Creative Nudge – Native Inspiration

native

I am still thinking about my visit 2 weeks ago, to the Navajo Pueblo on the reservation outside of Albuquerque, where I saw a huge festival and ceremonial dance.

Tonight I want to share with you two gorgeous Native American portrait quilts from the Houston Quilt Festival.

On the left is “Dancing at the Pow-Wow” by Marty Boles. This piece was inspired by a photo taken at the Great Mohican Pow-Wow in Loudenville, Ohio.

On the right is “Jefe Indio” (Indian Chief) by Adriana Briones Calleja of Spain. Her goal was to show the greatness, strength and magnificence of the Native American culture.

Both pieces have such incredible detail, but also a very powerful presence because of the adept use of color and value.

I have included a collage of 4 of our in-stock fabrics, inspired by Native geometrics and artwork.

We are working on 5 (!) videos from the Houston Quilt Festival, so watch for those in the very near future!

In case you missed it – our first video from Houston is an interview with artist Hollis Chatelain.

Free Pattern – Dakota Wilderness

dakota

In this week’s Free Quilt Pattern, a lone wolf peers from the ethereal mists of the northern Dakota landscape, in this finely detailed Digital printed panel.

A tribal geometric pattern decorates the bottom border of this wildlife/landscape panel, and the geometric theme is echoed in the pieced border, made with Hoffman earth-toned hand-dyes.

We are reminded of the faithful wolf from the movie “Dances With Wolves”, in this evocative 40″ x 55″ wall-hanging pattern.

‘Dakota’ is an exceptional Digital Print by Red Rooster Studio for Red Rooster Fabrics.

Order the pattern as configured, or customize it to your liking with any of our thousands of fabrics. Just place your desired fabrics in your Wish List, and these fabrics will appear in the Fabric Selector below the pattern.

Black Beans for Cuba

We hope that you have had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday with your loved ones. Did you notice we did not bombard you with Black Friday emails? *smile* You’re welcome!

Having traveled to Cuba 3 times in the last year and a half, I know the passing of Fidel Castro is a huge turning point for this island nation, and for relations with the US. I’ve had inquiries about whether I will lead another tour there…but I am waiting to see how things unfold in the next few months.

To mark this event, I thought I’d share my kids’ favorite recipe that I brought back from my visits to Cuba. There are many versions, but this is my own. Instead of sending you Black Friday, I am sending you Black Beans. Enjoy!

Luana’s Working Mom Crock Pot Cuban Black Beans:

1 cup Dried Black Beans – soaked overnight – rinse after 8 hours
4-5 cups filtered water to fill small crock pot
Soak in water overnight, rinse and replace water after 8 hours.
(So your beans will be less musical.)
1 red bell pepper, seeded, chopped into 1/2″ chunks
2 tsp dried garlic flakes, 2 tsp dried onion flakes
(If you have extra time, saute fresh garlic and onion in olive oil before adding to crock pot.)
1 tsp dried oregano or herbs de provence
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1-2 Tb apple cider vinegar
1 Tb Brown Sugar
1 Bay Leaf
1 Tb Vegetable Bouillon Paste (you can substitute bouillon cubes or broth)
2 Tb extra virgin olive oil – stir in just before serving.

Put all ingredients in Crock Pot and simmer on low (all day or all night) for 8 hours or more. If broth is too thin, cook uncovered on high until it thickens.

Mash beans partially, with a potato masher before serving, and cook to thicken. I do this about an hour before it finishes cooking.

Discard Bay Leaf and serve with rice and sweet potatoes. Plantain chips are great with this dish also, if you can get them! Enjoy!

Please drop off your donated quilts for Nepal by Dec 9, as our EWB contact will pick them up Dec 10. Thanks!

Creative Nudge – Bear Hugs for Thanksgiving

bear-hugs

Tonight I am catching up on my photos from last week’s Polar Bear Tour, and it was almost impossible to choose a photo to share with you in this newsletter!

We had a few very special encounters with bears, and one of them was this pair of inseparable bear best friends. (BBF) These two large adult bears played together, slept side by side, wrestled and hung out together, as they waited for the ice to freeze, so they could feed. At times they were very tender with each other, and at other times they were sparring and generally fooling around like brothers. Who knows, maybe they were brothers?

Our guide explained that every bear had its own personality, its own habits, and its own unique behaviors based on its background. The bears are very curious, and are not afraid of humans, so they would wander over to our Polar Rover and hang out near us for an hour or more.

We went the last week of the season, just before everything ices up and the town of Churchill closes up for the season. Even though we were the last group of the season, the ice had not frozen and the bears were wandering around town, *really* hungry. The locals all were talking about how the ice had not come, so the bears could not eat. (They go out onto the ice and eat seals.) One hungry male bear killed and ate a cub.

This summer the Canadian Ice Service reported Arctic Ice melting 2-4 weeks earlier than usual, and now it is freezing later than usual, so that means the bears have even less time to hunt and feed on the ice. When there is no ice, they don’t eat. That is a long time to wait for their favorite meal!

Most bears spend their time waiting for the ice, curled up in the snow and sleeping, trying not to waste calories. They look like big dogs. We saw a couple bears pouncing on snow drifts but it turned out they were breaking through the snow to find thick piles of seaweed, so they could make a nest in the dark brown kelp beds. Their fur is a light yellow, but the kelp nests turned their fur a reddish cast, so we could tell the handful of bears who loved to dream in the seaweed.

