A Tale to Tell

This week I am writing to you from the International Quilt Festival in Houston Texas. Last night was the IQA award ceremony, where $97K in prize money was given out to 101 winners. In addition to the contest quilts in the IQA categories, there are so many special exhibits here… 4 of which eQuilter is sponsoring. (Our 5th sponsored category was the Animal Kingdom quilts in the IQA awards tonight.) The Baseball World Series just happened to be going on next door, but we were celebrating the Quilt World Series!

Here is a detail from a quilt in one of our sponsored special exhibits – the Altar Quilts based on the pattern by Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli. Because this week is Halloween and the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos), I thought it would be appropriate to share this self-memorial quilt.

The artist statement reads:

“This quilt is celebrating my dear friend Leigh Hay-Martin from Jerome Arizona. She started it while she was going through cancer treatments. She told me it was all the things she celebrated and loved. We lost her sweet soul in August 2018. I am glad her family allowed me to submit it.”

Leigh’s joy for life is apparent in this quilt, and we celebrate this artwork that continues to share her story. So many quilts here tell poignant stories…stories of loss, healing, hope and celebration. The ones that pluck at our heartstrings are the ones that share a visual narrative and invite us to come inside the tale.

Sophie and I will be flying home on Halloween, hopefully when the crazy snowstorm in Colorado has subsided!
