Today I am halfway through my trip
\nto Rome<\/a> and
\nRussia,<\/a> after spending 3 days in
\nItaly<\/a>, and 3 days in
\nMoscow<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Both the
\nItalian<\/a> quilters and the
\nRussian quilters<\/a> have gone out of their way to make me feel very welcome. <\/p>\n

Sunday I gave a power point presentation at a quilt exhibition in
\nMoscow<\/a>, to a full house with standing room only. The
\nRussian quilters<\/a> were rapt with attention as I showed images of quilts from
\nColorado, Houston, Tokyo<\/a>,
\nMelbourne<\/a>,
\nIreland
\nand England<\/a>. Then I photographed their quilts and their fashion show, and
\npromised to add some of those images to my presentation for next time, along
\nwith the
\nItalian<\/a> quilts I saw a couple days earlier.<\/p>\n

I've been treated to
\nGeorgian and Ukrainian<\/a>
\ncuisine while visiting Moscow, and yesterday my hosts drove me out to an ancient monastery complex<\/a>
\noutside of Moscow, where I was able to visit one of the most sacred sites in
\nRussia. <\/p>\n

Today was a day I will never forget. I photographed the lake is
\nsaid to have inspired Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake<\/a>, and paid my
\nrespects at cellist
\nRostropovich's<\/a> grave. I visited the churches and museums of The Kremlin –
\nwas totally blown away by the costume and textile exhibit there – and then
\nviewed the gorgeous interior medieval frescoes and multiple rooftop golden
\ncupolas<\/a> of the Kremlin's Cathedral
\nSquare<\/a>. Truly, I have never seen anything like this. The riches boggle the
\nbrain.<\/p>\n

Then this evening I was driven out of town again to a dinner in a
\nprivate home. I was given a private
\nconcert<\/a> of Russian classical pieces, by an 86 year old UNESCO Gold Medal
\nLaureate pianist. (and holocaust survivor) They handed me a bunch of fragrant
\nwhite flowers, sat me in a chair next to his white baby grand, and he played
\nseveral pieces for me. Wow!<\/p>\n

Then we had an amazing spread of homemade Ukrainian<\/a> specialty foods,
\nserved on a lace tablecloth, with an autumn centerpiece. Then my hostess (who
\nowns a quilt shop) brought out her collection of 18th century chatelaines. <\/p>\n

This was a day that I will never forget.<\/p>\n

And… it all came from
\na mutual love of quilting.<\/p>\n

If I am lucky I'll get 4 hours of sleep
\ntonight – then I'll have another day and evening of sightseeing and quilting
\ncamaraderie. I am being taken to a textile museum which is closed for
\nrenovation, but we have an appointment for a private showing of the collections
\ntomorrow afternoon. <\/p>\n

Thursday I take a train to St Petersburg, where I'll
\nfulfill my dream of seeing the Hermitage in person. <\/p>\n
