Creative Nudge – Mastery, Momentum, and Modernity

momentum

This week I want to continue the conversation about what I saw at the Dairy Barn last week. The “Mastery: Sustaining Momentum” is a powerful exhibit curated by Nancy Crow, which takes a bold stand somewhere between Contemporary Quilting and Modern Quilting.

* The group of 3 quilts at the top of this image are by Colleen Kole, from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

* The bottom left corner features the hand-dyes of its maker: Heidi Stoll-Weber, who lives in Frankfurt Germany.

* The bottom right corner quilt, with bold swooping shapes in solid colors, is by Marina Kamenskaya, from Wauconda, Illinois.

Bear in mind these are very LARGE quilts, and they were made in sets of 3 for this show!

I believe that this exhibit demonstrates a sea-change, a metamorphosis that is occurring in the quilting world. The spare, clean, modern design aesthetic espoused by the Modern Quilters, is now influencing contemporary quilting and creating a fascinating mutation.

Modern quilters have been inspired by Nancy Crow, and now she has gathered a group of fellow quilters who seem to be inspired by *both* Nancy and Modern Quilting…consciously or unconsciously?…and here is the result.

I urge you to see this show before it closes November 27. If you can’t make it to the show, pick up a book and try to imagine the huge gallery full of groups of 3 by each artist. It makes a huge statement about where we’ve been, and where we are going. I can see a museum or corporate collector snapping up these groups of 3, so this powerful visual statement can be enjoyed by the general public.

I’ve been posting more photos from the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK… Enjoy!

Free Pattern – Ambrosia

ambrosia

This week’s Free Quilt Pattern will help you to get over any fear of cutting up gorgeous large-scale florals… just look at these beautiful results!

The central theme is a large-scale painterly flower print, with juicy watercolor blossoms on a layered etheric background. Slice up that garden view and alternate it with a White-on-White Butterfly print, and you’ll be looking through an abstract white picket fence at the luscious private garden beyond.

Use the coordinates for sashing and border as shown, or use our exclusive eQuilter Color Picker to choose your favorite hues from the multicolor floral, and personalize with your favorite colors.

This 47″ x 67″ quilt is Light and Bright, and will bring illumination and cheer to any room where it is displayed.

Dairy Barn – Nancy Crow & Mastery

We know that some of our quilter friends on the East Coast are without power, but we are thinking of you and hoping you have come through the storm ok. If any Quilt Guilds are putting together relief efforts for comfort quilts, let me know and I will pass it on to our followers.

Mission of Love is preparing to send an airlift to Guatemala today, and then they will be immediately starting on another Hurricane relief project for Haiti. If you are interested in helping, watch for more announcements in our newsletters.

Last night I returned from Ohio, where I was speaking at the Dairy Barn, and even more importantly, I was able to see the “Mastery: Sustaining Momentum” exhibit which is there until November 27.

If you are in driving distance to Athens Ohio, I strongly urge you to go see this fantastic exhibit in person! I hand-carried copies of the show catalog back with me, which you can purchase from eQuilter this week, but if you are a Nancy Crow fan you must plan a trip to see this in person!

As I have written about before, I like to watch the space in the middle between supposedly polarized quilt movements, because the most interesting things bubble up in that no-man’s-land in between supposedly opposite quilt movements.

It happened when there was a polarization between traditional quilts and art quilts, and it is happening now in the fertile mid-ground between contemporary quilts and modern quilts. If you go to see the Mastery exhibit, you will see what I mean. An added plus is that you can also see on either end of the gallery, smaller pieces that show the artists’ process of developing the ideas for these huge quilts. (Samples, paintings, paper auditioning of colors and shapes.) It is a fascinating glimpse of the artists’ process.

This show was curated by Nancy Crow, and there are 12 artists (including Nancy) who contributed 3 large quilts each. When you walk in the room, it is a visceral experience. Modern quilters especially should go to see this exhibit.

Built in 1914, the Dairy Barn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features a 6500 square-foot gallery. While I was there, 2 exciting things were happening behind the scenes. Workmen were out back pulling up the original bricks, which have been there for 100 years. This is where the expansion of the Dairy Barn will happen, and I have to give credit and kudos to the executive director Jane Forrest Redfern, for raising a mind-boggling amount of money for this capital improvement. The bricks will be saved and laid down again when the expansion is finished, by the way.

The other quiet event going on behind the scenes was that the boxes containing Quilt National 2017 entries had just started arriving, and those boxes were being opened and the contents catalogued in the back room. After all of the quilts are seen in person, the list of names will be confirmed and announced.

As you may know, to be accepted to the biennial Quilt National at the Dairy Barn is one of the most prestigious shows for a quilt artist. Collectors travel from far away to see and buy at Quilt National. It is not unusual for a professional fiber artist to tell me it is their #1 goal to get into this show. Many of you may have catalogs from past shows, that you have bought from us over the last several years.

So if you are curious, you can buy the Mastery book, or you can plan to see the Mastery show in the next 6 weeks, and/or plan to see Quilt National next year! We are a sponsor for Quilt National so I will write about it again next year.

Creative Nudge – Mother Earth – Our Home

mother_earth

As I review the photos of quilt festivals I’ve attended over the last year, in preparation for my lecture at the Dairy Barn on Thursday, I’ve been picking out some more of my favorite quilts to share with you. This one was photographed at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham UK, in August.

This is a section of a large and very detailed quilt by Katalin Horvath, titled “Mother Earth is Our Home.” It depicts different continents and environments around the globe, with the flora and fauna….and indigenous people who live in each environment. The rainbow colors are obviously symbolic, and this is a quilt you can enjoy from a distance, or up close. It also struck me as a very spiritual quilt, with a lot of heart and soul in every stitch. Katalin set out to share a vision and a message, and it is delivered in a powerful way in this piece.

