South of the Border

My goal each week, when we send out this Midweek Creative Nudge, is to give you some inspirational juice to get you through the week. I see about 150,000 pieces of art each year, and choose less than 10% of this artwork for our highly curated offerings at eQuilter. We’ve developed a very special clientele who appreciate art, color, design, travel, culture, and things that make us smile! You are gardeners, pet owners, collectors, doctors and nurses, musicians and sci-fi nerds, bakers and birders. You like books and bicycles, cosplay and hiking, sipping and brewing, stargazing and calligraphy. So we had to find fabrics for ALL of you.

Gosh you all have so much talent!

The last couple weeks we’ve been featuring snowy holiday themes, so now for something completely different, I’m thinking you are about ready for a little dream vacation south of the border. I wanted to make sure you saw this floral collection Dazzling Garden, which reminds me of the beautiful hand-embroidery I’ve seen in Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil. It also happens to match up pretty spectacularly with the Frida Kahlo fabrics. So I’ve put together a colorful collage with some of these fun fabrics, to add a little Cha-Cha to your Wednesday.

I do suggest that if you want to order anything for Christmas delivery (there’s still time to order chocolate along with your thread and fabric!) you should place that order this week. And if there’s something here that YOU are hoping for, you can always drop hints for an eQuilter Gift Certificate, which can be ordered as late as Christmas Eve and delivered by email to you or a fellow fabriholic.

Today is National Pastry Day, so I am going to brew some tea, bake some muffins, and pretend like I have nothing to do for an hour or so. Care to join me?

with hope for the future…

Free eQuilter Pattern – Christmas Eve Pets

This week’s Free Quilt Pattern is an eQuilter exclusive, combining prints from 3 different studios, to make a one-of-a-kind Masterpiece for your Christmas celebrations!

To make this 64″ x 71″ quilt design, you will start with the gorgeous 36″ x 44″ central panel, then add Paula Nadelstern’s Snowflakes and Borders, and piece with Rubin Studio coordinates. The Christmas Eve scene in the panel is the real STAR of the show – with all the cats and dogs watching as Santa rides off into the starry sky lit by a giant Full Moon. This panel has been a runaway best-seller and it is a seasonal print so if you love it, grab it now before it’s gone for the season.

You might consider some freemotion stitching with a silver metallic thread. Be sure to pick up a Metallica needle pack and Sewer’s Aid thread lubricant to make your sparkly stitching a little easier!

A Place for Everyone

Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 38

I hope that many of you checked out the Virtual Quilt Festival the last few days, organized by the same people who bring us the Houston Quilt Festival in a normal year. eQuilter is proud to sponsor 3 exhibits plus the NEW Youth category! We are super excited about the latter, because now there is a stepping stone for young people who want to get involved in the this wonderful textile art and craft. Tokyo and Birmingham UK have had Youth categories for many years, so we applaud Quilts Inc for adding this fantastic segment to the quilt exhibits!

Lets face it. Quilting has been occupied by middle-aged and retirement-aged women for decades, but it is so exciting to welcome students, young moms, more men, and now children to the wonderful world of quilting. Come on in – the water’s fine – and we love to have you join us!

The motto of Boulder High School (where all 3 of our kids graduated) is “A Place for Everyone” and I am so gratified to see that the quilting world continues to expand and embrace this motto as well. A long time ago, a young person who ventured to a quilt guild, might have felt that it was a bunch of old ladies and there was no place for her…or him. We continue to tear down those walls and give newcomers a place to show their work and share their voice, and that’s a GOOD thing. The Quilting Multiverse has room for everyone to do their thing, and most of us recognize that it is a place of refuge in troubled times such as these.

It is a place for hand applique, traditional blocks, textile painting, historic embellishment, experimental fiber art, wearable art, teachers, students, historic researchers, collectors, activists, authors, photographers, and fabriholics. Some day soon we will get together in our guilds, our exhibits, our quilt festivals and our workshops…over cups of tea or coffee, glasses of wine, and long meals where we catch up on how we got through the quarantine.

But yes, that day is coming! We just have to get through the next few months! As Covid spreads into more communities and sadly, takes more lives, more and more people will realize the importance of making and wearing masks to keep each other safe. The army of mask-makers who stepped up in the Spring, are still out there, still making masks for teachers, students, family and neighbors. And just as we put LOVE in our quilts, these masks we sew also come from a place of Love.

Hang on. We are going to get through this together!

Magic of Childhood

If you’ve watched enough Christmas movies in your lifetime, you know that the Magic of Santa Claus is a lot like the Magic of Creativity. If you believe hard enough, it will come! But it is really more about the Magic of Childhood…when we occupy this place where we are (hopefully) allowed to dream that anything is possible. The Creativity of the Artist flows from this magical place – and it is REAL Magic! Unfortunately after a number of years we are no longer encouraged to be in this magical space, and so often the Artist, and Santa Claus die within us.

But then again, many of us discover that Santa Claus, like Creativity, lives within us…and has *always* been there waiting silently until we were ready to believe again. We learn that the true delight of the season is to embody the magic of Santa, and the true joy of the holidays is to share and give the very thing that we are craving. Love.

So we make our beautiful quilts that are stitched through and through with Love. Not everyone who receives a quilt will comprehend the depth and profound abundance of love that is contained in those hundreds or thousands of stitches, but that’s ok, because that quilt will still glow with love when it is taken out of a trunk 100 years from now. We make our quilts and we craft and sew special gifts because it opens and heals our own hearts when we put all that love into a gift. And it goes on shining with love, like the Velveteen Rabbit, into a future that we may or may not see.

