Stories Worth Telling

July is usually the hottest month of the year here in Colorado, and tomorrow might be one of those 100 degree days. A lot of people like to come here in the Summer to escape the heat and humidity of their home states, and take in the cool temperatures of our Rocky Mountains. I imagine a lot of folks are yearning to be in the wild outdoors, after being cooped up over the Winter. It looks like we are going to have another Covid surge in the US, so camping on a lake sounds like a good place to be.

In our family we have a tradition of telling our stories to save for future generations. I have been reading through stories that my grandpa dictated to my mother in the Seventies. My grandpa was born in a sod hut in Oklahoma territory in 1899, then later moved to West Texas, New Mexico and California where he met my grandmother. (who taught me to sew) They lived near the beach in California, then moved with my mom to a farm in Oregon during WWII. My mom’s memory is not what it used to be, but she still loves to talk about riding her horse bareback on the farm, or to the one-room schoolhouse down a long dirt road.

When Grandpa retired, they bought a Silver Bullet Airstream Trailer, and they drove all over the Western United States. Grandpa was a photographer, and I have his photo albums from the 1920s on. I have that same travel bug and photo bug, but I’ve had to put away those inclinations for the last 16 months. However, after living 40 years of my life in Colorado, I do have my secret places I can go to in the mountains where I can be alone, listen to the wind in the trees, and photograph wildlife. Everybody needs a secret place like that…for one’s sanity.

When I was a little girl in California, my mom decided to get me involved with the Blue Birds, Brownies, and then Girl Scouts. Those are my first memories of camping out overnight, singing around the campfire, and sleeping in a tent. I made sure my kids had experiences like that, so they would also have a connection to Nature. They all had at least a couple experiences of sleepover camp in the mountains here.

I have a deep appreciation for the colors and design aesthetic of Wes Anderson films, but the one I love the most is Moonrise Kingdom. (Closely followed by The Life Aquatic, and Grand Budapest Hotel) If you are looking for films to watch and have a quirky sense of humor, I recommend all of these! But Moonrise Kingdom really captures the flavor of being a preadolescent camper, a moment in life that can never be captured again, but a moment worth remembering.

I hope that you will have some of these moments and memories this summer, that are worth telling as a story, that somebody might enjoy reading about 50 years from now.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Fantastic Forest

Tonight we are leading you into the jungle to experience the colorful amphibians, reptiles and insects who dwell in the Rainforest. We are anticipating the release of Disney ‘s ‘Jungle Cruise’ film, a continuation of the campy boat ride in Disneyland that most of us have experienced at one point in the past.

To make this exclusive 68″ x 68″ quilt design, you will first fussy-cut the jungle critters, to be set on point with a Hoffman Hand-Dye and Kaufman Kona Solid Black frame. Alternate blocks are filled with big Tropical Leaves, and another layer of leaves makes up the border.

We Lost a Good One

Last night we lost a wildly creative artist who has brought so much color and joy to the quilting and sewing world. Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli lived life to the fullest and was an inspiration to so many of us. The last time I saw Jane, we were toasting with Mojitos at Xochi in the Marriott in Houston.

We made a video about her exhibit ‘Altar Offerings’ at the quilt festival in Fall 2019.

I met Jane at Road 2 California – I saw her from a distance in one of her fantastic outfits with matching headpiece – and followed her (as one does) – introduced myself and we had coffee – and discovered we had several mutual close friends. Then we started carrying her beautiful patterns and the rest was history….but way too short of a history.

Jane would love if you share her exhibit Altar Offerings at this video link. She was a sharing and giving person which was expressed in that project. Jane, I know you are smiling and spreading joy now, free of pain. Bless you.

For those of you attending the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK later this week, please be sure to look for our beautiful gallery “For the Love of Gaia” with environmental-themed quilts by many talented artists from all over the world. Due to Covid travel restrictions I had to cancel my plans to travel from the US, but we will have 2 of the artists at the show. Cas Holmes and Sheila Frampton-Cooper will be in attendance (mostly in other galleries) but if you are lucky you might catch them in our Gaia gallery. Wish I could be there – but my activist quilt Rocky Mountain Poison will be there. If you go, please do take photos and post them or send to us here.

