a prayer, when our quilt is for someone who is marking a turning point in their lives. As quilters, we are there to celebrate and document these moments. Don’t forget to put labels on the quilts you make – it will make your work even more precious to the generations that follow.

We wish you a peaceful and blessed holiday with those you love, and we express our humble gratitude for sharing our vision as this year winds to an end.

Gratitude Week

Despite supply chain issues in our industry, I am always amazed that our buying team is able to keep a steady stream of beautiful new products arriving each week. I look at about 150,000 new products per year, and order around 14,000 which are introduced in our weekly e-newsletters that go out to 120,000 subscribers. We are so proud (and relieved) that we’ve been able to stay open and keep shipping thousands of packages every month, thanks to our fantastic warehouse team. As we approach this week of Thanksgiving, I just want to express our deep appreciation for our awesome employees who are truly part of this TEAM effort…providing this service to our customers around the world.

As our way of thanking YOU, we do not bombard you with obnoxious Black Friday emails. I think you know what I mean. This year more than ever, we appreciate the things that are most important in life. After I left the garment industry and found my way to the quilting industry, I felt so blessed to have found my way to this sisterhood/brotherhood/tribe that is so generous and welcoming. This time of year so many of you are making quilts and sewing gifts for the holiday season. There is really nothing like a handmade gift to show how much you love someone.

When we started this business we never dreamed that it could be part of something so much bigger…to raise money for conservation issues, breast cancer, orphans, and disaster relief. We have just passed another milestone – a total of $1.85 million raised for charity – which means next year we will reach $1.9 million. Now I can start to see that huge milestone of $2 million on the horizon, and I just want you to know that every one of you who have supported us over the years can lay claim to being part of this incredible Force for Good that we have created TOGETHER. I am humbled and filled with gratitude, for what we’ve done together, and I invite you to click through the links on our charity page to learn more about the work each of our carefully vetted non-profit recipients are doing, and what they are accomplishing, with our help and yours.

Your Free Quilt Pattern – Owl Arabesque

It is a rare pleasure when a stunningly talented fine artist crosses over onto the quilting scene with their licensed artwork being translated onto fabric, but David Galchutt is one of those creative unicorns who has burst onto the scene in the last year. When we saw his illustrations in 2020 for the first time, we knew that all of you were going to love his work as much as we do!

To make this 61″ x 66″ eQuilter exclusive quilt design, you will start with the horizontal 24″ x 44″ digital-printed panel. We’ve added David’s owl and paisley coordinates, plus 2 Hoffman Hand-Dyes and a Stonehenge texture…to create this pieced wall-hanging that will bring warmth and smiles wherever it lands.

Beary Good News

Today I got some Beary Good News!

We have 9 people who have signed up in the last week for my Peak Season Polar Bear trip, so they are giving me the chance to fill up the entire Polar Rover with more Quilters and Fiber-holics! If we can fill up the whole Polar Bear bus that means it will be the PARTY Bear Bus!

So if you’ve been fiddling about whether to get in on this trip, NOW is the time to call our trip specialist Aly and put down a deposit to secure your seat on the bus. Payment plans are available which is very helpful. And if you like the idea of going on a trip where everyone is vaccinated and you can feel safe and enjoy yourself, we’d love to have you!

Plus you get a packet of POLAR BEAR FABRIC as part of the deal!

Just to add to the fun, I’ve added photos to both my Polar Bear Album, and my Katmai Brown Bear Album. I am also painting/embellishing a 54″ fiberglass bear over the next few weeks, that will be part of an outdoor Winter public art exhibit at Chautauqua Park here in Boulder. My goodness, there is a lot of Bear Energy happening around here right now!

The photo above is from my last trip to Churchill in 2019. This big boy hung out near our Polar Rover for quite a long time…walking all around us and then finally settling in the willows just below us. The bears are very curious about us too!

Many thanks to Visions Art Museum and the Handweavers Guild of Boulder, who hosted my lectures in the last several days. It is such a comfort and pleasure to share time with my peeps and talk about our mutual passion for Creativity and COLOR.

Your Free Quilt Pattern – Moon Child

This sweetly encouraging quilt design combines fabrics from different designers to create an optimistic message in a tender comforting quilt. Perhaps someone you know could use a hug and a supportive quilt like this?

To make this heart-warming 52″ x 52″ quilt design, you will start with a 24″ x 44″ central panel, then cut up a 2nd block panel and piece with the pastel blue starry print. Finish with a soft yellow star print for the border, and you have a special gift that expresses your care for a loved one.

Holidays on the Horizon

Today I picked a bowl full of vine-ripened tomatoes, and even more that had been blown off by the wind onto the ground. We still have not had our first snow here which is ….creepy. My mom’s nursing home just shut down again due to positive cases, which is so depressing. However I have 2 big art projects and deadlines to keep me busy. The wall is up in the studio so I hope to move in and get re-settled again soon. Once I am all set up in the new studio space, I will see what kind of classes we can host here in the future. Fingers crossed!

This last week was the International Summit for the Color Marketing Group, where we spent 2 days reviewing the trends and color palettes developed by members through regional collaborations over the last 6 months. If last year was about separation and isolation, this upcoming year will be about *Connecting*, and the colors that support that topic. I am grateful to be a part of the international color/trend forecasting organization, and to interact with designers in other industries, as we all try to make sense of what the future holds.

Our color palettes are always informed and inspired by these color trend forecasts, and although I can’t share the results of the CMG 2023 forecast (members only ) I can promise you that we will use this information to maintain a cutting edge on color trends here at eQuilter, as always…

Thanksgiving is in 12 days and if you are like me, you are still trying to get your brain wrapped around it being November already. We are working hard to keep all of our categories well stocked so you can find what you need before the Winter Sewing Season sets in. Yes we have seen supply chain issues but we have many resources so we just keep calling until we find what we know you will need. We have a team of Santa’s Elves here in the Buying department who take their job very seriously.

Just in case you missed the Wednesday newsletter…
I am doing ONE MORE POLAR BEAR TRIP next year and the deadline to grab a guaranteed spot in my group is Thursday, November 18. Details on this page.
