{"id":216,"date":"2013-07-13T17:05:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-13T21:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/50.87.217.193\/blog\/tornado-quilts-for-moore-oklahoma"},"modified":"2015-03-07T00:07:53","modified_gmt":"2015-03-07T00:07:53","slug":"tornado-quilts-for-moore-oklahoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.equilter.com\/blog\/tornado-quilts-for-moore-oklahoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Tornado Quilts for Moore Oklahoma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">I am home from Oklahoma City,<br \/>\nbut I definitely brought back the visceral images of the tornado&#39;s<br \/>\ndestruction.<br \/>\nAfter spending time in neighborhoods that had been reduced to twisted<br \/>\npiles of rubble, and as I drove home into my own cul-de-sac, I couldn&#39;t<br \/>\nhelp but imagine what it would feel like to walk into one&#39;s own<br \/>\ndecimated neighborhood.<br \/>\nAfter spending time outside the memorial at Plaza Tower Elementary where<br \/>\n there is only a foundation with a chainlink fence, it reminded me of<br \/>\nGround Zero in NYC, of burnt neighborhoods here in Colorado, and other<br \/>\ndisaster sites I&#39;ve visited.<\/p>\n<p>However I am happy to report that together we made a difference for 400<br \/>\npeople in Moore, Oklahoma.<br \/>\nWe trucked in your 400 donated quilts, and teamed up with the Stitchin&#39;<br \/>\nPost across the street from the Town Hall, and handed out a total of 500<br \/>\n quilts and several hundred pillowcases to many families who had lost<br \/>\ntheir homes, or worse.<br \/>\n(Stitching&#39; Post brought over the pillowcases, and about 100 additional<br \/>\ndonated quilts.)<\/p>\n<p>If you&#39;d like to read more about our work with Mission of Love, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mooremonthly.com\/news\/homemade-quilts-offered-to-tornado-victims\">watch this video<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/normantranscript.com\/headlines\/x35810593\/Tornado-survivor-comes-for-a-quilt-and-gets-the-promise-of-a-new-home\">read this article.<\/a> We were also on Channel 4 News in Oklahoma City but I don&#39;t have a link to the video clip yet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/05\/27\/glenn-lewis_n_3342998.html\">We met with Mayor Glenn Lewis<\/a>,<br \/>\n to get a big picture perspective on the aftermath of this event.<br \/>\nOne thing that is so devastating is the huge amount of money that has<br \/>\nbeen donated to big name relief organizations, and only a shamefully<br \/>\nsmall fraction of that money has gone to helping the people who lost<br \/>\ntheir homes.<br \/>\n12,000 homes were destroyed, and 5700 are too damaged to live in until<br \/>\nthey are repaired.<\/p>\n<p>Before donating to a big relief organization, please investigate the<br \/>\norganization (no matter how famous!) to see how much of their donated<br \/>\nfunds go to &quot;administrative expenses&quot;.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nyes I am talking about THAT big relief organization.<br \/>\nActually there are 2 of them that are sitting on funds, not only from<br \/>\nthis tornado, but from the previous tornado!<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Price was so moved by our time with <a href=\"http:\/\/normantranscript.com\/headlines\/x35810593\/Tornado-survivor-comes-for-a-quilt-and-gets-the-promise-of-a-new-home\">Danni and her family<\/a>,<br \/>\n that she decided to start an effort to rebuild homes in Moore, as<br \/>\nMission of Love has done after Katrina in Lafitte LA, and also in Pine<br \/>\nRidge SD.<\/p>\n<p>When you place an order with us, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.missionoflove.org\/\">if you choose Mission of Love as your eQuilter Charity, your 2% will go towards the building supplie<\/a>s<br \/>\n for the first house we will rebuild together, for Danni&#39;s family, who<br \/>\nlost not only their uninsured home, (read the article) but their 9 year<br \/>\nold son Christopher.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to lend additional support for rebuilding homes in Moore, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.missionoflove.org\/\">donate to Mission of Love via PayPal<\/a>, or volunteer to help build a house with Kathy and Mission of Love.<\/p>\n<p>If you missed out on donating a quilt, you can still send them to the<br \/>\nStitchin&#39;
