Ripe Tomatoes & Shakespeare

Every year August seems to come faster, and suddenly we are talking about Back To School tasks and ripening tomatoes. However August also brings the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK, which is the biggest annual quilting event in Europe. The quilts on exhibit are so different from what we see here in the US, which is why I am always delighted when it works out that I can go to photograph the show!

eQuilter is the sponsor for the Festival Theater, which is where fashion show and lectures are held. For those of you who would like to connect at the show, please look for me if you are going to the Thursday night dinner (with Stuart Hillard from the Great British Sewing Bee!), the Friday fashion show or SAQA dinner, or the Saturday night Shakespeare outing. (I am the host on a bus to Stratford.) Other than that, I’ll be lurking around the show with my camera, and attending several lectures in the Festival Theater. Please say hello!!!

In addition to quilting, our family has other artistic interests. In addition to classical/jazz/opera music, we are all artists or photographers, Photoshop nerds, and Shakespeare buffs. As a matter of fact Sophie is currently in a teen Shakespeare camp at CU, which runs concurrent with the Boulder CU Shakespeare Festival. Last night was the final night of the music festival up at Chautauqua, and in a few weeks we will have the NEXT exhibit and SAQA conference at our Dairy Arts Center. We feel so fortunate to live in a place with so much creativity and support for the arts!

If you live in the Boulder/Front Range area, please consider attending the opening reception for the NEXT exhibit at the Dairy, Friday Aug 25 from 5-7 pm…or the Artists Gallery Talk on Sun Aug 27, 1-3 pm. If you are a local SAQA member you are probably already signed up for the conference!

We are delighted to be a sponsor for this very special local event, and I hope to see many of you in Birmingham or Boulder in the next few weeks!

Free Quilt Pattern – Holiday Grandeur

What is it about a sparkling snow-covered Christmas Tree that is so magical? Is it the quiet beauty of a winter morning after a storm, or the clean classic beauty of the Blue and White color combination?

This week’s Free Quilt Pattern is a delightful combination of the Winter’s Grandeur and Holiday Flourish collections, with icy pine needles, shimmering blue ornaments, and crystalline combination of Sapphire Blues and Silver Metallic.

Start with a large central panel featuring the decorated Christmas tree, then add layers of jewel-like coordinates to make the pieced border with diamond blocks. This 58″ x 66″ quilt will hang in a place of honor during your holiday celebrations, or will make a treasured gift to be cherished over the Winter season.

… from the ‘Winter’s Grandeur’ collection and Peggy Toole’s Holiday Flourish group
by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

Order the pattern as configured, or customize it to your liking with any of our thousands of fabrics. Just place your desired fabrics in your Wish List, and these fabrics will appear in the Fabric Selector below the pattern.

Creative Nudge – Weekend in the Redwoods

Happy August!

Last night I got home from my quick trip to San Jose in California. Many thanks to all of you who showed up for my lecture – it was great to see you! We all enjoyed the premier of the Quilt Nihon exhibit, and if you live in the area, I urge you to go see this beautiful collection of Japanese quilts at the Museum of Quilts & Textiles.

I took an extra day to visit the Redwoods, and it brought back many memories of my younger childhood in California. Wandering among the groves of silent giants is awe-inspiring and always seems to put the rest of one’s life into perspective.

For those of you who might want to take a similar trip, I’ll share my travel notes:

Based on suggestions from friends in the area, I drove up Bear Creek Road (a winding forest road in the mountains) to Big Basin Redwood State Park, which apparently has a reputation for Sasquatch (Big Foot) sightings. (!) There were lots of families there for camping and hiking. Tiny rustic cabins nestled like dollhouses at the feet of the monumental groves of Sequoia Sempervirens – the California Coastal Redwoods.

Each of these areas have long and short hikes, including an easy loop that can be done in under an hour for those on a tight schedule. I paid a $10 parking/use fee, which is good for any other state park for the rest of the day.

Next I went to Henry Cowell State Park, where the park ranger saw my parking sticker and waved me through. Yay! As I walked the .8 mile loop, I heard a train whistling, and finally deduced that it might be the train depicted in one of our most popular Nature Panels. As I walked further, I saw the wooden trestle bridges depicted in the panel. So those of you who snapped up this collectible panel knew that already, I assume!

My 3rd Redwood Park for the day was Nisene Marks, but after seeing warning signs about Ticks posted at the entrance, I decided to go have an early dinner on Capitola Beach with a view of Monterey Bay. I soaked up that California vibe, recharging my batteries with a little sunshine and sea air.