The eye goes to the animals in the quilt, which are rendered in a very graphic way, but with lots of delicate stitching details. You can stand and look at this quilt for a long time because it tells so many stories, and each visual story is so fascinating. I am posting photos of the quilt and the details on my photo page so you can appreciate all the thought that went into this piece. She uses the artwork of the indigenous people to tell each story – using Celtic knots, Pacific Northwest Native art, Aboriginal dots, etc.

With the announcement that honeybees are being put on the Endangered Species List for the first time in the US, it seems like it is a time to stop and contemplate what is happening here on our Mother Earth, and how it is affecting the creatures who travel through space and time with us on this beautiful planet. We know our eQuilter customers love wildlife and Nature-themed fabrics, so we pounce on any new fabrics that depict the infinite beauty of Mother Nature.

From the oceans, to the Arctic, to the Northwoods, and the plains of Africa…fish, birds, bees and bears…we love all of these too. We are aggressively restocking all the BEE fabrics we can get our hands on now, for all of you who want to include Honeybees in upcoming projects!

I’ve added a collage of wildlife fabrics on the top and bottom of the quilt photo. Remember if you want to direct your 2% to an environmental charity during checkout, you can choose Rainforest Action Network or Ocean Conservancy.

If you live in Ohio and want to see more quilt photos, come to the Dairy Barn Thursday at noon, for my power point lecture “International Quilt Trends”!

Details and Tickets are available here.

Happy October!

It has been a week since I flew home from Cuba, and I’ve made a big batch of Cuban Black Beans to get me through my backlog of emails. (If you’ve had authentic Cuban Black Beans, you know what I mean!)

Here in Boulder the leaves are turning, my tomatoes are turning red, and I am watching the weather report for freeze warnings, so I can harvest my prodigious forest of Basil at the last possible moment.

A few days ago I was in a coffee shop and I overheard someone saying that Christmas is less than 3 months away. I can’t think about the holidays yet, but I am looking forward to cooler weather for sure. I am working on a couple art quilts, and looking forward to seeing a couple of my quilts on display in Houston this year.

Tonight Sophie and I are going to a fundraiser dinner at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado. My quilt “Arches National Park – Bobcat” was based on a photo of one of their animals, and the quilt will ultimately be auctioned to raise money for the Sanctuary. I am presenting a copy of Donna Desoto’s catalog book “Inspired by the National Parks: Landscapes & Wildlife in Fabric Perspectives” to the sanctuary director Pat Craig. The book is now being featured at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, and the National Parks quilt exhibit is touring the country as part of the US Centennial Celebration of our National Parks. We are temporarily sold out of the book but it will be back in stock shortly so let us know if you want us to hold a copy for you.

I hope to see many of you next Thursday Oct 6 while I am visiting the Dairy Barn in Athens Ohio. Please join us for lunch and my power point lecture “International Quilt Trends”, and then a gallery tour of “Mastery: Sustaining Momentum” by Jane Forrest Redfern, the Executive Director. This is a *fundraiser* event for the arts center, which will host Quilt National again in 2017.

Details and Tickets are available here.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is a cause that is close to our hearts. My mom is a survivor, so was Paul’s mom, and it has affected so many loved ones over the years…I am sure you have a similar story. In addition to our Breast Cancer fundraiser fabrics, remember you can choose the National Breast Cancer Foundation as your charity of choice when you check out here at eQuilter. We have raised over 285K for breast cancer research, out of the almost 1.4 million that the eQuilter charity program has raised in total. We have some friends in the industry who are fighting this disease now …. sending hugs to you now…. you know who you are. XOXO.

Creative Nudge – Caribbean Sunset

nudge

More than ever, I am inspired by the Colors of Cuba. As I spent the week as tour host and mother hen to our group, I also had my camera in hand to capture the combinations of colors that are so unique to this island nation.

This is my postcard from Varadero – a beach area that has been a favorite of South Americans and Europeans for decades. It is the closest Cuban land to the US, so I imagine a lot of dreams were launched from this coast. We were there for a short visit, and I had about an hour to walk on the beach at sunset, where I captured the Golden Hour’s liquid light shining on the wet sand, and the turquoise waters under a deep purple sky.

I’ve put together a collage of tropical island and beach-themed fabrics to go with this beach photo… and you may have noticed we actually have a digital printed beach scene panel that could be used for a quilt like this collage.

I love being the designated wildlife spotter, my eyes fine-tuned by years of spotting Colorado wildlife (usually at night when driving!), and in the last few years sharpened by my Polar Bear expeditions.

On the last day as we drove along the Cuban coast, I spotted a pod of dolphins just off the water’s edge. On my last visit to Cuba a dolphin had jumped out of the water right behind me, as I had lunch by the water! So this time I was determined to spot some dolphins …and sure enough, my wish was granted! Years of spotting turtles, whales and porpoises, has taught me what to look for in the ocean waters. When you are a visual person, wildlife spotting is just an extension of one’s natural abilities, in my experience!

I hope to see many of you while I am visiting the Dairy Barn in Athens Ohio on Oct 6. Please join us for lunch and my power point lecture “International Quilt Trends”, and then a gallery tour of “Mastery: Sustaining Momentum” by Jane Forrest Redfern, the Executive Director. Free Pattern – Oceanic Sanctuary

This dreamy ocean-themed Free Quilt Pattern has a mystical quality, as if you are viewing the whales, octopus, dolphins, orcas, turtles and jellyfish from underwater.

The watercolor textures of the marine life illustrations give this a feeling of contemporary art, with calming colors that evoke a magical secret world under the waves.

Make this 43″ x 47″ quilt as a wallhanging for your favorite marine biologist, or maybe a baby quilt for a future Thalassophile. (Lover of the Sea)
