eQuilter is excited to host international award-winning quilt artist and author Lea McComas in our classroom this summer!

In the Applique Portraits 2-day workshop, you will create a portrait quilt from your own photo. Learn basic portrait composition, photo editing, and fabric selection for a portrait quilt. This workshop will include instruction on how to create a pattern and use a fused, raw-edge applique technique to produce an amazing life-like portrait quilt top approximately 14 x 18 in. Participants will send Lea 2-3 digital photos 2 weeks prior to the workshop so that she can select and prepare the best one for use in this workshop.

Kit fee of $5 will be paid to the teacher at the time of the workshop to cover the cost of the printout.

Supply list will be provided after registration.

Skill level for this workshop is beginner to intermediate

Teacher Bio:

With a life-long interest in fiber, Lea McComas began sewing at age 6 and quilting at 16. She earned an M.A. in Education and has been a public school educator for over 34 year, including 9 years spent teaching children of military families serving overseas. While living abroad, Lea immersed herself in interaction and learning with the people and traditions of many cultures, including studying carpet weaving in Turkey and fabric dying in Japan. Upon her return to the states in 2001, Lea discovered art quilting. Since then, her award-winning portrait and genre quilts have been exhibited in many national and international juried shows. Her work has also been featured in numerous publications and online platforms. In 2014, she received the Superior Thread Masters Award for Thread Artistry at IQF Houston. Her first book, Thread-Painted Portraits, shares the extensive knowledge and techniques behind her award-winning portrait quilts.
