When I travel to quilt festivals around the world to photograph the quilt exhibits, I am always looking for special quilts that express the spirit of the local culture. <\/p>\n

Today I am featuring 2 parts of a triptych by Kathy Grimson, that I saw at the Manawata Quilt Conference in New Zealand. It tells the tale of the Makauri Tree Legend<\/a>, and this stylized whale<\/a> is part of the Maori visual storytelling. I have added a couple favorite whale<\/a>-themed fabrics that we carry. <\/p>\n

A couple years ago while visiting family in Hawaii, I stumbled across a book of Maori Tattoo Art<\/a>. It is so beautiful! When visiting Hawaii you may see similar stylized Polynesian art. (including the locals' tattoos<\/a>!) So I had an eye out for any of this type of highly stylized artwork. In a way, it reminds me of ancient Celtic stylized symbols and designs. (I love them both!) <\/p>\n

Here's my creative inspiration tip of the week: <\/p>\n

Google "Maori Tattoo Designs" and "Polynesian Tattoo Designs" and click on 'Images' to view all the beautiful artwork. Then prepare to dive into the fascinating world of this Pacific indigenous art form! <\/p>\n
