Welcome September

We are thinking of our friends in the Gulf Coast who are without power, or worse, after Hurricane Ida. eQuilter has just made an emergency donation to Mission of Love on GoFundMe for a relief project in Louisiana. 16 years ago we partnered with Kathy Price to send money for disaster relief, and comfort quilts, to a remote coastal town that had been battered by Hurricane Katrina…and had received no FEMA aid. Once again we are supporting Mission of Love to find communities in the coming weeks who are in desperate need of help and supplies. If you wish to help, you can donate on the Mission of Love GoFundMe page, and/or you can send comfort quilts for storm victims.

If you are local in the Boulder CO area, you can drop them off at eQuilter and we will ship them to MOL. If you are not local, PLEASE SHIP DIRECTLY to MOL:

Mission of Love Foundation
2054 Hemlock Court
Youngstown, OH 44515

Kathy does not have a staff to confirm receipt of packages, so if you wish for confirmation of delivery, be sure to send with a tracking number. Her volunteers will be busy putting together a shipment of relief supplies. Your quilt donation will be unpacked and repacked on a palette for bulk shipment to the relief site, where they will be personally and compassionately distributed to those who have lost everything. Be sure to put a label with your name and a message of encouragement, if you can.

As with our other disaster relief comfort quilt projects, we ask you to think about the recipient as someone who probably just lost everything they own, and will be sleeping in a FEMA trailer for a couple years, or in a hotel or even on a cot in an emergency center. We suggest a small bed quilt is the ideal size. We will accept lap quilts, twin or full quilts, or queen size, but I think a twin or full/double size is ideal in this situation. Standard cotton fabric quilts are best.

All quilts dropped off at eQuilter in Boulder Colorado this month and for the foreseeable future will go to Hurricane Ida relief. We are starting to see casualty and damage reports coming in from these small communities, including loss of life, but I am not seeing it in the general media yet. Kathy has contacts on the ground from Katrina, so she can take aid directly to where it is needed most.

If you are not familiar with our charity program, we give 2% of all sales to our list of 7 charities, and we have worked with Mission of Love and Engineers Without Borders to collect and distribute over 15,000 donated comfort quilts around the world. Over 22 years, we have raised over $1.8 million for our charity program. I will be posting updates on the Mission of Love relief project on the eQuilter Facebook page. Thank you for your support. Our hearts go out to those affected, and we are fortunate to have a trusted partner to bring relief to those affected.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Haunted House

One of the big trends on Pinterest and Instagram is photos from spooky abandoned sites,
often hauntingly beautiful homes and buildings in various states of decay but with architectural details that still shine through from another time when quality and embellishments were valued.

This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern features an abandoned Victorian house in desaturated shades of gray and black, perfect for a Halloween project.
To make this 51″ x 56″ quilt design, you will start with the 24″ x 44″ panel, then piece 4 collection coordinates with Black Cats, Skulls, Ravens and wisps of magical smoke, plus a Hoffman Hand-Dye and Kona Solid Black.

This is a conversation piece, for sure! Boo!

My Creative Reset Button

The longer you live, the more interesting people you encounter, and this weekend I am appreciating the people I’ve come to know in my decades making quilts, and making an honest living as a fabriholic. Last night I got back from my personal creativity retreat in Santa Fe, with 3 nights at the opera (the costumes!), many hours wandering through galleries and museums, and some particularly uplifting time spent with remarkable artists.

While in Santa Fe I had a long loud lunch with Betty Busby and the New Mexico contingent of SAQA. We went to a local favorite cafe (away from the tourist trail) and basically opened and closed the place for the lunch shift. In one of those coincidences that are in the “Truth is Stranger Than Fiction” categories, it turned out the artists at the table are finishing a quilt for an artist who recently died, and before she left us, she gave them instructions on how to complete her quilt for a prestigious invitational show. I had heard about this bittersweet task being passed on to her friends, but to find after a couple hours that I had shared a meal with Gail Sims’ creative support team…well that was just remarkable.

