Free eQuilter Pattern – Mama Bear and Cub

In honor of Fat Bear Week we are continuing the Bear theme in
tonight’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern, capturing an intimate moment between a Mama Bear and her Cub. Sunlight filters through the forest, to illuminate this precious scene from Nature, set in a coordinating pieced border.

To make this 54″ x 62″ quilt design, you will start with the gorgeous artwork by Abraham Hunter, in this 32″ x 44″ digital-printed scenic panel. Fussy cut smaller bear vignettes to make the on-point diamonds, to make the top and bottom border. The outer border is a coordinate print of leaves on the forest floor. This one is for all you Mama Bears out there….you know who you are!

Where the Wild Things Are

You may have seen “Fat Bear Week” in the news this week. It is a lighthearted contest to vote on the most blubbery brown bear in Alaska here at the end of the salmon fishing season. If you read about Fat Bear Week, you might have clicked through to the Live Bearcam, where you can watch a live video-stream of the bears fishing at Brooks Falls and other favorite fish-laden rivers in Alaska. The salmon season will be over shortly and the bears will waddle into a semi-hibernation when all the food is gone.

If you look at the Live Bearcam, this is where I was standing 10 days ago, and I know many of those bears by name. However I promised to share a story with you from this trip, and here it is:

On our last full day in Katmai National Park, we groggily trundled down to the chilly Gear Shed at the lodge, to get fit for waders. As I pulled on these rubbery waterproof overalls, which were frozen stiff from the cold, I felt stupidly clumsy. We climbed in a van and drove to the riverside ‘airport’ to climb up a thin metal ladder into a Float Plane that would take us to our remote and very secret destination in the wilderness. 45 minutes later we circled the mouth of a shallow river that dumped into a lake. As we cruised in for a landing, we saw there were bears everywhere.

We exited the plane in our waders, and sloshed through the water to a little island in the river. The island had tall tufts of grass, that hid anything in the center of the island. Our guide had to take a look and make sure there wasn’t a bear sleeping next to us in the grass.

We settled in as a ‘clump’ just in case a bear got too curious or aggressive, so we would look like one big animal. It didn’t take long for the show to begin. A shy young mama bear with 2 little spring cubs made her way up the shore just next to us, a teenage (sub-adult) bear peeked through the grass on the island adjacent to us, and a huge male bear started to make his way down the river, catching and chomping salmon as he slowly was carried downstream.

All day long we had about 30 bears making their way up or down the river all around us, and we could always see 5 or even 10 bears at any time, in the water in the distance or up close, and on the shores. The highlight of the day was when a very relaxed big mama bear made her way to our island with her 3 little spring cubs. She fished in the river right in front of us, as the cubs played all around us. Twice the cubs walked right in front of us, a foot or two away from us, making their way along the shore to catch up with Mama. We held our breath.

In the middle of the afternoon, Mama Bear laid down to take a nap just behind us on our tiny island. She was hidden by the tall grasses but we could hear her breathing. Then the cubs began to play, loudly squealing, growling, chuffing and snarling. It was hair-raising, but thrilling. Our guide explained that some older mama bears have figured out that since the male bears avoid humans, the mama can be around quiet gentle humans because it is safer for their cubs.

I am sure this story is alarming to many of you, if you have not read my previous emails. During the salmon run season, the bears can eat up to 90,000 calories a day, and they are so well fed that they have no interest in eating or chasing humans, unless we are loud and stupid. However, don’t try to do this on your own! Go with an experienced guide who will take you to the right place at the right time, and who has a deep understanding of bear behavior.

We stood in our Human Clump, held our collective breath, whispered in the softest of voices, and had perhaps the most magical day of our entire lives.

This is one of my photos as 2 of the 3 cubs walked past us in our last hour in this secret valley. The cubs looked us in the eye and just walked on by, safe in the protection of their mother and their human babysitters.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every year we feature Pink Ribbon collections that are fundraisers for Breast Cancer Research, and as you know you can also choose this as your 2% donated to charity when you finalize a purchase at eQuilter. In our 22 year history, out of the $1.8 million raised so far, over $320K has been donated directly from eQuilter to Breast Cancer research and patient support.

You may not know why this cause is so close to our hearts. Paul and I are both committed to this cause because both of our mothers were BC survivors, but also because we have known SO many friends, co-workers, and community members affected by this disease. There is more information coming out to the public about the causes, but we know that toxic contamination can be one of the triggers. I lost a dear friend recently to breast cancer, and I now have 2 friends in the middle of their battle. Because this is a mostly-female industry, we have known so many in the quilt industry who have fought this battle.

So this month we honor all of you who have been affected by breast cancer, and we commit to continue our support to NBCF to find a cure. To those of you fighting BC now, we send our love and a big long supportive hug.