I’ll be giving my Festival of Quilts Zoom lecture “International Quilt Trends” one week later on Saturday August 7. You can pre-register now…on the Festival of Quilts site.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Steampunk Undersea

Steam·punk – Noun

* A genre of science fiction that has a historical setting and typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology….a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. *

This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern features a Steampunk fantasy that is somewhere between Jules Verne Sci-Fi and Victorian Magic…featuring an Octopus, Sea Turtle and Nautilus Shell.

To make this 64″ x 72″ quilt design, you will start with the 36″ x 44″ main scenic panel, then cut up a Block panel plus 4 coordinates to make this whimsical quilt.

Dare to be Different

This is one of the times of the year when our suppliers release their new collections of fabric that will ship many months in the future. With all the recent shipping delays, customs delays, and warehouse delays, we take the projected delivery dates with a grain of salt.

I once estimated that we look at 150,000 designs/products per year, and choose about 14,000 of those products. In other words, we cherry-pick for a very specific demographic…YOU!

We are seeing 2 trends in all the new artwork. The first one, which is most exciting, is an explosion of creativity and artistry, with unique and exquisitely rendered illustrations and paintings that are being translated into repeats for fabric, often with digital enhancements.

The other trend represents the designs that we do not choose. That is the over-saturation of simple cartoon-like artwork that is repeated in so many collections from so many companies. These are artists who are looking at current artwork and copying the simple style of designs that are easily imitated, that don’t take a lot of practice or talent to emulate. We have seen, for instance, 20 collections of cartoon animals that all look the same.

It is obvious that during the pandemic, many artists have spent that time in their studio practicing, experimenting, creating, and upping their game. You don’t have to have an MFA to create beautiful artwork or designs for fabric. But you do have to know what is out there in the market, so you can create something that is unique, high quality, and approaching the upward sweep of a trend, not sliding down the backside of a trend.

So for those of you who aspire to be illustrators and designers, we invite you to research the various fabric companies, and get a sense of what has already been done. Then when you spot a fresh design trend in a parallel industry…in the art or fashion world, you can develop that idea to launch in our industry…timed for success.

It takes about a year for an idea or trend to be developed into an artwork concept, then expanded to a collection, then sampled and corrected with the factory, production happens(!), packing and shipping across the ocean, landing and clearing customs, being trucked to a warehouse, then shipped out to quilt shops all over the country. So intrepid designers have to literally see into the future and project what trends will be ripening a year from now. The timeline is a little shortened for digital production, but it is still a long process from concept to a bolt on a shelf.

When we unwrap a beautiful piece of art on a new bolt of fabric, I think of its long journey, and I think of its last few steps…being shipped to you, being cut up and sewn by you, and being hung on a wall, smoothed over a bed, or snuggled by a special little person.

Thanks for letting us be part of your quilt story.

Luana and Paul

Free eQuilter Pattern – Kitten Christmas

It’s Christmas Eve in Kitty Town, and these adorable little fluffballs are waiting for Santa’s visit with milk and cookies in a Gingerbread House. This collection by Kayomi Harai is the definition of ‘Cute’ as far as we are concerned, and we know it will bring spontaneous cries of ‘Oooh’ and ‘Awwww’ as a gift or special wall hanging.

To make this 59″ x 65″ quilt design, start with the 24″ x 44″ Gingerbread Scene Panel, then add Santa Kitty Blocks, and a Hoffman Red Hand-Dye. Sew on a matching Christmas Kitten stripe for the border, with a Candy Cane binding, to complete this project. You still have time to make this Christmas themed quilt before the holidays, for your favorite Crazy Cat Lady!

Just Around the Corner

After a year-and-a-half of severe restrictions on visitation, this last week I was finally able to start visiting my mom again in her room at the nursing home. It felt like a huge weight had been lifted. We had several long hugs, tears and smiles.

Sophie has been working at eQuilter through the whole pandemic, and she’s saved up every penny to buy a car for her student teaching at college. So she’ll have her first car later this week, and she is busy getting ready to move out of our family home, into her first college apartment. (her sophomore year)

So it feels like we are about to turn the page, and as things open up we just hope and pray that the pandemic doesn’t push us backwards this Fall and Winter. But you know, we quilters just keep doing what we always do….cut and sew and stitch….and it is a bridge to whatever comes next.