Hoping to see many of you at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham… I’ll be hosting a bus to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford on Saturday August 12!

Hello from San Jose

Tonight I am writing to you from San Jose, California. I lived here when I was 4 years old! Tomorrow I will be giving my power point lecture on “International Quilt Trends” at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles. There are still a few tickets left, and you can purchase them on their website.

The last time I was here was to support Yvonne Porcella’s retrospective. Yvonne finally lost her long battle with ovarian cancer, but she is definitely still here in spirit! She was at Sacred Threads too, with the tribute quilts that were made for her. I took a portrait photo of Yvonne which she in turn gave to many of her friends, and now I am seeing that photo made into quilt portraits of Yvonne, which is just so wonderful. It makes me remember her smile and her open heart, on that day I took her photo.

Also you will find several photos of Sacred Thread artists on my personal Facebook page…if you’d like to see some of the beautiful ladies who were at the artists’ reception.

Today I’ve posted photos from Sacred Threads on my photo page. Tomorrow after my lecture, I’ll be at the opening of the Quilt Nihon exhibit (we are also a sponsor of this event, featuring quilts from Japan) and of course I will share photos with you.

We have another big quilt event approaching that always redefines my ideas about quilting trends: the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK. This is the biggest annual quilt event in Europe, and I am always so excited to go see what all the European quilters are up to! I’ve been watching the Modern Quilt movement slowly building momentum there, so it is so interesting to see how all the trends, world events, and design influences come out in these big exhibits. That is in a couple weeks, and yes I will be there with my camera.

Creative Nudge – Blue Horse Medicine

This week I want to feature another one of my favorite quilts from the quilt festival in Canada last month. In the center of this collage is a photo of “Blue Horse Medicine” by Vanecea Greene who is from Calgary.

This was a very large quilt made of hundreds (thousands?) of tiny postage stamp-sized squares, creating the impression of a giant mosaic. It was absolutely stunning … a real show-stopper in the exhibit.

Vanecea created this as a tribute to the First Nation (Native American) artist Dale Auger, who was born a Sakaw Cree from the Bigstone Cree Nation in northern Alberta, Canada. It is an interpretation of his painting “Blue Horse Medicine” and Vanecea was careful to note on her artist statement that she has letters giving permission to use his image of his painting.

This is very important to note that any time a quilter uses another artist’s or photographer’s work as a source image, credit must be given and permission must be obtained.

You can see photos of this quilt, and other quilts from the quilt festival in Toronto, in the Canada photo album on my photo pages.

If you live in the Bay Area (California) I do hope you can come to my power point lecture “International Quilt Trends” at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles this Sunday at 2 pm. Right now I am busy adding photos of Sacred Threads quilts to the 200+ plus images!

Tickets are available online now. I will stay for the opening reception of Quilt Nihon, following the lecture…so please stay for the party! (We are sponsoring this exhibit of Japanese quilts.)

I also hope to see many of our eQuilter friends at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham… I’ll be hosting a bus to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford on Saturday August 12.

Free Pattern – Hummingbirds in Style

This week’s Free Quilt Pattern celebrates the delicate beauty and brilliant plumage of the Hummingbird, set in Floral vignettes with the delicate style of Botanic Illustrations.

Nineteenth Century Naturalists were fascinated with the beauty and the science of the Aviary world, and sought to preserve their observations with exquisitely detailed drawings and paintings.

It is obvious that this collection is inspired by those Naturalists, and this 63″ x 63″ quilt is an homage to those early explorers who chased these tiny jewel-like birds, hoping for a glimpse of
their shimmering feathers among the blossoms full of nectar.

Bark Cloth Makes a Comeback

This week we restocked our Bark Cloth department, which has been empty for many years, but now our suppliers are offering this vintage textured cloth again and I am thrilled! The origins of this type of fabric are actually from the bark of trees, but now it has a pebble-like texture that mimics the texture of bark.

Bark Cloth was very popular in the Fifties and Sixties, with motifs ranging from The Atomic Age to Tropical Florals and Foliage. TV shows like Mad Men helped to rekindle the popularity of these fabrics, and now another generation is rediscovering Bark Cloth for Home Dec and Fashion Sewing.

Today I picked my first tomato from my garden, which is always a celebration! I plant more basil every year but it is never enough. Sunday I am going to the screening of the Bollywood classic ‘Devdas’ ….lots of fantastic singing and dancing…costumes, colors and FABRIC! If it is playing on the big screen in your area, I urge you to go!

Photos of Sacred Threads quilts will be included in my power point presentation “International Quilt Trends” at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles on July 30. Hope to see you there!