Paul’s mom lived to 92, and my mom is still a survivor 38 years after her diagnosis. The treatments today are so much better than what our mothers had to endure, and we know that research into targeted treatments are yielding great advancements in neutralizing BC. Thanks for being part of these success stories, with your support of our charity program.

Postcard from Katmai

I am writing to you from Anchorage Alaska tonight, before I head to the airport to catch a midnight Red-Eye flight back to Colorado. My week here in Alaska has been a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience, but to Alaska residents it is just a part of life here to encounter bears and moose, and wake up surrounded by snowy peaks. It snowed the day before I arrived, and cold windy weather was predicted, but we were incredibly fortunate to have blue skies and warm (42 degree) weather while in Katmai National Park.

I am not quite ready to start sharing photos and videos, since I just have my laptop on this trip. Once I get home to my big computer setup, I will start to go through my thousands of photos to share images with you. However I was able to put together this “Postcard from Katmai” from our in-stock fabrics. Everything you see here is something I encountered on this trip!

The highlight of this trip which was focusing on Brown Bears, was a day in a remote valley with about 30-40 bears on the river. We flew in on a float plane in the morning, hung out on shallow islands and river banks all day wearing overall rubber waders, then the float plane came back at the end of the day and picked us up again. We were surrounded by bears the whole time. Because it is the salmon run season, the bears ignored us and were just gorging on 90,000 calories of salmon the whole time, so they were totally uninterested in the humans.

Because we had a biologist as our tour guide (who has studied bear behavior his whole adult life) we were safe, and in fact we had some extraordinary close-up experiences with his guidance. In case you didn’t see my previous newsletter about this, Coastal Brown Bears are the larger version of the Grizzly Bear. Because they are so well fed, they are not grumpy and aggressive like the Grizzlies. You still have to be careful, but this time of year it is normal to see fisherman and bears in the same river.

The other highlight of this trip was being able to spend time with local QUILTERS! I now have my booster shot in the rear view mirror, and everyone in the group was vaccinated as well, so it was a huge relief to safely spend time with the quilting tribe and share our love of fabric and sewing. My lecture has been postponed due to Covid, and I’ll be giving an online presentation in the near future for the Anchorage Quilt Guild. Many thanks to my fun quilter hosts during this visit!

In case you haven’t heard, the winners of the Houston Intl Quilt Festival have been announced! Congratulations to ALL the talented artists who won awards, and a special congrats to Kestrel Michaud whose quilt won the eQuilter $5000 Master Award for Contemporary Art. Click through the link – you will really enjoy looking at all of these masterpieces.

Everything All At Once

Today I flew to Anchorage on a nonstop flight. It is the first flight I’ve taken since QuiltCon in Feb 2020. I wore an N95 mask at the airport and on the plane, and its airtight fit left temporary marks on my face, but I felt secure that it was keeping me safe which was a great comfort.

You may know that I have gone up to Churchill in Northern Manitoba (Canada) several times to photograph the Polar Bears. This time I am going to Katmai National Park in Alaska, to photograph the Brown Bears….the larger but less aggressive version of Grizzly Bears. They are focused on catching spawning salmon in the river to put on the calories before they hibernate for the winter, so they are not too interested in the humans who come to watch them.

Before I go up to Katmai, I am spending a couple nights in Anchorage, connecting with Alaskan quilters. I have known for awhile that there is a very deep intense quilting community up here in Alaska! I mean, what else can you do when the nights are long and it is too cold to go outside? We have many longtime customers up here.

Last night I had dinner with teacher, author and quilt artist – Maria Shell. She did her foundational studies with Nancy Crow, and now has evolved into her own recognizable style of contemporary quiltmaking. She is leaving to teach at Madeline Island School of the Arts so I was lucky to catch her before she left. We discovered that we have many mutual friends and industry contacts, in fact I met her at Quilting Arts TV several years ago. One thing we agreed on – no matter where we travel in the world – we can always connect to the Quilting Tribe in almost every country and every town. What a blessing to be part of this community.

Maria’s work is all pieced Solid fabrics. She does buy many of them from eQuilter! Her intricately spliced and diced and pieced creations are just mind-boggling. This one is called “Everything All At Once” which I can really relate to because it is how life has felt during much of the last year or two. I find it to be a very emotional piece.

Today I am meeting with some SAQA artists at the Anchorage Museum, before my tour events start tonight. I’ll be flying up to Katmai on Thursday, and will share my photos and experiences with you in the next week or two. I am only going on this trip because I got my booster, and everyone on the trip is vaccinated and had to have a negative Covid test result before departure. I am avoiding crowds and being generally anti-social except for a few quilters who are also being extra careful.

Art pictured is from Maria Shell’s ‘Improv Patchwork: Dynamic Quilts Made with Line & Shape’ book which is full of color to empower your creativity, and work freely without preconceived ideas.
