Creative Nudge – The Feisty Princess

untitled-1

Today we lost a funny brave soul who played a feisty princess and became an icon to Sci-Fi fans. I started the day thinking about writing an essay about creativity for the New Year, but then we heard that we’d lost Carrie Fisher.

Recently Sophie and I went to see the Star Wars Costume exhibit at the Denver Art Museum, and one of the displays that drew the most crowds, was the famous metal bikini worn by Princess Leia when she disposes of Jabba the Hutt. Carrie hated wearing that costume, but it made for a memorable scene! (See the photo above, from the exhibit)

Rebel, Jedi, Princess, Queen: Star Wars and the Power of Costume was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in partnership with the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art and Lucasfilm Ltd., and will be at the Denver Art Museum through April 2, 2017.

Remember when The Power of Myth and Joseph Campbell were on PBS, and the word “iconic” took on deeper meanings, especially around the story of Star Wars? We were searching for female heroes then, and Carrie’s ‘Leia’ gave us a new kind of hero.

As we prepare for the start of a new year, may we carry the spirit of brave Princess Leia with us…and May the Force Be With You.
