We’ve had a few chilly mornings here in Boulder Colorado, even though it is warm or hot during the day, and I find myself unconsciously organizing and nesting, like a squirrel at the end of summer<\/a>. In fact we have a lot of wildlife in our backyard, our neighborhood, and our foothills…the bears are searching<\/a> for food already where the mountains meet the city.<\/p>\n

I have always been a sharp wildlife spotter, but I think I am even more attuned since my 2 trips to Churchill to photograph the polar bears.<\/a> Yesterday a bald eagle flew overhead<\/a> in front of me, and landed next to me across the street. I pulled over and we looked at each other for awhile. Those moments are so magical. I also had a close encounter with a coyote pup this summer, and I felt sad that even though he was just playing and minding his own business, someone might come by and want to cut short his life.<\/p>\n

In the next couple weeks the Aspen will turn gold in the high country here, and the Elk rutting season will begin. Our Rocky Mountain National Park is famous for the elk season<\/a>, where you can spot herds of elk from the road as you drive through the park. Certain areas are known for moose<\/a>, and mountain residents spot bears and mountain lions often. Deer are plentiful, as are a variety of raptors.<\/p>\n

This time of year we see the wildlife often<\/a>, as they try to fatten up for the winter ahead. So as the leaves turn<\/a> gold, orange and red, and maybe we are sewing some Halloween projects<\/a>, I am also enjoying the huge variety of wildlife fabrics that are available these days. The North Woods realistic panels<\/a> are the most stunning I think, and the scenes of a cabin by a lake<\/a>, can put us in the mood for a mountain or wilderness vacation.<\/a><\/p>\n

I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful place,<\/a> but also to have such a huge variety of forest, lake<\/a> and wildlife fabric designs<\/a> to express my love of Nature! How about you?<\/p>\n

Next week Mission of Love<\/a> is building a house for a homeless Lakota grandmother<\/a> in Pine Ridge, SD<\/a>. (and undoubtedly 20 members of her family will end up living there) eQuilter has kicked in money to ship building supplies to the Pine Ridge reservation, but they are still short of covering the whole cost. If you’d like to contribute something, you can donate directly on the Mission of Love<\/a> website.
