Lava Lamps are Groovy, Baby

Tonight I am sharing with you one of my favorite whimsical quilts from QuiltCon, by Australian maker Molli Sparkles. (Quilted by Leanne Harvey) I have set her “Lava Lamps” in a collage of fabrics currently in stock, to show how her quilt imitates a huge trend in fabric design. Abstract digital prints, which includes Marbled swirls and artwork created by Acrylic Paint pouring, is a huge category that is wildly popular among contemporary quilters. As Molli says in her artist statement – “It really is groovy baby.”

I have uploaded over 300 quilt photos from QuiltCon now, so it is a good time to check out this online album to study Molli’s Seventies-themed quilt, and many others that caught my eye at the exhibit.

Did you have a Lava Lamp as a teenager? I did. Oh man, I loved that iconic accessory SO much. I would put on Pink Floyd and watch the lava blobs slowly bubble up, and then tumble back down. It was cosmic, dude. Now my kids go to Seventies parties and dress up in Seventies flowered shirts, bell bottoms and giant glasses. If only I could still fit into those embroidered bell bottoms….

Speaking of the Seventies, have you noticed how many of the QuiltCon quilts have ORANGE as a color theme? Not just an accent, but a major hue in the color story. The color combos I liked the most were kind of a Creamsicle Orange, Hot Pink, and Crocus Purple. Take a stroll through these photos and see what color trends jump out at you!

Sharing your love of fabric,
Luana and Paul
