In my Saturday night newsletter, I mentioned a
\nquilt in the
\nBirmingham<\/a> Quilt Festival with a Scottish Thistle. Today I want to show you
\na detail of that quilt, because of the amazing quilting in the background.<\/p>\n

One of the trends we are seeing is tons of creative doodle-quilting in the
\nbackgrounds of modern quilts. What might appear to be blank, or just negative
\nspace in a quilt, turns out to be full
\nof unique machine-quilting<\/a> upon closer inspection.<\/p>\n

If you read my reviews from QuiltCon<\/a>
\n(or read my article about Modern Quilts in the recent
\nissue of McCalls Quilting Magazine<\/a>), you are aware that there has been an
\nupswing in younger quilters becoming very proficient on longarm machines. A lot
\nof the quilts at QuiltCon<\/a>
\nwere pieced by one person, and then quilted on a longarm by a second quilter.<\/p>\n

This Scottish Thistle quilt was made by one person, and even though it is not
\ntechnically a modern quilt (it has an appliqued flower) there are elements of
\nmodern quilting here. You can click through to my photo page<\/a> to see
\nmore detail shots, and an image of the whole (large!) quilt by Kay Bell.<\/p>\n

The
\nmost creative quilts<\/a> come from those who don't follow the rules, but
\nexplore the place in between the trends, the descriptive labels, and the latest
\ntechniques or media. We see elements of old and new here, but in this
\ncombination, we see something unique and fresh.<\/p>\n

So the moral of the story is…don't look to others' guidelines and rules when
\ncreating. Identify the trends and then break the rules. Make it beautiful or
\nmake it edgy, as you wish, but make it your own and show off your talent in
\nyour own way!<\/p>\n