We’ve made sure to stock fabrics related to the Arctic – including polar bears, snowy owls, Northern Lights, and Inuit people. You can see some of these fabrics in a collage around my “Bear Hug” photo.

All of us at eQuilter wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, with your friends and family. We know you will be giving and receiving lots of Bear Hugs on Thursday!

eQuilter will be closed on Thursday, but we’ll be back in the office on Friday morning.

Free Pattern – Seaside Dreams

seaside-dreams

Oceanside vacations are some of the most soothing and calming holidays, and
this week’s Free Quilt Pattern is a seaside sabbatical that will bring a sense of “Ahhhh” into any room.

This 66″ x 82″ quilt makes a Twin Comforter, or a beautiful wallhanging for a room where you go to relax and renew. Detailed seashells, starfish, seahorses and fish are the lovely motifs, focused around an underwater scene in a central panel.

Spa-like hues with cream and earthtone accents make this a color scheme that will fit almost anywhere. Sashing is cut from a Hoffman Hand-Dye in a deeper shade of Aqua-Blue, making this an underwater symphony of marine life and coastal colors.

Polar Bears, Hollis, and Nepal

This week I am writing to you from Churchill – the Polar Bear capitol of the world. It is the site of the largest gathering of polar bears on the planet – a seasonal event where the bears migrate to this one place where the ice first starts to form so they can go out to feed.

We are just wrapping up 3 days of wildlife viewing, with my group of travelers. This is my 3rd time up here, and it just gets better every time which is hard to believe. It is impossible to leave here and not feel grave concern for the bears’ plight. I’ll be posting photos of the bears next week.

Our first video interview from Houston is online now – with artist and teacher Hollis Chatelain – talking about the messages in her stunning artwork. You may recall that she had a piece in the recent Water is Life exhibits, in Geneva and Rome.

Our local CU Boulder chapter of Engineers Without Borders is going back to Nepal, and they have room for about 7 more quilts in their backpacks. They will hand carry these quilts to earthquake victims in mountaintop villages of Nepal.

Please drop off your donated quilts for Nepal by Dec 9, as our EWB contact will pick them up Dec 10. Thanks!

Creative Nudge – Southwest Colors

southwest

Tonight I am writing to you from Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Tomorrow our group flies up to Churchill to see the polar bears. However I wanted to share with you the inspirations of New Mexico, from my visit to Albuquerque for the Color Marketing Group conference.

If you’ve been to New Mexico, you know that you are steeped in color as soon as you arrive. The rich history of the area, saturated with the colors of the Native American and Mexican influences, surrounds and entices you…along with the sounds and smells of the local culture.

Because of our history of helping indigenous people through our charity program, I had an amazing unique experience during my free afternoon. I was invited onto the reservation for a Dance Festival and Feast Day. As you drive onto the tribal lands, signs are posted saying that you cannot take photos or videos, and you cannot even sketch. Your phone or camera can be confiscated, and you can be fined for breaking tribal law. So I carefully stashed my camera in the trunk of my rental car. So I will have to describe what I saw, and make a painting with words.

It took about a half hour to creep in traffic, along the road into the Pueblo (village), and my friends let me park in front of one of the elders’ houses. We walked about a mile into the center of the Pueblo, to the central plaza which was not paved. There I saw about 600 dancers, young and old alike, in their ceremonial best clothing, in a giant circular double circle that stretched over 3 blocks. The women and girls’ robes were heavily embroidered, with hand-loomed tapestry belts and trims. Their long dark hair hung down straight (no braids) with an ornate headdress, with symbols expressing their family roots. The men and boys had bells and garlands of shells on their ankles and across their torsos, so as they danced, it made a loud jangling sound. The women’s skirts were black with red, turquoise, and cream embroidery. As they danced to the drumbeat, the dust from the unpaved plaza filled the air. The crowd watched silently, with respect.

100 more men stood in a square formation, chanting and singing, and some playing drums to keep the beat. We sat looking into the middle of the long plaza, and the circular dance lines stretched as far as we could see to the left and right. About 2000 people had set up lawn chairs all around the plaza, who had come from pueblos far and wide, to watch. There were mothers in the dance line with their very small children. There were fathers and brothers, sisters and grandmothers. I only saw only 2 other white faces in the crowd of spectators. I felt very privileged to be invited to witness this dance ceremony. Many said they had never seen so many dancers show up from the surrounding pueblos, and that it was because they were dancing and praying for the world, which is in such chaos.

After watching for a couple hours, we walked back up the hill and across the land, to the elders’ house. I met a 94 year old grandpa named Geronimo. We were invited to go in to eat, because it was feast day. We declined, but asked to talk to the grandmas. I had brought cash to give to the grandmas. I asked to speak to someone who could help determine who could get the cash to those most in need. They brought forth a woman who works with children who are struggling in school, who live in the deepest poverty, often with grandparents because they lost their parents. The grandma started to cry, and said that my arrival, and my offering to their community, was like an answer to a prayer. She said “Today Spirit heard our prayers.” I told her the money for the children was from my business, and from all the people who support our business, because we all care about those children. I promised her that I would come back…for the children.

So thank you for supporting our business, so I can share these experiences with you, but also so together we can help these communities who have so little.

My photo collage above is not from the reservation, but it is a collage of some of the colors, arts and crafts that I saw while in New Mexico.