I think it is safe to say that during this difficult year, we have all contemplated our own mortality, or at least the nature of being Human in troubled times. Nothing lasts forever, but some things last longer than others. The images, the words, the Love we put into a quilt today…may well be handed down to several generations, and comfort a descendant in troubled times. We seek the security of family, and if we don’t have our own family, we go out and make new families among our tribe of creative friends. That is part of the reason we come together at quilt festivals, and that is why we admire transcendent works of textile art that are sure to be treasured for decades or even centuries. The antique quilts we admire in museums, often started out as a gift between friends or family.

As you finish up your gifts for the 2020 holidays, there are many strong emotions that will go into those hundreds or thousands of stitches made during this challenging year, but the most important thing that will stay with those stitches is that little piece of heart and soul that we put into everything we make. And yes, it’s Magic.

Small Business Saturday

Sewing in the time of COVID-19 – Week 37

We are an industry of small businesses, mom-and-pop independent retailers, and multi-generation suppliers. Over the past several weeks our industry has lost a few more of the elders and founders of the industry…the latest being Peter Kantor of Northcott. I met Peter when I visited the Northcott headquarters in Toronto, on a trip where we were a sponsor (and I was a speaker) at Quilt Canada. His loss this week is a reminder that those who came in on the ground floor of our industry…are getting older. Well gosh, we are all getting older!….but we now see 3rd and even 4th generation family members stepping in at many companies, and it is a reminder that we are in a very special industry. We send our condolences out to Northcott, and Peter’s family, and all of you who have lost loved ones during this challenging year.

As you probably know, Paul and I started eQuilter in the basement of our house in January 1999. In March 1999 I went to my very first Quilt Market, in Providence Rhode Island. My very first booth that I visited (and first order that I wrote) was with Northcott, and we continue to have a very close relationship with the company after all these years.

I left the garment industry and my 7th Avenue corporate job in the late 80s, searching for a different way to make a living as a creative person, that wouldn’t kill my soul and suck the life out of me. After a few years running my bookstore and jewelry store in the East Village (next to Life Cafe, during the “Rent” years) I moved to Colorado in 1990 to be near family. A few years later I met Paul, and a few years later we started eQuilter. When I found the quilting industry, I knew I had found my home. We feel so fortunate to be a part of this family-oriented industry that has sustained us and our employees through this challenging year. We hope that in some small way, we have helped to support you also.

We have joined with the Colorado Quilt Council (CQC) and the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum (RMQM) in an effort to collect and distribute quilts to the 300 families who lost their homes in our terrible wildfires last month. We have donation bins at the front door to drop off donated quilts. Please call us or email if you have questions.

Re our ‘Curbside’ Retail Pickup –
Only available if you bring a *working* cell phone to call us when you arrive, then we will place your package just outside the front door. Thank you for respecting our efforts to keep everyone here safe, i.e. no face-to-face contact at the door for drop-off or pickup.

with Hope for the Future,

Ode to Bob

If we are lucky, as we travel the path of Life, we intersect with special people who are meant to mentor and inspire us. When I was in 7th grade, 12 years old, I had an art teacher who I am sure changed the course of my life. She recognized my talent, plucked me from shy obscurity in the back of the class, and told me that I was an artist. We cannot possibly overestimate the power of a mentor choosing to support a talented young person.

I had always been an artist of course. I was the one drawing on the back of my math homework, drawing in the borders of my cursive writing pad, overjoyed on the rare days we went to the art room in elementary school. But…I did not think of myself as an artist until she told me so.

Later that year I got a copy of “The Agony and the Ecstasy” – the fictionalized biography of Michelangelo – and I read it until the cover fell off and the pages fell out. Then I did the same thing to a copy of “Lust for Life”. (About Van Gogh) That year, at Christmas, I got a set of oil paints. I was in Heaven! (see photo above)

Years later, I encountered Bob Ross on PBS. He assured me, in warm honey tones, that I too could be a painter. You see, I had forgotten that I was an artist, and that I loved to paint. I watched Bob every day for a year, until I finally went out and got another set of oil paints. I found a weekly group that painted from a live model. There I met other artists, and we went out plein air painting in the mountains, in the Iris gardens of Boulder, and in farmlands of Colorado. I took master classes with a classical oil portrait painter, and with another impressionist painter who taught me to see color.

(See the new Bob Ross licensed collection here.)

Even though I never met Bob Ross in person, I felt like I knew him. He was such a gentle soul, and he reminded me of what it was to feel the joy of making a piece of art. Fortunately I was able to thank my 7th grade art teacher for being my mentor, as I went off to college at 17. She said…all I ask is that you do the same for someone else someday. And so I have, when I teach, lecture, sponsor, curate, jury or purchase…I am carrying on the joy of mentorship that was gifted to me so many years ago.

I’d like to express my gratitude to the International Quilt Museum, and the artists who contributed their work, for the exhibit I curated – “For the Love of Gaia” – which closes today. It has been an honor to work with all of you, and our exhibit’s next venue is being planned now.

Our creative work is a healing balm for the soul in these challenging times, but even now as we see light at the end of the tunnel, it is so important that we continue to support and inspire one another. We are so lucky to have the quilting community to nurture our creative souls throughout 2020, and I can’t wait to see you all again. We do hope that our fabrics have brought some color and joy to you over the last 8 months while we collectively made a stand (and millions of facemasks!) against Covid.

with hope for the future…