Betty brought along one of her amazing 3-D Textile sculptural pieces, and we had a chat about the special stabilizer she uses, called Fosshape. If you are one of those people who scour our newsletters for unique new products, you may have noticed this in our New Product newsletter a couple weeks ago. We also started carrying another specialty stabilizer product used by Thread Genius – Marianne Williamson. She likes to use Pellon 809 in her heavily stitched art quilts.

Friday I stopped in La Veta as I was driving back to Boulder Colorado. You may recognize the name of that little town because it is where Ricky Tims is based. But I was on my way to see Judith Baker Montano, who lives in a colorful Victorian gingerbread house, full of art and color, and surrounded by a vigorous Southwest flower garden. Her husband Ernest was wearing a rainbow-hued tie-dyed shirt, as he watered the floral tsunami in the back yard. (Ricky is in Texas taping a show.)

I remember in the 90s when I first discovered Judith’s books, and her intricate lush embroideries, I was just blown away. Many years ago I visited her at home, while attending a taping at Ricky’s studio in downtown La Veta. This time I was able to spend some time visiting at her kitchen table, touring her studio, and admiring her detailed hand-embroidered landscapes. I have always had a special admiration for this kind of work, probably because I grew up with my Swedish grandma’s crewel embroidery work. I must confess I fondled some of Jude’s private hand-dyed silk ribbon stash while in her studio….

Judith has a private studio/classroom and has very limited availability for small workshops/retreats in her colorful space. I am doing some sourcing research for some of the specialty products she needs for her classes also. If you are a teacher and you need someone to stock specialty products for your students, please do contact me and we’ll see if we can help you!

The Journey….not the Destination

Yesterday I drove down to Santa Fe New Mexico, from Boulder Colorado. I took the long scenic route. This is the first trip I’ve taken since Feb 2020. I kind of feel like I forgot how to travel, and how to pack for that matter. I forgot the mouse to my laptop (I am a mouser, since I do a lot of work in Photoshop) and I forgot my face cream. (visiting the DESERT…duh!) So I am remembering how to travel, and giving myself a little mental health vacation this week. Seeing some artist friends on this trip, and attending the Santa Fe Opera in the evenings.

Taking the long scenic route always has its advantages. Travel, like life, is often about the journey, not the destination. So I took Highway 285 through the mountains, and what a rush when the road dumps out into South Park, the vast open space contained within the Colorado Rockies. I had to pull over and park in Buena Vista, to admire the dramatic peaks. I had to pull over again at the Rio Grande Gorge. As I drove into Taos, I drove through areas of obvious rural poverty, then a grouping of weird round adobe houses that looked like spaceships. (Earthship Biotecture is a sustainable dwelling project that was founded by Michael Reynolds) I had heard about the Earthship houses for decades, but it was exciting to see them in person! I especially appreciated the decorative paintings on the outsides of the Earthship homes, and the sculptures made from recycled materials.

There has been an explosion of murals and street art during the pandemic ( beyond what was already a growing trend around the world) and I’ve delighted in seeing murals with local themes as I am driving around here. My GPS has been super wonky on this trip, so I’ve ended up lost in neighborhoods several times already, which is how I came across this mural on the side of an elementary school. You will see names written in the small border all the way around the mural – names of strong inspiring women. It is good to know that art is being used to educate children about the courageous women who have changed the world.

Santa Fe is one of the most inspirational, artsy, colorful places I’ve ever visited. I almost moved here in the 80s, and it has a special place in my heart.
I know many quilt artists live in this area, and the 4 Corners area, who are in sync with the creative vibe here. I am just going to soak in it for a few days.

A New School Year

Here we are again, sending young and old kids back to school and college, not knowing what the year will bring. We’ve been here before, and the parts that feel familiar from last year, are the parts we want to forget. 2021 feels like an extension of 2020, but the reality is….Christmas and New Years 2022 will be here before we know it. As we plan for the quilts and sewing projects we want to work on this Fall and Winter, we know that keep busy will help us to get to the other side of this…whatever ‘this’ is!

