Creative Nudge – Mother Earth – Our Home

mother_earth

As I review the photos of quilt festivals I’ve attended over the last year, in preparation for my lecture at the Dairy Barn on Thursday, I’ve been picking out some more of my favorite quilts to share with you. This one was photographed at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK, in August.

This is a section of a large and very detailed quilt by Katalin Horvath, titled “Mother Earth is Our Home.” It depicts different continents and environments around the globe, with the flora and fauna….and indigenous people who live in each environment. The rainbow colors are obviously symbolic, and this is a quilt you can enjoy from a distance, or up close. It also struck me as a very spiritual quilt, with a lot of heart and soul in every stitch. Katalin set out to share a vision and a message, and it is delivered in a powerful way in this piece.

The eye goes to the animals in the quilt, which are rendered in a very graphic way, but with lots of delicate stitching details. You can stand and look at this quilt for a long time because it tells so many stories, and each visual story is so fascinating. I am posting photos of the quilt and the details on my photo page so you can appreciate all the thought that went into this piece. She uses the artwork of the indigenous people to tell each story – using Celtic knots, Pacific Northwest Native art, Aboriginal dots, etc.

With the announcement that honeybees are being put on the Endangered Species List for the first time in the US, it seems like it is a time to stop and contemplate what is happening here on our Mother Earth, and how it is affecting the creatures who travel through space and time with us on this beautiful planet. We know our eQuilter customers love wildlife and Nature-themed fabrics, so we pounce on any new fabrics that depict the infinite beauty of Mother Nature.

From the oceans, to the Arctic, to the Northwoods, and the plains of Africa…fish, birds, bees and bears…we love all of these too. We are aggressively restocking all the BEE fabrics we can get our hands on now, for all of you who want to include Honeybees in upcoming projects!

I’ve added a collage of wildlife fabrics on the top and bottom of the quilt photo. Remember if you want to direct your 2% to an environmental charity during checkout, you can choose Rainforest Action Network or Ocean Conservancy.

If you live in Ohio and want to see more quilt photos, come to the Dairy Barn Thursday at noon, for my power point lecture “International Quilt Trends”!

Details and Tickets are available here.
