\nThis Many Cultures" is from the recent Festival
\nof Quilts<\/a> in Birmingham. The artist who made this multiple portrait piece is
\nRita Dijkstra-Hesselink, who lives in Holland.<\/p>\n
\nreflected the growing international<\/a>
\npopularity of our
\nbeloved art and craft – Quilting<\/a>. Around the
\nworld<\/a> so many people share a love of fabric and sewing, but when they are
\nexposed to the joys of quilting, they can't help but be captured by the
\npleasures of patchwork and fiber arts.<\/p>\n
\nwere captured by the quilting bug? I do! It was 1990…and I had left the
\nfashion industry and moved back to Colorado to raise my young son. (who is now
\n22, and graduating from college in December!)<\/p>\n
\nthrough the magazines at a supermarket<\/a>,
\nwhen I came across a group of quilting
\nmagazines<\/a>. As I picked them up and began leafing through the pages, the hair
\non the back of my neck stood up. I knew in that moment, that this was what I'd
\nbeen looking for. <\/p>\n
\nthe terms and
\ntechniques of quilting<\/a>, my background in garment
\ndesign and construction<\/a>, and my love of fabrics and color,<\/a>
\nall came together in a glorious whirlwind of creative
\ndelight<\/a>. I felt I'd found my place where I belonged, and the wonderful
\nquilters I met those years were welcoming and generous.<\/p>\n