As of Saturday evening, Sophie is all moved out of our family home, into her first college apartment. She is starting her sophomore year as a Music Education Major. So it is a time of new beginnings for us here.

A couple days ago the organizers of the Houston Quilt Festival sent out a message about the upcoming event. Attendees will be required to wear a face mask, which honestly will probably result in more people feeling ok about going.

They further stated:

“If the situation warrants it as we draw closer to our shows, we may also add a requirement to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours of show entrance. The past 18 months have been unprecedented for our world, our industry, and our quilting community. But we are truly all in this together, and we strongly feel that this policy will serve as the best protection for everyone.”

This is the world we live in my friends, and since their event is in Texas, kudos to them for making our health and safety a priority.

I am taking a little mental health break this week, driving down to Santa Fe to attend the outdoor opera. It is the first trip I’ve taken since QuiltCon in Feb 2020! I am going to soak up the Southwest vibe, sleep and write, and charge up the creative batteries.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Snowy Christmas

We are absolutely in love with Julie Paschkis’ whimsical folk art Christmas collection, the inspiration for this week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern. Santa has a painted sled full of apples and toys, but he is encircled by delightful anthropomorphic Arctic animals bringing ornaments to trim a beautiful Pine Tree.

To make this 48″ x 48″ quilt design, you will start with the central Santa panel, and cut up the Blue and White stencil blocks for the corners. You will use the Arctic Stripe plus 3 coordinates to construct the generous border. The Snowy-Starry Sky backdrop ties the scenic panel and border stripe together, giving this a magical Wintertime feeling.

What Makes You Happy?

I feel the approaching turn of the seasons this week, as our students are going back to school. Several of our employees have kids going back to school today, and they are worrying about the same things we worried about one year ago, but now all those moms and dads have 16 months of pandemic experience under their belts. My kids are grown up and I just have one kid returning to college next week, but I guess one of the benefits of being an older parent is that you have a feeling in your gut that one way or the other, we will all get through this…together.

Paul and I recently discovered the show “Ted Lasso” and we are now caught up to the most recent episode which happened to be the Christmas episode. (The schedule is messed up we assume because of pandemic production disruptions.) I kept reading about how the show makes people feel so optimistic and happy, so I figured I could use some of that magic. By the time we got to the 2nd episode we were hooked, and laughing out loud, and maybe a few tears too. Plus the colors of sets and costumes are pretty fun – especially Keeley and her funky fashion sense! Anyway if you need a pick-me-up go get a dose of “Ted Lasso”. (It is filling the giant hole that Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’s cancellation has left.)

Remember the song from the Sound of Music – “My Favorite Things”? When we make our quilts, we can put our favorite things in our projects, and it makes us happy to work with our favorite colors and themes. I love bright colors, baby wild animals, and butterflies, so I made a little collage of my favorite things for you today. You can put your own favorite things in our shopping cart and then play around with them on our Design Board, and it is very therapeutic. Play around with soothing or energizing colors, with kittensor flowers, balloons or bicycles, ponies or chocolates, or whatever…and if it makes you happy….then I’m happy too.

Here’s a creative tip for all of you who have been told to just quilt with neutral-colored threads: Colorful Threads are SO MUCH FUN! There’s nothing like a set of new colorful threads to lift your mood and juice up your creative outlook!

Free eQuilter Pattern – Black Cat Capers

It’s Halloween night in this week’s Free Quilt Pattern, and a sleek Black Cat sits among decorative pumpkins in the window, gazing out on a moonlit sky.
This 49″ x 56″ exclusive eQuilter quilt design cleverly uses a 43″ x 44″ apron panel to create a curtained window for our feline friend.

You have 2 choices for the border this week – the bright Cat-and-Pumpkin stripe – or the darker Haunted House scenic stripe.

As a plus, you can also make some snazzy Halloween oven mitts from the rest of the Apron panel…just in time to pull out those Day of the Dead sugar cookies out of the oven!
(Purchase 1/2 yard of Insul-Bright insulated lining to make one pair of heat-resistant mitts.)
