Creative Nudge – Houses and Neighborhoods

Untitled-2

Larger trends in Home Dec, Graphic Design and Fashion often make their way to the quilt fabric designs in our industry, and also to the quilts themselves.

This image collage features a House-themed detail from a Japanese quilt, as seen at the Tokyo Quilt Festival. It is set in the middle of the collage (note the quiltmaker’s name in the lower left hand corner of the quilt image) with House-themed fabrics, plus Bicycle and Scooter-themed fabrics.

I am seeing these House-themed quilts in every quilt exhibit over the last year. I am also seeing these cheerful bright houses in paper design and other surface design.

There has been a trend in general toward Home Dec products, because people are spending more time at home. Many of them are quilting! So it makes sense that there would be more House-themed fabrics, and House-themed quilts. It is a visual topic that we long for now. We like to see houses all in a row, in cheerful colors…maybe with a bicycle or a dog in the front yard.

This Friday is our 17th Anniversary! We started in the basement of our house, and our rooms soon filled up with colorful fabrics. The UPS truck was coming and going, and I’m sure our neighbors wondered what the heck we were doing. Now, occasionally someone says “I ordered from you when you were in the basement!” That is ancient history! But our house looks much like the houses in the collage above – painted blue with a bicycle and a tree in the front yard, and 2 dogs and a cat looking out the windows.

Do you see *your* house in the collage above?

If you are thinking about joining me on the Polar Bear Tour in November, I urge you to make a deposit to hold your place. They are holding this tour open for my group, but will open it to the general public April 15. Payment plans are available!
