eQuilter is excited to host fabric collage icon Susan Carlson in our classroom this Spring!

Ever since we first saw Susan’s giant 20-foot Crocodile at the Houston Quilt Festival, we’ve been planning to have Susan come and teach her unique collage techniques in the eQuilter classroom.

Create a fabric collage quilt of your own chosen subject using Susan\u2019s innovative layering\/collage method. Individual design, fabric selection, construction, borders, and quilting will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the collage piecing process. Students will draw their design onto a foundation fabric and fill in the design with fabrics of their choice\u2014without the use of templates. For about an hour each morning, Susan starts with a discussion and demonstration that will lay out the basics of fabric collage and will give you the information you need to start your work day. She then visits each student in turn to address individual needs and their project\u2019s unique challenges.

Susan’s workshops are limited to 15 students and tend to sell out quickly, due to her avid band of fans who come from around the country. She has a gift for hands-on teaching and coaching. She teaches students to see – truly see – what they are looking at. Working with values is critical. When you attend one of Susan’s 5-Day workshops, you have the chance to learn how to see, as Susan sees the world.

Skill level for this workshop is Confident Beginner to Intermediate.

Teacher Bio:
Susan Carlson is an artist by birth, a teacher by calling, and an author by choice. She has been developing and practicing her own technique of fabric collage quilting for over thirty years, teaching it for 20 years, and has written two books describing it (Freestyle Quilts and Serendipity Quilts).

Each year she travels around the country and internationally helping hundreds of students to discover and set free the quilt artist inside. Her quilts have won awards from the American Quilter\u2019s Society and the International Quilt Festival. Susan is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and a long-time student of the Meta Carlson Studio of Fabric Creations (aka her mom’s sewing room).
