Our first
\nreal snow of the season<\/a> will arrive early Thursday morning, and the winds
\nare blowing away the last few leaves clinging to our trees. <\/p>\n

Many of you
\nhave started holiday projects, but we still have an excellent
\nselection of Christmas and Winter fabrics in stock<\/a>…for those of us who
\ndon't like to start holiday projects until the stores put out the Halloween
\ndecorations<\/a>… haha!<\/p>\n

I am still going through all my photos from Russia<\/a>, and this
\nweek I thought I'd share this delightful handpainted folk art which I saw in a
\nshop on Arbat Street<\/a> in
\nMoscow.<\/a>
\nThis is the lid and the side of a wooden chest. <\/p>\n

Inspiration comes from
\nmany places, sometimes from sources that catch us by surprise. If you were
\nwatching my Facebook page, you know that Sophie and I attended MileHi Con this
\nweekend, which is basically a bunch of SciFi<\/a>\/
\nFantasy<\/a>
\nGeeks and Nerds who dress up and get together to share their love of Star Trek,
\nHarry Potter, Steampunk, Anime, etc. It is kind of like ComicCon but focused on
\nbooks<\/a>
\nand movies<\/a>
\ninstead of comics<\/a>.
\nBest of all – almost everyone wears a costume! Brilliant!<\/p>\n

I love hanging
\nout with geeks and nerds because they are singularly passionate about their
\nchosen fantasy world. They enter the world of SciFi<\/a>
\nor Fantasy<\/a>
\nand completely immerse themselves in the experience. They experience true geeky
\nbliss when role-playing with fellow fans, cracking jokes in a secret language,
\nand creating fiendishly wacky detailed costumes from recycled and found objects.
\nI met a guy who has been making SciFi<\/a>
\nart (sculptures) from recycled and found items (translation: garbage and junk)
\nfor 20 years…way before it was trendy.<\/p>\n

Sound familiar?<\/p>\n

Yes we
\nquilters started out the same way. Scrap
\nquilts<\/a>, gossip-fests over the quilting
\nframe<\/a>, fat
\nquarters<\/a> and frog stitches. <\/p>\n

I am proud to be a Quilt Geek. <\/p>\n

I
\nlaugh at really bad quilting puns just because it is our own secret
\nlanguage.<\/p>\n

This weekend I am off to the ultimate gathering for Quilt Nerds
\nand Geeks, in Houston. Like a Star Trek convention, we don our quilty garb and
\nexcitedly stalk our quilty celebrities. At MileHi Con there was a SciFi<\/a>\/
\nFantasy<\/a>
\nArt Fair and auction. In Houston we have multiple categories to showcase
\ncreativity and technical genius…and our own fundraising auctions. <\/p>\n

I
\nhave to say though, the costumes at MileHi Con were more detailed and
\noutrageous. Quilt Market always occurs right around Halloween, so we see a few
\nwitches wandering the aisles. As the quilting movement expands to include more
\nyoung people and fashion sewists, perhaps we'll see more creative costuming in
