Creative Nudge – International Trends in Machine Stitching – Part 2

machine-stitching

Doodling, Zentangling, Adult Coloring Books… they are all part of the same trend. These days so many of us seem to be drawn to the idea of meditative doodling, making insanely intricate mandalas, and losing ourselves in the magic of coloring books drawn by others.

But wait! We can do that on a sewing machine! We can doodle and loop and scribble in multiple colors, with freemotion quilting!

Could you give yourself permission to make a large wall quilt with multiple colors of freemotion doodling?

Cecile Trentini has created a fantasmagorical tangle of stitched squiggles and scrawls, breaking most of the rules of quilting, creating a jungle maze of stitching on her Bernina sewing machine.

This collage is made up of detail shots from several of her quilts, which were shown in her own private exhibit booth, at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. Not everyone gets what it is she is doing, but actually she is mirroring the current doodling/drawing/zentangling craze… on her Bernina.

She uses Black Thread on White, Multicolor Threads on White, and White/Neutral threads on a Black background. She makes wall-hangings and huge wall banners, made up of smaller stitched panels.

Her work is fascinating. You can get lost in the intricate abstract maze of her machine-stitched meditation. I know for sure, she has a great time when she is stitching on her quilts!

Saturday I fly to Miami to meet my group of travelers, and Sunday we will hop on a charter flight to Havana. The Fall Equinox is just around the corner, and the leaves are just starting to turn here in Boulder Colorado.