A few things I want to make sure you saw this week:
The Persis collection from Kaufman is just so drop-dead gorgeous, no image can do it justice. I promise you, it is even more beautiful in person!

Our quarterly shipment of exclusive Langa Lapu 60″ wide Sun Prints, Hand-Dyes and Linocut Panels came in this week. We increased our order because it sold out so fast last time. These are all hand-made by a group of village women in South Africa who literally have no other income to feed their families, so we’ll keep ordering these unique hand-made products as long as you keep coming back for more!

Also I’ve been in enough Zoom sessions with art quilters who buy their machine needles by the box of 100, that I decided it’s time we expand our selection of these bulk needles. If you are sewing every day for hours, the tip from the professionals is to oil your machine and change your needle every day. If you are a serious quilter, it is cheaper to buy them in bulk so you can have the necessary luxury of a fresh daily needle.

Also the huge shipment of Batik Precuts from Island Batik – Strips and 10″ Squares – tend to sell out quickly so take a quick peek. Fellow Batik-Freaks know that these Batik Precuts are a great way to get a wide variety of colors in your fav fabric.

The start of school is just around the corner so its time to start planning your Fall projects…that’s what I am doing this weekend!

Free eQuilter Pattern – September Morning

We may be in the dog days of Summer now, but September is only six and a half weeks away, and the cooling breezes and crisp mornings of Autumn are just around the corner. With milder weather comes the Fall colors, and the joy of going for a forest walk in the shimmering hues of Red, Gold and Orange.

This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern uses a 28″ x 44″ digital scenic panel, to make the 60″ x 45″ horizontal quilt design. We love the painterly quality of this collection, with the glowing colors that extend into the mosaic-like border. We’ve combined 5 collection coordinates with the panel, to create a dreamy landscape that invites you on a September Morning adventure. Can you hear the rustling of the leaves, and the gurgling of the stream?

Rustling in the Bushes at Midnight

If you’ve been reading our newsletters for awhile, perhaps you’ve found your way to my photo pages and our video pages. Over the years I’ve photographed a lot of quilt shows, and interviewed a lot of quilters! One of the things I treasure about the quilt industry and quilt artists, is that over time we keep running into each other at these quilt festivals. It is so inspiring to see over time, how you all develop as creative people in surprising and wonderful ways.

Recently I was delighted to see a lovely watercolor collage wildlife collection by a British quilter who I first met 9 years ago at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. In fact I did a 10 minute video interview with Kate Findlay about her quilts, which at the time were inspired by a completely different subject. I ordered her collection before I realized that I had previously interviewed this new fabric designer – a pleasant surprise!

We had a little excitement in the neighborhood this evening. A mountain lion was spotted in a tree between our neighborhood and the neighboring property of Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory. That is about a half block right behind our house. We’ve had bears, moose, deer and now a mountain lion wandering East of the foothills into our area which is a rural suburban community adjacent to Boulder. The last few nights when I’ve taken our dogs out for one last whiz at midnight, I’ve heard a rustling in the bushes/trees in the far back corner of our back yard. I think from now on I’ll bring a flashlight out, so I can see the eyes of the raccoon or fox, and not imagine it is the cougar!

My curated exhibit “For the Love of Gaia” will be featured in a gallery at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK in 2 weeks, but I will not be there. 2 of our 15 talented artists will be in attendance, so if you visit our gallery, you might get lucky and be able to meet Sheila Frampton-Cooper or Cas Holmes.

However I WILL be giving a virtual lecture for the FOQ the following weekend, and I’ll share the registration link in the next week, as soon as it comes to me! That will be at 6 pm UK time, on Saturday August 7. Watch this space for details.

Colorado is blanketed in hazy smoke from the western wildfires now. We hope all of you out west are able to stay safe from the heat and the fires.

Free eQuilter Pattern – Giraffe Family

Whether you’ve seen Giraffes in the wilds of Africa, or in a zoo enclosure, you know that they are the Gentle Giants of the herbivore world. This week’s exclusive eQuilter Free Quilt Pattern features a detailed portrait of a Giraffe pair, capturing the sweet and mellow essence of this species.

To make this 51″ x 65″ quilt design, first you will start with the 29″ x 44″ digital-printed panel. Then piece and sew stone textures, a hand-dye, a digital Giraffe skin print, and a solid black, to make this African Wildlife vignette.
